WPrince Posted May 17, 2022 Report Posted May 17, 2022 Hey all, I know the topic has been beat to death over engine monitors but I have decided to go with a JPI 900 so I can get rid of the engine instruments. Been getting prices for installation and its all over the place. Branching out to look nationwide for the best JPI installer. Been getting 40-60hrs+ quotes from local shops but I don't want to pay them to learn the install but find the guys that know this the best. Any recommendations for shops would be appreciated! I do have an AP buddy that would oversee an install myself but sounds like I maybe biting over more than I can chew. Quote
Guest Posted May 17, 2022 Report Posted May 17, 2022 Do you want it installed of just thrown in? Doing it right is skill and craftsmanship, there are plenty of hack artists out there if that’s what you want. I’m importing a turbo Arrow with an EDM 930 installed by the A&P owner, it’s a bit of a mess. Take it to someone who cares. Clarence Quote
KSMooniac Posted May 17, 2022 Report Posted May 17, 2022 I agree with Clarence, but will add that if you do care and are used to working on your plane, then installing one under supervision is a good sweat equity project. None of it is technically difficult, just tedious. You'll have to plan where your new sensors go, get custom hoses made for them, route everything in a tidy fashion and support in an appropriate fashion. I probably spent 60-70 hours on mine, but I'm slow. It's worth it. Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk Quote
PT20J Posted May 17, 2022 Report Posted May 17, 2022 If you have a competent shop near you, I'd go with them. It's not rocket science but it is a lot of work routing all the wiring properly. You will be better served in my experience if the shop that maintains it is the one that installed it: If there are issues, any finger pointing involves a mirror. Quote
S.C. Posted May 18, 2022 Report Posted May 18, 2022 My shop allowed me to remove the old instruments. It was great sweat equity for me and helped cut down on the shop hours. They installed the EDM and certified. It was a good balance. I agree with PT20J once the install begins best to leave it to the professionals then there are no mirrors involved. 1 Quote
carusoam Posted May 18, 2022 Report Posted May 18, 2022 Hmmmm…. Wonder if this topic is covered in the engine monitor section… What a great place to have this discussion… Since it probably isn’t specific to any particular Mooney model… -a- Quote
Marc GER Posted May 23, 2022 Report Posted May 23, 2022 I have an JPI 930 installed in my F model. Installation incl. new panel and throwing out the old gauges took about 60 hours. So indeed, 40-60 hrs sounds close. Quote
