jlunseth Posted October 28, 2020 Report Posted October 28, 2020 The latest Aviation Consumer says that there is an AD out making these two EFIS units VFR only. Both were sold as being substitutes for the King attitude/flight director instruments (i.e. KI-256) that drive the KAP/KFC autopilots. The are VFR only even as a backup. I remember reading posts about Aspen units that ran into a similar problem. The does not leave much, the Garmin units I guess, hope they don’t get hit also because I am about to install one as an AI driving the KFC200. I did a search on KI300 and did not see a prior post. Hope this is not repetitive. Quote
MIm20c Posted October 28, 2020 Report Posted October 28, 2020 There is a 6 page thread about it over on BT. Sad but not totally surprising. I have one sitting on my desk right now that I unfortunately upgraded to the A version...big mistake. Oh well, I’ll wait it out and see if Dennis can fix the problem or if his company goes under. carusoam Posted October 28, 2020 Report Posted October 28, 2020 JL, This is an old, but important, issue... The BK business of buying products from other companies have lead them both down the same rabbit hole... So it is one device with two different names... It is unable to show proper attitude... all the time... A really dangerous device for IMC... PP thoughts only, not an instrument tech... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
jlunseth Posted October 29, 2020 Author Report Posted October 29, 2020 I know there have been issues with the 300 and we have discussed them. This pretty much makes it official, very official. My concern, given the issues Aspen has also had, is that the whole concept is buggy. So far Garmin is immune, expensive but immune. Hope the virus does not mutate. Quote
pkellercfii Posted October 29, 2020 Report Posted October 29, 2020 The Aspen AD only applies to Aspen MAX 2000 and higher units which do not have independent ASI/altimeter and AI backup AND have not been upgraded to newer software which was released last March. As an owner on Aspen MAX 2000 system I feel that it pretty much just mandates the obvious—upgrade your software, which is available, or limit the units to day/VFR only. —Paul 2 Quote
carusoam Posted October 29, 2020 Report Posted October 29, 2020 Aspen had the brief software challenge... Fixed by an update... shutting down in flight... The Sandia/BK device seems to be a hardware issue... with no update on the horizon... Just to be sure... there is no perfect hardware/software company... even big G has difficulties... they just haven’t been Disastrous or long lasting... recently there was some reports of communication challenges between Garmin displays and their sources...
