James McDiarmid Posted February 13, 2023 Report Posted February 13, 2023 Hi all, I’m considering installing a Garmin GTS800 in my M20TN. I’m going to be basing the aircraft in Europe where TIS/ADS-B traffic is not available. Is it possible to do this installation as a retrofit or is it factory only? Has anyone else done this? Thanks! It is possible - just make sure that it’s s shop that really understands Garmin G1000 programming. Your G1000 will have to be configured to accept it. 1 Quote

A Mooney mate of mine who also owns a M20TN had an Avidyne TAS 6XX traffic system retrofit installed soon after purchasing the aircraft new, so I can’t see a problem if you want to install the Garmin GTS 800 system as a retrofit. 1 Quote

Garmin. In fact I would only let a Garmin dealer do this - they will have full access to all of that and if they run into any glitches they will have Garmin's support. I understand you're in Europe but if by chance you already have a GTX-345R transponder, I believe that the GTS-800 traffic will feed traffic into the GTX345R and the 345R will sort it out. Quote
mooney_flyer Posted February 16, 2023 Report Posted February 16, 2023 Hi James, I'm based in Europe, Germany to be precise, own a M20K 231 and recently added a GTS800. First of all I can only encourage you to install a traffic system. The installation in my Mooney was no problem but I highly recommend to let a very capable avionics shop do it. It's not just about programming, it's also about positioning the antennas relative to other antennas. In my opinion good HF knowledge is required. Depending on where exactly you'll be you might want to consider adding a FLARM capable device. The Alps, Germany, Austria, France: in all these countries you'll find many gliders in summer time and not half of them carry transponders (or simply don't switch them on). There are even microlights that don't have a transponder but a flarm. I personally can recommend an AirAvionics AT-1 (which may or may not be connectable to the G1000, but they offer a separate small display for it, ATD57). The device, the display and the installation are peanuts compared to the GTS 800. 1 Quote

Thanks for the tip re: FLARM…, I’ll look into it!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
