Hi everyone!

I'm researching GPSS setups with an existing STEC-30. My research so far has led to either a G5/GI-275 HSI with autopilot interface or a ST-901 being required to provide GPSS info from the navigator to the STEC. However, I was looking at the GTN650xi spec page and noticed that it lists "autopilot compatibility" as a feature, and the Aircraft Spruce page (https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/ngar650.php) shows STEC-30 in the list of compatible autopilots. Does this mean that the 650xi could drive a STEC-30 directly from the GPS or is a G5/GI-275 still needed in the middle? If so, is this a "new" feature for the GTN-650xi vs the old 650? Other than that it seems like the main differences are a faster processor and nicer screen, not much else different?

Thanks!

The Garmin page for the old 650 has the same STEC "supported" info as the 650Xi. From that it seems like the 650/650Xi are designed about the same way.

That said, ask your avionics installer. I've learned that the gotchas around avionics compatibility are endless. Even different part numbers (revisions) of the same model sometimes have different capabilities and incompatibilities.

You still need a gpss device.  It turns the gps nav data into heading data that your stec can “understand”.  So the G5 (or gi-275) has built in gpss.  You can use them as a hsi to steer off your heading bug or use gpss to use the gps nav guidance (like entering holding).  Without a gpss device, I don’t know any way to directly hook up your gps to the stec.

Ben,

Expect the GPSS data to come from a box somewhere...

Lately,  the newest version of cockpit displays have taken the responsibility of doing the calculations...

+1 for getting all the details of what box does what...

Make no assumptions when it comes to Revision numbers...

See if Mr. @Baker Avionics is around... he has some great insight on integration of avionics...

PP thoughts only...

Best regards,

If you don’t go  the G5 / GI275 route then the  Stec 901  system will work between your box and the Stec 30 to achieve GPSS
I have a 901 I recently pulled out of my plane if you need one.
