jetdriven Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 I was over at the "red board" and was reading that planes certified under CAR 3 do not require a burn certificate, like those certified under Part 23. Now my confusion comes from the J's TCDS which says: CAR 3, FAR 23 (so which is it)? Do I need a cert if I cover a few of the small side trim pieces with this: http://store.carbonfibergear.com/3m-di-noc-carbon-fiber-vinyl Quote
richardheitzman Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Yes, you need to source your interior parts from suppliers that comply with Part 23. I would suggest you work with a good aircraft interior shop to let them know what you are looking for. It is for your own safety. Quote
HopePilot Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 If you then use a different color of the same material, so you have to burn cert it again? Also, what is an inexpensive place to have it done? Quote
M20F-1968 Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Look online for Scandia - they sell interior fabrics, insulation. They can do burn certs. John Breda Quote
John Pleisse Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 We had a MSC that worked with a guy locally (a hot rod guy) who did everyone's interiors. Great guy, quality work. As time went on, the MSC allowed this upholsterer more freedom and less oversight. Interiors started going in everywhere without sign offs and one day, "Jerry" just picked-up and moved to Florida. The MSC would not remedy log entries once he was gone. They were astoundingly beautiful interiors that went in for $3500 (cloth). My first annual at another MSC some years later, the first question was, "where's your paperwork on the interior". We ended up excuvating materials- seat back pouches, etc. to send out for burn testing. Turns out, they need a fair amount of material to do it. Given the low cost buy-in initially, the interior not holding up that great after only a few years and there not being enough ample materials to burn test....I shit-canned it and chalked it up as another lesson learned. The rub is, I am sure the materials were cert'ed and "Jerry" had taken the high road.....there was just no paper work Call Airtex in Trenton, NJ. It is a 2nd generation, family run business that has done nothing but avaiation interiors for 60 years. The principal and founder's son, Dodd Stretch (I know....an interior guy with the last name "Stretch") is highly competant. They sell materials, do partials, fabricate plastic, etc. All remotely if you wish. They have all cloth and materials ready to cut. They are reasonably priced, fair and perfect for remote do-it-yourselfers. http://www.airtexinteriors.com/index.php Quote
Lionudakis Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 I have used Accufleet in houston, they did several a few years ago for around 80 dollars, It wasn't much. Quote
tony Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Byron, it seems your J model is both. My F model is just CAR 3. The TC for a J defines the cert basis as: Model M20J CAR 3, effective November 1, 1949, as amended to May 18, 1954, with paragraph 3.74 of Amendment 3-13 dated August 25, 1955; with paragraphs 3.109, 3.112., 3.115, 3.118, and 3.120 of CAR 3 effective May 15, 1956, as amended to October 1, 1959. In lieu of corresponding CAR 3 paragraphs, where applicable - FAR 23, effective February 1, 1965; paragraph 23.29 as amended to March 1, 1978, paragraphs 23.45 through 23.77 as amended to February 17,1987, paragraphs 23.1441 through 23.1449, as amended to June 17, 1970; FAR 36, effective September 20, 1976. N601RX Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 You can send a 1'x1' piece to a lab and they will provide you the cert. A couple of years ago it cost $40. http://skandiainc.com/ I've never saw the point of the burn cert for 2 and 4 seat planes. If the fire ever reaches the seats, Its probably to late for anyone inside. Quote
