Great site!   Iam in the process of recieving a 1979 m20j , Moving up from my cherokee 140 ! I was wondering about the interior heating on this model, having come from the cherokee which had a great heater, what is the compareable diffrence? In vermont it gets pretty chilly and never flown in or had a chance to fly in a 201 i was curious how good it is. Really excited about the plane! Theres not many mooneys around vermont and when it arrives i will no doubt be ready to get out and learn what this bird has got, Thank you!

Hello,
I went from a Cherokee 140 (great planes) to a 1978 M20J (the best plane! :)....heater is great...mine will roast you right out if you let it. I flew the it from IL through NE, WY, CO and on up to Seattle in the dead of winter and was plenty warm the entire time...too warm sometimes...

Good luck, you will not look back...!

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the heat output.  One thing I've noticed, though, is that the heat will not be very strong during takeoff/climb with the cowl flaps open.  As soon as you level off and close the cowl flaps, though, it will heat up nicely.  For cold weather flying, you might consider "pre-heating" the cabin with a portable electric unit while pre-flight if you have electricity in your hangar/tie-down.  That should make it more comfortable until you get to cruise.

Enjoy!  You made a great decision.

Jim, I waffled between blue and maroon for quite a while, but settled on what I got (obviously).  fantom on this board is currently getting his J painted in FL with a blue scheme and I expect it will be outstanding as well.  Good luck with your paint job, and definitely post some pics when you get it back!

Heaters are great in Mooneys.  In fact, living the in the southeast, I usually disconnect the scat hose coming from the exhaust manifold during summer months because some heat is always leaking though the vents when connected.

Hope you enjoy the transition to Mooney!

I have the Powerflow exhaust on my '84 M20J and added a kit they sell to improve the heater. Even with this mod, the heater output in climb is very low. Once I'm level and cowl flaps closed, it is plenty hot.

As JimR stated above, until the cowl flaps are closed, you might be slightly cold. In cruise with the cowl flaps closed, you will roast if you turn on the heat full.  I usually mix the hot air with vent to get a nice mix.  One exception.....the rear seat passengers will be COLD the entire flight unless they have heavy blankets and a heavy jacket on and hat.  It's just terribly cold for my rear passengers and I can't warm them up no matter what I do with the heat lever upfront.  The Piper Warrior II I had was pretty much the same way.
