I hadn't noticed that, but of course they did.... On Pilot, here's the link for the recording of this mornings Webinar on the new SmartCharts: https://register.gotowebinar.com/recording/viewRecording/5427450425635572825/8939216898552200796/pete@flightmaster.us?registrantKey=4866260791280257884&type=ATTENDEEEMAILRECORDINGLINK&fbclid=IwY2xjawKtvwJleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBicmlkETFVQ2dSYng1OE9tTXRadWJVAR7XuEmDMya3Z4bCXZ_-AagzdcRTHheVMQc5OpXlx4qhz2I9obrVd_K0rJVDTQ_aem_ORiYKjZ8xKGJIL8KqEfWgg

Starter Adapter now, new airplane is snakebit!
PeteMc replied to Ragsf15e's topic in General Mooney Talk
OH... oops. I read it as the starter was still working and you were planning repairs. -

Where are you off to this time? Far enough of a distance that you'll actually notice the speed difference from the F? -
At what RPM should ALT VOLTs annunciation extinguish?
PeteMc replied to hazek's topic in Mooney Bravo Owners
Just curious... With 5 Amps coming from the minder, I'm guessing you're still seeing a slight discharge on the Amp Meter when you've got your avionics on? -
I always thought they should include the Basic in the OnePak and then have you pay for the Premium. But I guess their Marketing people think it's working that way. I also thought there should be a Pilot Lite for those that just want to use Pilot to update their DBs. Though I'd probably still use the SD Card for speed and consistency.

In a 231, the oil pressure will often be at the bottom of the green as the oil temp rises. In the summer you can be right at the yellow line.

Well OF COURSE that is true!!! My one partial engine failure (I learned later it was soon to be total failure) happened when I reduced power to duck down under the NY Class B. So you're not going to convince me it's not true!!!! And it must have been shock cooling because I didn't take 20 minutes to reduce 10" of MP.

Are you running the latest version of iPadOS? It requires iPadOS 17.4 or higher. Also, how much available memory? And I heard the installation of the latest version with SmartCharts required a new download of the database(s). So if that's the case and you would have to wait for the new download anyway, you could always delete your current version and reinstall the new one.

Okay, I'll bite... So there are multiple articles and VERY SMART people that say shock cooling is a myth. Many also say that if shock cooling was an issue, then shock heating would be an issue since you're also putting expansion stress on the metal. But please show me the proof that it is NOT a myth as you seem to be indicating. Your credentials, documentation, longevity data, etc., etc. As for longevity on why it's a myth. Look at the flight hours of jump planes, tow planes and all the training flights over the last 50 years or so and note that there is no overwhelming data to show that chopping the power completely will cause any problems. But again, I'm open to looking at your data and how you present that it shows the other flights that do go from Takeoff or Cruise power to idle or near idle multiple times a day (actually within an hour in many cases).

Agree that BOTH rings need to be changed. But is there any chance you're getting water when you get fuel? I checked the tanks one time before a flight, flew around a bit using both tanks, and landed at a different airport to get fuel. I don't rush to check for water after filling and always check the first tank I filled. I pulled huge amount of water out of the first tank I had filled, none out of the other. No idea how long it had been since the last person used the pump at this airport, but obviously they had water in the tank that settled by the time I used it.

@Ragsf15e and all in the SFF area... Were you planning to go to the Sky Queen's party? https://www.eventbrite.com/e/felts-field-sky-queens-kick-off-party-tickets-1366695054699?fbclid=IwY2xjawKdsSdleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFOZVV6M0JKWE9SbnNUNlBOAR7IBbGSfatyMd0zfeBGkRmrLGvRF47p6QocQUNHjDa-u5G3e_r0BIaghuJ3HA_aem_4x_b8-y6NHBeH_uLG-GC5Q

Not sure about your plane, but if I'm already heading down at 500ft/min and at the yellow arc and ATC says to EXPEDITE my descent... Sorry, pulling the throttle is not going to give the controller what they are expecting you to do. They want to see an immediate change in the descent rate and there's going to be a delay in my K before the speed really drops enough to make a difference. Sure, in the real world if I know it is calm and expect it to be all the way down, I'll push into the yellow to get a better descent and then just let the speed bleed off, but even that may not be enough. So I suggest "unable" if you're already at the yellow line.

I do believe shock cooling is a myth, otherwise shock heating would destroy the engine every time we take off. But even so, I also agree with you that if you don't have to suddenly pull the throttle out all at once, it's better for the engine as it is a mechanical thing with lots of moving parts. But if you're going to fly IFR, you're going to have to accept sudden descents and the need to make a large power reduction.

This is where I think most of us go: https://visitednorthamericamap.com/ The US image I upload is 200x129 (38KB) to give you a size reference.

Mine was based off of states I have landed in. I was both the PIC and Sole Manipulator of the Controls... but didn't really think about it. Just where I landed. And I hope to make it up to AK this year. And then like @Skates97, I think I'll rent in HI vs adding tanks for the extra fuel I'd want to have onboard to get there.

I remember one update a couple of years ago that was flaky. Haven't had any issues since then.
-
I guess I shouldn't have said "rejoin" just joining. Speed and making sure you were slowing before you actually got to the other plane was something the guy teaching me drilled in. I remember in the early training watching people try to join with way too much speed and just blowing by. When I did it, we were doing basic stuff and the angles were pretty tame. But I get how picking the wrong angle can really mess you up.

I update my GTN with a SanDisk Ultra 32GB SD Card, works every time. $8 on Amazon, so I'm sure you could find it cheaper somewhere else. You will also need to download Garmin Aviation Database Manager to put the updates on the SD Card. I don't like pulling the FS510 all the time, but, the updates are quick and simple Just don't rush anything and gently put both the SD and the FS Cards in so that you don't accidentally force them.

IFR avionics panel planning - need for VOR /LOC/GS?
PeteMc replied to AJ88V's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Never say never. Not so much around Yakima maybe, but there are people more in the SW that have frequently run into GPS issues from military testing. And yes, they also don't usually jam the entire time. The test are often within the times posted, but relatively short. So you may not even notice... Unless you're shooting an Approach. -
IFR avionics panel planning - need for VOR /LOC/GS?

Here's some perspective of why we should all have at least one ILS/LOC/VOR onboard. And for those unfamiliar with the PNW, the circles cover all of WA, most of ID, some of MT, most of OR and a good chunk of BC up in Canada. Have a someone that knows take a REALLY CLOSE LOOK at the logs. When I went to buy my plane it was being sold as X hrs SMOH, but even when I looked at the logs it raised some red flags. It also had had a prop strike and when they did the teardown they did a LOT of work on anything that looked worn or concerning. But it was just very close to an overhaul, but not quite. So just make sure it was an real, official overhaul and not a teardown and rebuild due to the prop strike.
