Sure they are. Same as the paper charts. The "Do Not Navigate" means you can't look at the little airplane on the iPad and shoot an Approach. Even following the Magenta line while in cruise is technically a no-no. You use the APPROVED panel equipment to navigate and look at FF (or whatever) like you would look at your paper charts. Difference is your "finger" (the little plane) magically moves to where you are on the chart. You don't have to keep folding the map and figure out where you are.

iPad Mini 7 introduced 10/15/2024
PeteMc replied to LANCECASPER's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
On any iPad running FF or G Pilot your best bet for extending the battery life in flight is to first CLOSE all other Apps. iPadOS is pretty good about suspending Apps, but some still eat up power. Next BIG TIME item is to reduce the screen brightness when in cruise. You don't have to go so low that you can't see it, but for every bit you reduce the brightness you can save battery life AND keep the iPad cooler. (And you can also just turn off the screen too when in cruise to really save the battery and for cooling.) -
Much easier now with EFBs... Pick any Wpt on your Route in your EFB that has CURRENT charts and Tap on it to get the Lat/Long. Then pull that Wpt up in your panel GPS and confirm it is still in the same place. You've now confirmed that ONE Wpt in your Expired Database is still in the correct place according to a valid/current source. Repeat the process with ALL of the other Wpts in your Route. Then hope you don't get a reroute along the way with a bunch of complex Airways...

Garmin still let's you verify each waypoint if you're using an expired DB. But as you said, it would be a royal pain to do.

It's been quite a while since I've flow a plane with a carbureted engine. Was it an ol' wives tail or reality that you shouldn't really use "wide open" but crack the throttle back just a bit so the butterfly valve added a little turbulence to the airflow for better mixture? I remember the discussion way back when, but then stopped flying anything with a carburetor.

"Huckleberry" is not usually something I hear from someone down in southern CA...

I got one from Amazon a few years ago that I'm happy with. White, Red or Green light with multiple settings. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08975WM6Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&th=1

Not a Mooney, but I just saw a news story about a CubCrafters (CC11) setting down on the highway in Cupertino, CA. Remember to be very carful if you talk to reports if you do have an off field landing. You hear the reporter saying "...and asked the airport to fill the plane up with fuel." Then they cut to the pilot that says "We don't know what happened, if that happened or it didn't, but clearly I had an engine out." Sure **sounds** like he's saying he didn't check the tanks before takeoff. Maybe he didn't, but if he did and it was some other issue, he now still has to fight the uphill battle after it appears he said on the news that he didn't check the tanks.

Replacement: Rotating Beacon vs. Wingtip Strobes
PeteMc replied to Seth's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
It has a switch. I just leave it in the On position. -
Replacement: Rotating Beacon vs. Wingtip Strobes
PeteMc replied to Seth's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I like my Beacon (as well as the 3 point strobes). The difference with the Beacon is that I **NEVER** turn it off. So if the Master is On, the Beacon is On. -
I have one of these and they work great.

And since I usually cruise in the mid teens, I'm glad I had Diversity installed when I did the panel upgrade.

Not a lawyer... But I've been dealing with a few Trusts lately. Generally they are pretty straight forward, you may just need to read the Trust Document a couple of times. As for a lawyer... who created the Trust and how were you appointed? (Rhetorical question, don't give us the details in public.) But my point is, what's wrong with going to the attorney that created the Trust? Or was it done by the state?

And don't forget that in some Airspace now you must have Diversity ADS-B. Sure, you can get around it, but it will make it a lot easier if you have Diversity.

AOPA is (was?) working on it. Last I heard, because of bureaucracy, Canada was not going to change it on their own. So AOPA is trying to work through ICAO to subtly force Canada to accept Basic Meds because of their membership in ICAO. You might reach out to them to find out if there's been any movement.

We'll likely go next summer. I thought we might have done it this year, but it just didn't work out. And i think our next trip back east may be through Canada so I can knock off the lower Provinces like you have. And then there's Hawaii... It would be fun to say I did all the states in my plane, but don't think that's going to happen.

Thanks all !! I hadn't really thought about it until I came here and saw the maps and then saw how many stated I had been to on my various XCs. Just got back today from the PPP in FT Worth at KAFW and our XC that continued from there back to CT and NYC. With a quick look at the ForeFlight stats it looks like we did: 5,920.9nm, 17 Airports, 14 States (some 2 times) over 15 days. Only Wx issue was when we got to JAC, WY to visit a friend and the TAFs were now showing a lot more potential icing and moisture up in the PNW (gee, wasn't someone talking about the Mooney wing and ice just last week! ) So we ended up heading to Elko, NV (EKO) Sunday to see what really materialized. Sat out Monday due to the icing and rain in Elko and then did our final leg today. Broke out on top around 15K so our final at 16K had us in CAVU until the descent. Luckily no ice at either end and the only real pain was the 37kt headwind and the -15c temps. Oh yeah... and the controller changed my As Filed to go around a MOA that didn't show as active, so that added another 20+ minutes or so.

Recommendations for Mooney rigging - central Atlantic states

What can I tell you. I've never heard the stories and know multiple people that use him and have zero problems. ALSO... As I mentioned earlier, the guy giving the maintenance presentation at the Ft Worth Pilot Proficiency Program actually called him out as one of the few shops you SHOULD be going to. (He went on to talk about how few good Mooney shops there were these days.) So I'm sorry if you happened to have a bad experience. But if you "heard" bad things... I'll call BS and someone was probably pissed because they didn't fix something and finally got to Dave (or it could have been any good mechanic) and he charged them more than they wanted to pay. Or if it was a real issue, there is probably is a LOT more to the story that you probably didn't hear. ADDED: Just saw your comment about "the last few years" so again, you may be very miss informed. Over "the last few years" there have been things that have happened to a lot of companies. Air Mods fell into this when Dave was not at the shop for a few months. So again, I'm guessing you're spreading stories when you don't have all the details. But then not having heard the stories, I can only go on my personal experience and what I've personally seen happen with other customers. -

So even having to get around the DC and Phily airspace, it still would only be about 1:30ish flght. -

Hmm... Which Airport?? KJCR doesn't seem to come up. I'd go up to see Dave Mathiesen up at Air Mods. As a note... In the recent PPP in FT Worth during the Maintenance presentation, Dave was called out as one of the few really good Mooney Mechanics around. And NOTHING at all against Don Maxwell (obviously one of the greats). But Tx vs NJ is quite a difference when Dave is right up there in the same league. Air Mods & Repair, Inc. THURSDAY NIGHT DINNER We don't really know anything about the area, but we made a reservation at Classic Cafe At Roanoke @ 7:30. Give a call on the hotel phone if you want us to try and increase the reservation number. Pete McWilliams -
There's two ways to look at what and why you're taking things with you. I do think you need to keep your blood sugar up and you don't want to get dehydrated. So I take Kind Bars and some thing simple to eat like M&Ms Chips, etc. can leave you with lots of crumbs, so pick wisely. I don't drink any water at the beginning of the flight, but will start sipping about an hour before landing and stop about 20+ minutes out. (You can do the math and figure out why. ) But depending where you fly, there may be a much more important reason to have food & water onboard. Even if you make a perfect Off-Field Landing, it may be a day or so before anyone finds or gets to you. So you'll want something with you to keep your energy up and to stay hydrated. Things like Kind Bars are simple and may not sustain you for weeks, but will for hours or a day or two (at worst). Oh, and as for the Travel Johns, etc. YES, have them... But we typically don't plan a flight more than 4 hours (unless it's the end of day and you're only talking a few extra minutes). Gives you a chance to get out of the plane and walk around, take a Bio Break and leave again. Sure, even if you only stop for a few minutes, the landing, being there and then the climb back up will loose you time. But you'll feel better at the end of the day.

@rturbett Take another look at my Lower 48 map! I finally got around to checking off UT on our way down to the PPP in Ft Worth (KAFW). Great overnight in Moab, UT just because it was someplace we wanted to stay.
