With the new PFD MAX and the MFD MAX with extended battery the AI is not required either. https://aspenavionics.com/products/general-aviation/efd-1000-pro-max This game is way to expensive for me not to KNOW the rules. Thats what Aspen is aiming for. It will be clear if the Aspen MAX are certified and available. The website is speaking of January now for the certification. But I agree a good step forward. -

not sure what changes with the Aspen MAX but a backup (IAS; ATT, ALT, compass) is still needed with the Evolution 2000 (MFD and PFD) see installation manual Aspen.pdf -

I had the same question and decided finally for the L3 ESI-500. I'm very happy with it. You can do more on the L3 than the G5 (e.g. SV) . In the mean time Aspen sells L3 products as well what helps to get a better package price. I know the L3 is more expensive than the G5 but from my PoV it worth it. Hendrik -
I'm still looking for an alternative for my Spot3 (interference with WAAS GPS). right now I'm looking at the following options: Garmin InReach mini ($350 plus subscription) King Bendix Text and Track ($399 plus subscription) Both supporting 2 way communication. The SpotX I ruled out due too the interference and usability (keyboard, font) of the SpotX devices. Does anyone have real world experience of the InRech or the Text and Track? InReach and King Bendix are Iridium based. The King Bendix also features an external antenna what could increase the usability in Mooneys. Also some METAR request could be sent. I found also the different subscription approach very interesting. Se the inReach below. I could find anything on the King Bendix thanks Hendrik

There is not a lot of routes that can be flown without a ferry tank or at least file FL250 over the north atlantic. The way over Frobisher Bay is kind of a usual alternative and doesn't require HF or FL250. For US pilots feelings the fuel in Greenland could be quite expensive (approx. $20 per GAL). There is also no night flights over the ice cape from or to Greenland airports. Planning is key.... I know its limited in MS but in case you speak Germany here is a very helpful doc thats also maintained with basically all needed information and procedures likes customs, FBO's, rescue equipment etc. Hendrik

July 11, 2018 Dear Valued Customers and Partners, I am writing to you to in response to a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) issued on July 9, 2018 by the FAA regarding an airworthiness concern for aircraft equipped with the Aspen EFD1000 primary flight display. An Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) event on an aerial application aircraft (Air Tractor - AT-802A) occurred when the aircraft was operating under night VFR conditions. Unlike the majority of aircraft in the general aviation fleet, this particular installation had a high intensity light that draws high electrical currents. Turning this on impacted both the whiskey compass of the aircraft and the Aspen Directional Gyro (DG), and attitude displayed on the Aspen EFD1000. The Aspen system is designed, like other EFIS systems, with a magnetometer that must be installed in an area of the airplane that is not susceptible to magnetic interference. Aspen provides flexibility and instructions to the authorized dealer on where to install the magnetometer during the system installation. If modifications are made to your aircraft after your Aspen system has been installed, that could potentially affect the heading system, it is recommended your shop recalibrate your Aspen system in accordance with the installation manual procedures. We are cooperating fully with the FAA, and it is not an airworthiness concern. I have been flying confidently and without issues behind Aspen equipment for over 8 years, as well as my sales, flight test team and Aspen Board of Directors member, retired AOPA President Phil Boyer. Again, if your Aspen installation was signed off in your aircraft logbook and tested according to the installation manual, there's no need for concern. Need Mooney Ferry Pilot (US to Germany)

Hi Tim, I have flown my and other Mooneys several times back and forth between Germany and the US. End of August I will fly with a M20K to Boston from Germany. My home base is presently KBED. Happy to chat (gern auch auf Deutsch). The bigger part of the preparation was all the time to get the paperwork set up. Especially if you like to keep the Mooney in the EU. Insurance for the ferry flight, tax handling (assume the Mooney is part of your moving goods) etc. There are some things that needs to be planed ahed if its not just a visit for some weeks. The routing is almost given with a J and just have some "weather options". You would also need a ferry tank for some more routing options. There are several options for a ferry pilot. Guido or Arnim are just some. Why you are not flying with one of the guys? It's a very impressive flight. Hendrik -

Thanks for the feedback. I spoke to spot. It seems they are aware of the issue and the only recommendation that I got was to increase the distance between GPS antennas, GPS device and the Spot. Not really a reliable option for me and a spot in the baggage compartment is not very use-full. So the only option to me is selling the spot and cancel the subscription. does anybody has experience with the Garmin inReach? Its a satellite messenger as well but is using Iridium instead of Globalstar. If Oscar had an issue with the GDL51 it seems similar with Iridium. Thanks Hendrik

after going through a bit of an avionic upgrade in my M20K I realised that my Garmin 750 and 650 interferes with my Spot3 (www.findmespot.com). Both GPS loosing there connection/ position frequently (I asume in the transmission mode of the the spot). The Spot was placed on the glare shield and the antennas are mounted as first on top of the plane behind the wind screen. The spot is using the Globalstar satellite network so far as I remember. I was using the spot for quite some years and I especially liked the tracking, and alert option over some longer flights over the North Atlantic. Does anyone have similar experience? any solutions? does the new SpotX has the same issue? Thanks Hendrik

Hi iain, I did it in my M20K. The windshield price is minor compared to labor. I stayed as the sam thickness I had in but went up on UV protection. The estimate of the shop were 30 hours. 10 hours seems a bit optimistic. I asked several shops and got roughly the same answers (around 30 hours). If you go for a thicker model you need to add approximately 10 hours. I will get it back next week and I can tell you exactly how much. Hendrik

I'm close to get a second alternator in my M20K after the vacuum system was removed. Does anyone else have done it in a M20K already? What is a good solution for the switch of the second alternator? It needs to be close to the primary alternator switch to handle it with one hand. Is a splittet Klickson rocker switch a good solution? Thanks Hendrik

EDM 900 and Monroy fuel tank extensions

Hi, does anyone has an EDM 900 with a Monroy fuel tank extension? How is the setup for the fuel tanks? Since only the inner (main) tanks have 4 sensors it only make sense to set the fuel indicators to 72 Gal usable fuel (M20K) in total. The EDM 900 has a two tank configuration. If you top of all tanks than the usable fuel is 101 gal (M20K with speed breaks). Is there the same logic as in the EDM 730/830 to set the fuel quantity to 72 or 101 after refuelling? I think the used the "to the taps" option for this configuration in the EDM. I assume its that way but just like to see if somebody has real world experience. Thanks Hendrik

IMG_3152.MOV Hi David, I had the same. For me it was looking like that (see video). Longer story short only a servo overhaul was fixing it. There was quite some experimenting around that had only cost me time and money. I sent the servos finally to Redbird for the overhaul. This was not cheap but I haven't had any issues again since. Thanks Peter, if thats the way than its easy. Clarence, you are right. EASA would be scared, but I'm fine since I moved my M20K to an FAA registration. This was also necessary for the avionic upgrade and the second alternator. Hendrik

Hi, does anyone already have done a field approval for the Whelen ORION 650 E in an M20K? (the Whelen STC doesn't cover the M20K and also will not be enhanced in the foreseeable time) I'm just looking for some documentation to speed up the process. Thanks Hendrik

looks like you had a extremly similar thought process... Skin modification doesn't seems right to me. Ideal would be a plug inlet for the ground power port that contains the Batteryminder plug and the fuse. You could leave it in for daily operations and just pull it out if you need to use the ground power. The small door in the skin would still work. There is not a lot of space but maybe it could work. This would also work for quite some aircrafts..... I know I'm dreaming. Hendrik

I'm doing an avionic upgrade at my M20K presently and have all of the plastic out. I need to fix one of the rear seat armrest's. Any good advice how to tackle that? Thanks Hendrik
