Indeed. I mentioned that only because it sounded like Avemco had told you that they would refuse coverage at age 80 -
-
Just got a quote from Avemco with an 81yo named insured. No problem at all. No restrictions, and a pretty reasonable price (higher than others, but still in the ballpark). This was for a fixed-gear single.

Sheesh. What's your secret? Feels like it's up up up for most of us (ETA: I'm also with Parker.)

I thought Garmin offered a rather expensive upgrade path, or was that only a one time offer when the Xi was released? I’m not aware that they ever offered a GTN upgrade option. As far as I know, the only way to upgrade is to buy an Xi and sell a GTN - which some avionics shops will do for a fixed price (I’ve heard 5k USD quoted for the 750).

I kind of assumed he had a remote #2 comm controlled by the GTN?

Nice

This is a very good point, and really underappreciated. Not to mention how many years we would add to our collective flying careers if we'd all lose an average of 30 pounds.
-
Support is ending for the original GNS navigators, but the WAAS units still have some life left. I'm starting to worry a bit about the original GTN series, since they're now ten years old and there's no upgrade path to the Xi. But I suspect that there's another decade of factory support (especially since these were being sold new a year ago).

Yep, for your IFR data bundle, they give you the VFR copy of GP
-
Yeah, ForeFlight can do flight plans via Connext, but the Garmin proprietary stuff (EIS, db concierge) needs GP.
-
To my knowledge, there is no free version of Garmin Pilot. You’ll have to pay. This is an ongoing pain point for me, since you don’t even get the full IFR version of GP with a database bundle - you still have to pay $75 on top of your many many AMUs and a $700 annual subscription.

Also, you can do dual PFD displays with the G3X (or even up to three 10.6”). I’m wondering if the list above is old? https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/682215

Also, remote audio support is available with the G3X Touch “GMA 245R adds a remote audio panel option that is controlled from a G3X Touch display.” (ref same article above)
-
EIS data can be streamed to an iPad with a G3X touch display. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/blog/aviation/teamx-adds-new-features-to-g3x-touch-and-g5-for-certified-aircraft/

We had a longish discussion about the Mooney spar here a while back..
-
Iirc the screen resolution is identical. They're both 1280x768. https://mooneyspace.com/topic/29441-g3x-touch-certified/?do=findComment&comment=494091

Interoperability is the biggest difference. We've had a few longish threads on the topic here, and other aviation boards have similar. Elsewhere on the interwebs, Aviation Consumer has a nice review of the G3X Touch, and includes some discussion of the Txi advantages/disadvantages. Fwiw.. https://www.aviationconsumer.com/aircraftreviews/garmin-g3x-touchwide-reaching-stc/

I'm strongly considering going there for some incidental repair (tire change, whatever) just to see what they're all about. Their website is almost completely blank, but their Facebook page does mention that they're a MSC. I'm really excited by the presence of a MSC in KC again, and if it's a good shop then I'd like to give them some business. The AOPA page seems to have more comprehensive information than any other resource I've found: https://www.aopa.org/destinations/business/28446 Curiously, it doesn't mention Mooney as a supported type, but the information is a few years old. Maybe they've hired a Mooney-certified tech?

Nice. I started using a TD2 during Covid for instrument currency - local flight school rents for $25/hr. It's actually quite good, very little learning curve.
-
Also worth noting that even the on-site NTSB spokesperson said that they were relying on ADS-B data for initial assessments. So we should probably take his comments with a grain of salt too. I assume that their official reporting will be based on more reliable (but less convenient) sources.
-
Yep, understood. I wasn’t around for the introduction of 100LL, but I assume that there was a certain amount of infrastructure stress at that point too?

Dunno. I ran Exxon Elite for many years as the replacement for AV-1, but it was *really* hard to find at FBOs on the road. Always had to plan ahead and bring any oil that would be needed for the trip. My best guess was that Exxon just didn’t have the oil distribution network that Aeroshell has. I had no problem at all finding Aeroshell 15w50, but Elite was basically impossible to find.
-
For whatever it's worth, I had a very positive experience with AV-1 in a NA four-banger. Most of the problems were with turbo big-bore motors, but it was a fantastic oil for some of us. I do think that GAMI is trying to head off an AV-1 scenario by testing with a wider array of engines before announcing the STC, even though the STC itself is pretty narrow. As you say, time will tell
