2,500 ft is not an issue if you're light and the grass is WELL maintained. But if you're talking about leaving a grass strip on a hot summer day fully loaded for a trip, I'd give it a second thought. I've flown my 231 into a few grass strips, but I knew them well and knew people that were flying into them frequently. The one runway I did multiple times, Basin Harbor (B06) was 3000 ft and never an issue. But it was maintained by the grounds crew for the golf course that was there. So as long as they didn't have a lot of rain in the preceding days, that runway was better than some hard surface ones I've landed at. Also, you need to be careful about the lower gear doors on the 231. If the grass is not cut short, and some grass strips keep it a bit long to maintain the field, that will be an issue.

Thanks for the update! -
Heard they arrested two guys for flying a drone around BOS. They were operating the drone from some island and a third guy escaped in a boat.

They know. But then if they tell everyone it's nothing, they can't get them hooked and then run the hype story for days and days to try and bump up their numbers. Actually, some people know. But based on how they can keep a straight face on this and other stories, I think a lot of them do not want to be told anything that contradicts what they're saying on air. This way they can claim they were just telling the story that made sense to them. I used to like FOX News, sorry... FOX "Entertainment" now days. But their stories are so full of holes now that I don't bother. All about the money for Merdoch and the people he has on the air. And it's not a Conservative vs Liberal thing, it's about a FULL story, even if it is slanted your way. They just now conveniently pick phrases or sections to rile people up to keep watching, even if it is NOT what really happened. (Mob mentality at it's finest. )

Re-fueling - What do you use for ground?
PeteMc replied to Paul Thomas's topic in General Mooney Talk
Note to Self... Pull a LOT more of the grounding wire out than you need and sort of whip it under the wing and then back out to your grounding point on the nose wheel. you'll never walk over or drag the hose over the grounding wire again. And that also means no more of those accidental disconnections when the wired gets pulled with the hose. -

There's got to be all sorts of residue on the inside from the gases. The the corrosion, oxidation and just crud as you mentioned on the outside. I was surprised though when he really cleaned the pipe down to bare metal there still was no conductivity. Anyone here know metals and what exhaust gases can do to an exhaust pipe to greatly increase the resistance? -

I'll have to check next time I get gas, but don't all gas stations now have warning signs to put external tanks on the ground before filling? So I guess YOU were the reason for the signs!!! -

Does anyone have a direct line to some of the senior people at AOPA? I know they were talking about insurance rates in general and also for pilots 70+ and they were going to meet with various Insurance Co. to talk about their number crunching for rates not meeting what the data shows. (Why there are accidents, older pilots not causing as many accidents and they're putting in their numbers, etc.) But I haven't heard anything new and calling the 800# didn't provide any new info. I'd be curious what, if anything, is happening with this project. And a totally unsubstantiated comment from someone at one of these meetings was that not just pilots, but all insurance holders across the board are getting hit because of all the insurance payouts the last 10+ years. Lots of floods, fires, storms, etc. have got the Insurance Co. looking at their bottom line. -

I've always used my non painted tie down, just like he does. VERY important point he made that you DO NOT want to skip over. He talked about touching the fuel nozzle to the plane if there is no grounding wire. But, as he said, you DO NOT want to touch near the open fuel tank neck without getting rid of static charge first. That's where all the fuel fumes are! -

And if I can ask, what is the ball park that you're paying? with Old Republic. Mine has jumped for the last three years and I'm now over $3K too. So I'm seriously looking. -
Since the plane just came out of the Avionics Shop, don't discount that you may also have a loose ground(s) in addition to the bad battery.

I don't typically go 5 hrs, more like 3.5 to 4+. I might take a few sips early in the flight, but once I get about to about an hour out from my destination I'll start hydrating. Also, it helps to really hydrate the day BEFORE your flight. Same is true if you're taking a commercial flight.

I'm assuming the "MO" is designating it was actually a Major Overhaul and not just a tear down and repair back to specs (leaving anything that was close but still in spec). My plane when I bought it was listed as X hours since Major. But going though the logs I only found a tear down and repair after a prop strike. When I got the logs to the mechanic to look over he told me they did a really good job and they came up just short of a Major. He couldn't figure out why they just didn't do it all.

New to me and I can’t find the Beacon switch
PeteMc replied to M20E78merlin's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Hearing the motor with no rotation may be a problem. I really don't remember if the lens wheel in my old beacon rotated when the bulb was out, but I thought it did. But if you're hearing things but not seeing any motion, it may be time to cut your losses. Even if some Tri-Flow or whatever gets it moving again, how bad is the corrosion and are you going to be opening it up every couple of weeks to keep it rotating? And I think Tri-Flow is okay, but whatever you use, make sure it's non-conductive and non-flammable. -
Thanks! I guess that's why I was not as excited about it as others seemed to be and didn't use it much.

Yes, I can log in to my Android App or to Windy.app on my computer. But Windy.com appears to be a different Website/Company. Not that there aren't multiple Wx Websites. But I did not know there were two separate "Windy" Websites.
-
So I just discovered there is a Windy.app and a Windy.com Website. My Android App User Name & PW work in the Windy.app site. So now I'm curious about the other one.

How about a Mooney lunch at the Radial Cafe @ KGPM?
PeteMc replied to TxAviator's topic in Texas Mooney Flyers
Well, you're heading in the right direction. If you add another 1,022nm we can all have lunch at the Skyway Cafe @ KSFF. -
CORRECTION: I was thinking of a ILS/LOC Approach below. Not sure if they even still have those, but if LOC is not in the Title, then you can not use GPS, it must be a NAV radio. So for those with GPS only, anything with ILS only in the Title you can't use. Actually, No.... You can use GPS in lieu of the Localizer. That warning is telling you that you can't fly the "ILS" Approach, or more specifically it is the Glide Slope you can't use the GPS for. So if you were going to fly it as a LOC Approach with the Step Downs, you'd be legal. Say the winds were howling and that was the only Approach to the best Rwy, go ahead and fly it as if the GS was out. But if you followed your GPS generated Glide Path (vs GS) down and something happened, you'd be doing the carpet dance (which they'd probably see on radar at a lot of airports).
-
Just so we're on the same page... Depending upon what the GPS175 is replacing in your plane, no more "Glide Slope" as in an ILS. The 175 is GPS only, so no ILS. I believe the KAP150 should be able to follow the "Glide Path" of a RNAV Approach. Subtle difference, but I've seen people load an ILS Approach and wonder why they're getting the "NOT APPROVED FOR GPS" warning message.
-
Probably more like a big desert or else you won't really see the early turn to the new heading. And I added a comment Flyover Wpts probably while you were replying. And I'm pretty sure the GPS175 will anticipate turns as long as the Autopilot is following the GPS. I think all the new Garmin Navigators will do it.
-
What kind of GPS and why do you think you need to test it? Specifically on your question, I don't know if avionics shops have the gear to spoof your GPS to test this, but I sort of doubt it. As for testing on the ground, you'd need a huge amount of space and a fair amount of speed. So it would be so much easier to just go fly. ADDED: Remember there are "Flyover Waypoint" so be sure not to choose one of those for your test. They're the ones with the Circle around the Wpt symbol and your GPS should always fly OVER those, then turn.

Google Fi is free? You don't have to have a Google phone with a plan or anything else? You just send in a request and you get free data? I must be missing something?

I say ground ship a box to KCXP a week before you go and cut down your baggage requirements. That will open up a lot of other potential aircraft. For the shorter PNW trips, obviously you'll need less fuel, so more in baggage.

252 vs 231 with wastegate/intercooler
PeteMc replied to StParkin's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I can't speak to the 252, but I have a 231 with the Merlyn wastegate (no intercooler) and engine management is pretty straight forward. You will see a bit if an increase in MP just after takeoff (I've always assumed to to increased airflow and a little better engine performance). Then as you continue your climb above 10K you'll see a slow decrease in MP, both of which just require a minor adjustment of the throttle to correct. A J is a good plane, but I think you're right that the 231/252 Encore, etc. might be better for you if you if you're constantly crossing the mountains. And even when get east of the Rockies on a X-US flight, I am always still in the mid teens. Usually you're above the Wx, better speeds and typically very little traffic, so you're not constantly getting call-outs from ATC or maybe even frequent vectors.
