  1. Got it! Thomas Hunnicutt Thanks!
  2. Yeah, me too! Honestly, I think a lot of piston singles are rotting on ramps because people who flinch at dropping $1,000 on maintenance bought them
  3. WOW! $92 to change a light bulb???
  4. My GoogleFu is failing me... Does someone have the hero's full name so I can nominate him?
  5. How did you measure speed? Did you perform a careful 3 or 4 way check, or just looked at the GPS groundspeed? Also, it looks like your book numbers for 10,000 wouldn't apply since you were at 11,275 DA.
  6. Did the controls reverse?
  7. You are correct. It's just 70% power. Thing is, at that setting, and weight, book is 172 mph for stock; I was only seeing 168...and I've got all the mods!
  8. Thank you for answering!
  9. Good points. Looks like hangartoolbox.com is dead It can't hurt to call the local MSC and ask. Thanks
  10. What mods does your F have?
  11. Ah, good point! Do you happen to know where they are for rent?
  12. Thanks! That makes me feel a bit better. Looks like I didn't get anything for all the mods beyond the cowl closure Good thing the plane came with them already installed!
  13. While I've never had to put it to the test, I'm going with pragmatic engineering vs. theoretical best speed. For my F I'm going to trim for 100 mph and call it a day; I'm going to be a LOT more worried about picking a spot and which direction the wind is coming from (which is going to have a FAR more significant effect on glide distance). I'm too lazy to do the math, but I'm wondering how much actual distance difference there is when gliding from 5000 AGL at 93 vs. 107 mph...my SWAG is: not too damn much. Yeah, yeah, yeah someone will say if I come up 10 feet short and hit a tree I should have used the proper speed for my weight at the time...oh, well.
  14. Tach is Horizon digital, so I'm pretty sure that's okay The 146 kts was a three-way "horseshoe'" GPS speed test, so airspeed indicator was not even a factor. I've got a friend with jacks, so maybe I check that first at no cost; having the rigging checked sounds expensive... Thanks!
  15. These speed threads, as of late, have got me in a funk. Previously, I thought I was moving right along...I guess I'm flying a slug. My 1970 M20F has the following mods: Lower cowl closure; 201 windshield; gap seals on ailerons, flaps, elevator; one piece belly, dorsal fin mod; PowerFlow exhaust. At 10,000 DA, WOT, 2500 rpm, 10.3 gph, 2250 lbs. I'm only seeing 146 kts Cowl flaps open or closed didn't seem to make even 1 knot difference??? So, what say the cognoscenti on what order I should attack the following (most bang for the effort): Flap rigging Aileron rigging Nose gear doors Main gear doors Fixed step (I'm willing to ditch the thing if there will be a marked improvement)
  16. Here you go: http://www.nar-associates.com/technical-flying/horseshoe_heading/horseshoehead_screen.pdf
  17. BINGO! Dr. Rogers 'horseshoe' (3 way) method is the way to measure speed accurately. His paper is excellent but you do need to ok with basic algebra to appreciate it.
  18. I made a speed run and managed 146 kts in my '70 M20F. Details here: https://mooneyspace.com/topic/27224-improved-speed-documented/page/4/?tab=comments#comment-449027
  19. How to catch roadrunners?
  20. I've been fighting high oil temps (and concomitant low oil pressure) since I bought my plane. In hot weather I was seeing 225-235 degrees. New baffles helped some (5 degrees lower), had the Vernatherm checked (I asked about the seat but didn't get a real confident response so that could still be an issue), had the oil cooler properly overhauled by Pacific Oil Cooler and new oil lines installed (about 15 degrees). So, all told, about a 20 degree reduction, but I still see over 200 degrees. Now, those readings are off my G3 engine monitor. The stock gauge used to tickle red-line in hot OAT conditions, but is now well below. However, it still shows 3/4 scale. At this point I'm just living with it... (BTW, CHTs are all low 300s in cruise) Good luck!

  22. Their decision was based on hours, 2100; we never made it to age
  23. Yuup! I called LASAR and they wouldn't do an annual as my engine is past TBO. So, Top Gun got my business
  24. You need to leave. Frankly, I hope your insurance company reads your post and CANCELS your policy.
