rbridges Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 a local shop quoted me $2500 to install a GPSS for my STEC AP and Garmin 430. Is that a fair price?
jlunseth Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 Yes, its in the ballpark. Mine was about 3,200 as I recall, but it is an Icarus SAM and has many features beyond GPSS.
ToddDPT Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 I know you may not want to do this, but the Aspen PFD has built-in GPSS. I know it would be an extra expense, but it may be something to consider.
Bennett Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 I, too, have an Icarus, SAM coupled to a Garmin GTN 750 and a KAP150 autopilot. It does a great job tracking a flight plan, and as jlunseth remarks. it has many, many useful features. My only complaint is that I personally find it a bit hard to read in bright sunlight in the position where I chose to have it mounted. I recommend that if you go that route, that you place it (the idicator head) as high as possible, and in your direct sight line. I make up for this a bit by using the voice features to annuciate when it is engaged/unengaged. A remarkable unit, and a great adjunct to complex flight plans.

KSMooniac Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 That should be in the ballpark. I think the module is $1500-$2000, and the installation isn't trivial, especially on a Mooney with a cramped panel/floor well.
flight2000 Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 Right off my invoice from July: STEC GPSS Module: $1,483.25 Labor: 4 hours @ $80 Total: $1,803.25 Brian

jlunseth Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 I looked up the cost of the Icarus SAM. It was $4,600 installed and hooked to the AP. The work was done in spring 2010.
201guy Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 The usual going price is about $1800. I would ask why the price appears to be a little bit high. The labor usually is about 3-4 hours.
rbridges Posted September 25, 2011 Author Report Posted September 25, 2011 The guy who owns the avionics shop actually came to my airport and I spoke with him. He said he could install an Icarus SAM unit for $500 in my mooney. I may go that route if I can get a decent price on the unit.
jlunseth Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 I would be a little wary of that price. That might cover the cost of wiring the Icarus between the GPS and the AP, but one of the features of the Icarus is its many configurable alarm annunciations. To do that, there is quite alot to wire up.
