Something not right here as I made no mention on CG. I believe CooperDog made this reply.

Mine: 1. Tower, Keep your speed up their is an airliner on a 10 mile final behind you 2. Turkeys on the runway on takeoff 3. Sick Passenger 4. Fatigue combined with a pseudo emergency by an instructor 5. Getting to the fuel pumps first 6. Getting to the runway first 7. Other pilot in the pattern using the opposite runway with poor winds 8. Rapidly approaching cloud layer 9. In a perceived hurry 10. Where did that weather come from Any could have killed me and those that I love. Glad I was "Not that guy". Would be blessed to be "This guy"... 1

I have been down this road before with you. What's the title of the article that this incident could very well be in the future?...NEVER AGAIN.
-
I had a bad day today and the news that you and your family survived a brutal experience does indeed bring me a massive amount of joy. When you are at your child's graduations, opening Christmas presents, celebrating their wedding and birth of your grandchild think of that day and say a quiet thanks that the fickle hand of fate...that is the hunter...for not smiting you and your family. I wish you all a wonderful life. As a brilliant actor once said with his dying breath... Earn it. PS-search out your arch angel and reward him over and over again. His prompt action could have also saved your family. My suggestion would be a bottle of scotch mailed every year on the date of the incident...your new "Birthday". When German pilots survived a close call they would get uproariously drunk to celebrate their "Birthday"...for they were granted a second life. Happy Birthday to you and your family CooperDog. Celebrate!

STFU. Enough already...FCS....NOT cool. You are only amusing/entertaining yourself at this point.

Didn't someone die? News article says fatality and hospital. In what way was that a "good" landing, because all didn't die?

I set mine in Garmin for 10.3 the pessimistic prop windmilling. Still almost 15 miles at 7500 feet. 100MPH best glide if prop stopped and 105MPH if windmilling in my M20E
-
Garmin Pilot has pilot settable glide ratio rings.

Interesting. That is unfortunate. I will do some comparisons with my plane at 100 ROP and see how close they are to the AP/theoretical listings. They worked out close to Hank's "47" formula, which is a good "basic rule" to keep power below 70 down low where "red box" and pressure issues are more pronounced. The re-leaning/lean find at different altitudes was a duh/aha moment for me. Cylinder temps have always been happy where I have resided for power, but tool is only as good as the input provided for sure.
-
Ya, not flying 25-50ROP. The AP I found gives easy data that I can experiment with keeping power at 65%. I can match these and see how my plane performs. I have "revisited" my G3 operating procedures for lean-find as my "stupidity" on NOT re-leaning with altitude changes is pretty epic....Oh well, learn something every day, right?

Where do you purchase your oil?
MyNameIsNobody replied to MyNameIsNobody's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Drove to Oshkosh this year as I picked up a large piece of art my niece had made in Randolph and then headed North. Car was pretty packed, but I probably could have gotten a case in there...The hassle would be shlepping it around EAA grounds and back to car on bus in parking lot. Probably "Not do-able"... GREAT price though! -
Where do you purchase your oil?
MyNameIsNobody replied to MyNameIsNobody's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I just bought a case of X/C for $78 on Amazon. Ships out of MN. Free shipping. I am in IA. Close. Signature was NOT that far off at $84. Of course there would be tax too... Anybody beat that $78 price by a good amount? -
I have always purchased a case of oil from the local FBO. I had checked prices with shipping and was always a better deal. Anybody have a "great deal" on oil they would like to share? Thanks,

-a- Never thought I was LOP at that fuel flow. Just didn't think to re-set at 5500. 12GPH would NOT be the fuel flow I would use in my IO-360. This review was for little vintage 4-bangers not for the IO-550 drivers. I evaded a thunderstorm and some serious winds and rain with my temporary High Fuel Flow/power exercise. As I stated, No regrets. Found a new tool I will definitely be using to confirm what are theoretical safe power fuel flows and power settings for specific altitudes. A LOP guy never hung out in the box, but he is going to break out of the theoretical absolute of lower speed in his bird. Especially when Up High...
-
Fuel flow is the KEY to power. You can get economy or Power at 25 squared at 3000 feet. It is about the flow and watching the cylinders. The way I have flown my plane (regarding fuel flow) has been EXTREMELY conservative. Cylinder temps have always been happy. My digging has re-affirmed this. Definitely going to explore more ROP power from time to time keeping it below 70% That thinking is WRONG. Hank your 47 is key. Matches up well with theoretical AP. Thanks for info.

Hmmmmm. Maybe I was closer to 50LOP and with a mixture increase of over 2GPH moved right into Best Power from deeper LOP. THAT would explain this, or at least gives some credence to my noted increase in ground speed being so signifigant. I had leaned for 7500 and dropped to 5500 with no further engine control adjustment prior to mixture/fuel flow increase.
-
I am the one that is sorry as I wasn't very clear in my communication. This is really making me have questions. I try to fly at 7500, but often go higher or lower depending on clouds as I am VFR. I never re-do lean-find with altitude changes. I will now. I can adjust my find number on G3. I have set for 10-15 LOP. I usually have fuel flows that are higher than Bartmann listed. (9-9.5GPH are common indictated flows) with ALL solid white EGT on four cylinders. Of course they bounce a little, but I just don't see 8.5GPH flow indicated. HMMMmmmmm?

I wonder why there are not some charts created by people that own Mooney's with this information? With engine monitors it is easy to plug in different LOP and ROP settings. The only good data I could find was the % chart (that is theoretical) due to differences in props and airframes etc....But it IS something. I will definitely be checking what speed difference is at different power/fuel settings at different altitudes and recording the info. Bob, have you ever done this with your plane? You speak to the 7-8 knots going LOP to ROP is this what you have generally seen? If it is only that, not worth the fuel burn penalty, BUT 20 knots? Hell yes on some days when headwind is keeping ground speed in the sub 130 knot range...and it is hot down low...and a little choppy... Anyway, thanks for input and clarification. Does anybody else have some data on the increase from LOP to ROP or are people all like me. Firmly in one camp or the other? My cylinder temps were not significantly different LOP to ROP. I will stay below 70% power in the future.
-
Fair enough. Is it possible that a headwind suddenly became a benign or tail wind at the moment that I added fuel and went from LOP to ROP...Yes. I had been flying an hour at that point and speeds were consistent. I hadn't seen any significant loss/gain in ground speed at 5500 vs. 7500 UNTIL I increased fuel flow. I agree that 20 knot increase of ground speed is huge. THAT is why I was so surprised and thought (damn, I have been missing out on some big speed gains by always flying LOP vs 100 ROP). I will definitely be doing some more flights LOP and then resetting lean-find to 100 ROP on G3 and seeing what difference in ground speed is for my plane.
-
So what have I learned? 1) From Economy to Power fuel setting (LOP to ROP) in my plane at 5500' I realized a 20 knot gain. 2) The G3, when set to monior 15 LOP and set up for one altitude will give erroneous readings. 3) Cylinder Temps were not significant + or - 320 with power cruise setting. 4) There are times when burning $10 an hour more in fuel is worth it. 5) Going fast can be addictive...in addition to burning < fuel. 6) Owning a plane that can do both is awesome.
