Overhaul - what happens to the replaced parts?

As part of my overhaul, the cylinders, magnetos and starter will be replaced. Should I expect the old parts to be returned to me for future use if needed? If so, do I specifically need to ask for this to happen or is that the ordinary course?

Just got my engine overhauled. I didn't get any parts back.

Those kind of parts are often sent back as cores.  If you want the old stuff, ask the shop what they plan to do with them.  I’m sure they’ll be happy to let you have them if they are going to wind up in the trash.

Thanks. Definitely don't want them back if they are unusable. If the quote for an overhaul contemplates that the shop will get some value from these parts, that's fine; just didn't know if that is how it works.

I send them back with the propeller.

If I replace a part, you will get the scrap parts back.

I don't think you get any core value on cylinders.  But I am not sure for all engines. When I did my top overhaul I did get mine back. But I also notice that there are a lot of old cylinders laying around the shop!

For props there's no "core" exchange of anything, though, correct?

Actually Yes, but not will GA aircraft props.

I have some sets of Exchange props for Metroliner, King Air 200 and King Air 300/350 that really minimizes downtime for some Part:135 operators I work for.

GA props are tough to Core because a fella may take your exchange then have to turn around and buy brand new blades for the Core to make it whole agin, and with programs like Hartzell has with TopProp it literally costs more for those two blades than a New TopProp STC.

I have a crank from an IO360A1A left over from my overhaul.  The cylinders and mags were exchanged.  Crank is red tagged due to corrosion on the prop flange not usable in certified but maybe someone else might want one.

I used to have one of those. It was sitting in the corner of the hangar rusting. One day a home builder came by and gave me $1500 for it.

Mine is in the garage with corrosion X on it.  Well I probably need to reapply.
