201er Posted December 18, 2024 Report Posted December 18, 2024 A whole lot of drone TFRs just sprung up! Are Iranian, Chinese, and US govt drones exempt?? Previously spotting zones or bullseyes to important infrastructure? 1 Quote
dkkim73 Posted December 20, 2024 Report Posted December 20, 2024 That's crazy. Does anyone closer to that area have any insights? National coverage not very helpful. Quote
Andy95W Posted December 20, 2024 Report Posted December 20, 2024 The “National Coverage” was simply because it was a slow news week and the 24 hour news outlets had to find something to fill the time (otherwise they couldn’t sell advertising.). Now with other stories to report on and cloudy skies, this is going to go away. It’ll be interesting to see what remains after the stories are gone. 2 Quote

National coverage not very helpful. So there are always going to be exceptions, like the guy from China and the idiots flying their drone off an island in the Boston harbor IN the KBOS airspace. But otherwise I still contend originally it was just some people flying their drones legally and a LOT of miss identification of helicopters and planes. But then, it became a thing, so everyone with a drone was joining in and flying at night. So now you have all these people all over the place flying their drones and a lot of them were by the power stations, which we can see are everywhere. So good opportunity for someone that does want to do harm to just mix in with the crowd. So the smart thing to do is to re-enforce that no drones are allowed in these area. It could turn out to be a real thing and they just were not telling us. But the most obvious reason is usually THE reason. Edited December 20, 2024 by PeteMc 1 Quote
201er Posted December 20, 2024 Author Report Posted December 20, 2024 If that wasn’t enough, they piled on a boat load more. Does this look like “having things under control” and “nothing to worry about?” Quote

INA201 Posted December 31, 2024 Report Posted December 31, 2024 Maybe a dumb question. Are the typical commercially purchased drones automatically disabled when flying in a TFR for drone activity? Quote

Are the typical commercially purchased drones automatically disabled when flying in a TFR for drone activity? I keep wanting to get more into drones, but just haven't taken the leap yet. So a real drone operator my correct/dispute what I'm about to say... Yes, there is Geofencing that will keep drones that are PARTICIPATING in the program out of areas that have been fenced off. But I do not think all commercial drones partake and I'm sure a huge number of personal drones do not. One example would be the two guys that were arrested on an island in the Boston Harbor (looking for a 3rd guy last I heard). I would think the Boston Class B is Geofenced off, but they were able to fly their drone there. I think it was also just a personal drone, nothing big or unique. Here's more info I found when looking up Geofencing: https://umilesgroup.com/en/geofencing-in-drones-how-does-it-work-and-what-is-it-for/ AND.... I haven't heard much about the drones lately. Has the news just moved on, or have there not really been that many sittings lately? And I'll go with there aren't that many any more... Actually I doubt there ever were that many, it was just everybody looking and reporting the same drones that were always around AND!!!!... Paraphrasing someone I read in some online group.... Now that they're all done taking pictures of all the pretty Christmas lights, everyone has put their drones away until the spring. (Then we'll probably all hear the reports again! ) Edited December 31, 2024 by PeteMc Quote
