  1. I didn't see it in the Service Manual. I'll look again.
  2. Over in FB someone mentioned that the K (231 in my case) Cowl Flaps should be set to be 1" Open when indicating Closed. I've never had a mechanic rig mine that way and I've never seen any other K that way. Am I missing something? And yes, I do know you can drop the cowl flaps a bit when it is hot out, I drop the right side a bit every summer. But I'm talking the technically correct adjustment of the cowl flaps per Mooney.

  4. Your comment on "Extreme" threw me and I was about to point out that as @Pinecone mentioned, Simple Green is corrosive to aluminum. I thought the "Extreme" was going to be even worse. So I was looking up the correct name for what I thought used to be Simple Green Aircraft and now see they call it "Simple Green - Extreme Aircraft and Precision Cleaner."
  5. Really makes you wonder about the QC and just basic testing if we had to go from 57 to -25? I love my GTN, but it was a pain figuring out you had to go to 0. From my Tech experience, I could see the Avionics guy just questioning why he kept moving it down so far to get it to work.
  6. So is the button on the side for the Speed Brakes (per the label)? Have you tried to trace out the wires? Maybe it went to some Nav Device or something else that was removed sometime in the past.
  7. Pics I've seen have it right by the fuselage. ADDED: It wasn't a Mooney though and don't know the condition of the plane before they lifted it.
  8. I just went through this. The switch may be repairable if you have the time and talent. I almost went down that path, but ultimately went with a new switch because of time and not having the tools or work bench I used to have back in the day. I did have the shop keep my old one, so it may end up on Ebay some time if I ever get around to it. As for your $1,800 price, if some shop has one on the shelf and offers you that price TAKE IT!! There was a price increase a year or so ago and I confirmed I wasn't getting gouged with my old mechanic. You're now looking at $2,100+ if they have to order one.
  9. It should be that hard for an experience lift team. The insurance companies probably have contacts for this. Not having any real knowledge on this process, it still doesn't seem that hard. With no engine I'm assuming the the plane is tail heavy, but it really doesn't matter. You figure out if it is nose or tail heavy and add as much wight to the tail to insure the plane is balanced or slightly tail heavy. Then you put a strap under each wing and one back by the tail and lift away. Who knows, if there's enough scuffing he'd even get a new paint job out of the insurance co. Or at least a good detailing at a paint shop.
  10. I've heard of helicopters recovering planes. And it will be a lot lighter now without the engine.
  11. Sorry, missed it was both RNAV and ILS you were talking about. Just remembered "GS" and thought it was an issue capturing the GS on an ILS.
  12. I'm not sure what you're asking? If it has to do with what I'd do after the missed, then the ATC part is key in that conversation. My comment about adding the Apt at the end was if ATC Cleared me to my Alternate. Now whether I'd take the time to clean up the old Approach and add add the next Apt to my FP would have a lot to do with if that Apt was 5 min away or 30 min away? That will factor in to what you're going to do. Pending the distance ATC may give you a Route or, the very few times I've gone to an Alternate, they just clear me Direct. So I'd clean up the old Approach, add the new Apt to the end and go. Or you can just press the Direct Button and stick in the new Apt, whatever works for you. Then once on your way you can plug in the Approach for the next Apt. Probably what you planned on, but you never know if the winds have changed, someone blew a tire or whatever. So I never assume the Approach I think I'll get from my mid flight check or even from before the flight will be what you actually will get. Or if the Apt is 5 min away, odds are ATC is going to send you to a Fix that starts the Approach. So that's where you just go into PROC, change to the new Apt, pick the Approach and Activate to that Fix.
  13. That seems like a LOT of extra work for no reason. Don's way is about about 1/3 of the keystrokes for just the first FP you're programming in, not to then count all the others. If you missed the process it is simple. So I'm taking the original question to mean VFR Practice Approaches so even if you're talking to ATC, there's no Clearance involved. So you get to the MAP and go missed. Anywhere in the process now that you've told the GTN you're going Missed you go to PROC, change the Apt to the next one you're flying to (or use the same Apt), pick the Approach, pick the entry to the Approach or Vectors and Activate the Approach. Now follow the Magenta Line. You do not need to go into the FP and remove the old Approach, load a new Apt, none of that. If you load a new Approach to a new Airport, the GTN is taking you to the new Apt. (Or take you to the fix for a different Approach at the same Apt.) If on a real Approach in IMC, it's basically the same thing. You can either go hold at the Missed Approach Point or just tell ATC you need to go to your Alternate. Since you have the time I'd probably take the time to remove the old Approach and add the new Apt at the end or add the Clearance I got to the end, but it's not necessary. If the next Apt is close and you don't want to punch buttons, you can just add the new Approach and away you go.
  14. Just had another thought. Are you Arming the Approach before you switch the IFD to VLOC (or it switches on it's own)? Wondering if there's a "glitch" when switching from GPS to VLOC that's messing up the AP if you've already put it in the Approach mode?
  15. Not sure about what you need to purchase. But you're going to need an Aspen shop to install it, so best check with them. And if you have an Autopilot, which one and is your friend giving you the EA100 I'm assuming he has for his old AP. Also, is it a Legacy 1000 or a ProMax? I've had a Pro Max for 3 years now and it's been great.
  16. Following up on what @MikeOH said. The non certified units may be accurate to the 1/100th of a degree or even better out of the box. But what happens after a year or two of sitting on the ramp or in you hangar as the temperature fluctuates greatly. And what about that hard landing you had last week, and the one because of the crosswinds 8 months ago and then the one a year ago.... And that 1 cent part they put in instead of the 2 cent part... Sort of makes sense why the FAA doesn't just give them a blank approval because they are super accurate in a temperature controlled lab.
  17. Both the GROL and the RROP (what most pilots get) are good for your lifetime.
  18. I wouldn't think one year would be an issue IF everything was okay before it was parked. But certainly something to keep in the back of your mind on the first few flights.
  19. It will be interesting to hear what the story is about buying a plane and then letting it sit for 9 months. I think @MikeOH hit the nail with "it needs MONEY!"
  20. Remember each leg is just like flying from your home Apt to some new lunch spot. It's not one giant flight, but a bunch of individual flights, no biggie at all that you've never been there before. And I'm with the group that no longer looks for the cheapest fuel when not in my home area. Not to say that if I'm stopping in a bigger metro area I won't shop around, but I don't usually pick small Apts in the middle of nowhere because I can save a few cents per gallon. Having a mechanic and people around in case there's an issue are a big plus. Besides search for hotels/motels at overnight stops, I'll also call the FBO. Sometimes they have deals with local places and can also guide you to parts of town where it's easy to get to restaurants (or places with restaurants). Some places also have shuttle vans that make it easier. I always have a bag full of snack bars, M&Ms or whatever. Every once in a while you get someplace and that Apt rest. is closed and you really don't want to spend the time getting to the one that's 20 min. each way and probably has a line too.

  23. Is this the good ol' Mooney lock (he says with a bit of a smirk) or did you ever have it replaced? And I'm guessing my K has the same type cylinder as your J.
  24. Email? To Mooney Flyer or to an individual CFI??? Go back to the list and keep scrolling down. After the top part of the list with CFI name, it starts showing them by state and they usually say what Airports they're by. So you should be able to reach out directly to some CFIs that are in your area.
  25. The Mooney Flyer list is probably going to be your best bet. I'm not sure how many CFI(I)s use their own planes due to insurance. But I have heard of some.
