I had a leak on both seals at the wing root and the smell was there the moment I opened the door.  In fact when in flight the smell either dissapeared or I got used to it.  This is how the wing root looked from the inside when I removed the side panels, obviously it had been there a long time. Lasar carries the rubber seals which I changed myself.  No more smell.  Below pictures before and after.

I had a similiar smell that was only present when landing.  It was the outboard fuel sender gasket, not the inboard.  Sounds strange, but the only time the fuel smell would make into the copit was durring landing. The smell was very obvious when landing.

I concur with Jim's assessment.  Dropping the gear pressurizes some of those compartments in the forward  wing area and pushes the odor into the cabin.  You should probably pull the interior panels as well and do a real detailed inspection of the entire fuel tank areas to see if you have other areas leaking.

Depending where you are in Canada, you should strongly consider going to Willmar, MN for full tank rehab with Weep No More LLC if it is time to re-do the whole thing.  I took my '77 J there in 2008 and it was worth the effort and expense.

Per all the kudos, we know Wilmar is excellent.  Depending on where you are located in Canada and should you need tank service, I would also highly recommend Advanced Aircraft Services in Troutdale, OR [Portland, OR]

We had the E model completely re-sealed and a spot leak on the R performed by Greg and Ed at Advanced.  First class all the way
