Pre-departure clearances through ForeFlight.

As an IFR trainee, it is encouraging to hear that the system is working that well. Thanks Paul. -
Panel lights rheostat M20C 1965 / Updated 9/2018
0TreeLemur replied to Drumstick's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
That one on Spruce https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/singlechannelpwm.php that looks like the one on Amazon is not certified. The certified one definitely has a price that would repel a CB. The certified one on spruce here: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/maxDimUnit.php -

Physics Question in Making a Fuel Stick
0TreeLemur replied to M20F-1968's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
The fuel stick in the photo by @Hank looks like acrylic to me. I'd try 1/8" ID acrylic. BTW- @M20F-1968 I really like the paint job on your aircraft. -
Physics Question in Making a Fuel Stick

Hi John- I've searched for data on wetting contact angle data for gasoline- haven't been able to find it. I'd suggest go with the 1/8" ID of either. That should help. -
Physics Question in Making a Fuel Stick
0TreeLemur replied to M20F-1968's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Wetting contact angle plays an important role in this behavior. It might be that the plastic tubing you bought has a wetting contact angle near or greater than 90 degrees, which will negate the surface tension effect, and allow air to freely enter the tube, which lets the fuel run out. It will be a property of the tubing and the liquid. If the wetting contact angle is >90, then the liquid is considered a "non-wetting" liquid for that solid. No molecular affinity. That probably explains your problem. The plastic has a greater affinity for contact with air than for gasoline at an interface between the three. I'm a fluids nerd. -
Since we bought our M20C 11 months ago for less than the cost of a new Toyota Tacoma, my co-pilot and I have done a ton of work under the watchful supervision of a really cool A&P. We bought her in flying condition, but with a 1967 panel and 1985 radio stack. Now she's got a contemporary engine monitor, new panel layout, and WAAS GPS with ADS-B transponder. It has been really fun work doing these upgrades, and the down time has been a month here and there. We still have managed to fly over 100 h this year. Considering the advice of others, I think you would do well to buy a very affordable C model, use the money saved by not buying an F to modernize rather than repair. It's been great for us. Best of luck with your decision.

After pondering this photo a bit, I think there were probably some CBs (not cheap ba$tar&s) over the horizon that were blocking some of the suns' rays.

B11 B805 Accu TrakII on Ebay
0TreeLemur replied to MooneyPTG's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Hey @211º I had the B11+B811 install done in combination with a GPS430W/ADS-B upgrade at a small airport in Mississippi. If you want the name and phone number let me know and I'll PM you. -

Here's what I tried today: BRASSO metal polish. The oxidized brass connector was quite dark. Brasso worked great! Very gentle too- I was afraid that the steel wool might score the surface too much. The metal polish contains micro-abrasives that worked with very little mechanical effort. Applied with a micro-fiber cloth, polished for maybe 20-30 seconds, then wiped off. Plugged everything back in, turned on the avionics, and no more scratchy connection. Should work for quite a while by appearance.
-
@RLCarter I see. When in cruise I'll slide back to the first notch back from the takeoff position and stretch out a bit. I'll ponder. Thanks.
-
According to the mfgr, @LANCECASPER is the winner. See attached image. I thought about gold plating the plug and jack but that looks expensive. I'll try steel wool!

The mechanical stuff seems like a short term solution to a long term problem. What about a little acid bath then electroplating in something that is highly inoxidible? Any plating specialists out there? Regarding my seat position- I don't bump the actual connector, I move the leads that split and go to the mic and the PTT switch. They just kind of dangle there from the connector, which protrudes from the panel about3 inches. I'm 6' tall and ain't gonna use no rudder extensions.
-
The pilot's side mic jac has the PTT switch plugged in. When my left leg bumps up against the cable which is frequently- especially when maneuvering to land, I get an intermittent mic connection and crackling in the headset. Pulled the jack out from behind the panel this afternoon to inspect. It is simple. Not much to go wrong mechanically. I unscrewed the backing off the PTT insertion plug and it to is mechanically very simple and well built. It seems that the problem is just electrical connection. The PTT insertion plug was once probably shiny brass. Now it is well oxidized and darkened. The mic jack contacts are similarly tired. Any suggestions on a great way to clean both of these up? Thx.

You know what the shortest unit of time is in a man's life? 9 months. Yes, "we" got pregnant. That's the way we described it back in the good ol' 90's. It takes two if done well and properly.

It seems to me that there is certainly need for an up-to-date set of online IFR courses. At say $300 ea. times maybe 1000 licenses per year, that would be a business opportunity for someone with multi-media savvy and a strong desire to do excellent instruction.
-
OK, so I'm working on the instrument rating. I did ground school in 1982, then I got (1) poor, then (2) married and pregnant, then (3) busy. Now I'm (4) comfortable and not too busy, and I own a Mooney, so it is time to finish the IR. My A&P who also happens to be an instructor strongly suggested the King videos online as did several other people. Now, it is kind of weird seeing Martha age before my eyes. I'm almost all the way through the instrument approach lessons, and LNAV has not been mentioned. I get this question thrown my way just now: 5148 (Refer to Figure 253.) While executing the RNAV (GPS) RWY 18 LNAV approach at OSH, how would the missed approach point be identified? This is UNFAIR. I paid money for this course. What they have covered I learned when I did IFR ground school in 1982! It is a great refresher for IFR techniques ca. 1982 in fact. BUT there has been no mention in their course at this point of LNAV!! That is the new stuff that my 430W does, and I haven't learned anything from their course. It seems to me that if I were using a more current set of instructional materials I could be learning so much more about contemporary IFR flying. What about the use of EFBs? I'm seriously thinking about asking for a refund at this point. Their course is STALE. Is there a better alternative? Thanks, Fred

Hi everyone- I subscribe to Plane & Pilot. They picked the Mooney Acclaim Ovation as the plane of the year. 200kts, 100 gal. long range tanks. 1000NM range. 2-doors. Only in the high hundreds of thousand $$ range. Another interesting headline you don't read every day.... https://www.planeandpilotmag.com/article/tesla-in-a-plane-crash/

B11 B805 Accu TrakII on Ebay
0TreeLemur replied to MooneyPTG's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Only the manufacturer can approve installation of a particular piece of equipment in a particular model of aircraft, and surprisingly this permission is given on a per-airplane basis. There is no such thing as a blanket STC approval. That is how manufacturers can control who does installations. Garmin is very good at insisting that only authorized dealers install their equipment or you won't get the STC. Cecilia wrote me an STC for the installation of the B11 in my a/c that is in my files and will be important to show up at the next PPI. Glad to hear that Cecilia is still willing to provide approvals for new installations. Man, what customer service! IMHO the price that is being requested on Ebay is really high given that the future of the manufacturer is really uncertain, plus- low cost MEMS based autopilots are coming (maybe). -

B11 B805 Accu TrakII on Ebay
0TreeLemur replied to MooneyPTG's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I paid less than half what the current Ebay seller is asking for the hardware from a fellow MS'er (thanks!). When Brittain was having their "going out of business sale" I bought some replacement servo diaphragms and mentioned to Cecilia that I wanted to install the B11. She volunteered the STC paperwork! Awesome customer service. The instrument shop that did the install had difficulty obtaining a female connector for the signal cable. They wound up replacing it with a sub-D connector and filing a 337 on the mod. It works like a charm as my straight-as-a-great-circle flightaware ground tracks attest! Man we love the thing. We've named it Jerry. @MIR2018 Maybe the STC is still gettable if Cecilia is still in contact as Brittain Ind. Dunno. -

Having just installed an Accutrak II with STC provided by Brittain in February of this year, I resemble that remark. Perhaps the last STC installed Accutrak II ever. The one for sale on ebay wouldn't be legal to install with just yellow tags AFAIK.
