many years ago I flew up from Tulsa to Ohio in a Cherokee 180 to get a freshly purchased M20E.  We flew back together in formation, around 120 knots. Landing in St. Louis and also in Tulsa, the Mooney took half the gas. Same CID engine. Half the gas. I ran it at 15" and 2400 RPM, it was barely enough to keep the heater warm.

I used to give rides on Airport Day with several 172z and a Cherokee 180. I'd pull back to less than 20" / 2300  and keep reducing throttle to not run over them (16"? 17"?). It worked well when I paid close attention to power settings the first flight or two, then used it the rest of the day.

They are the same engine, yes?

Could be an O-320 of 140/150 HP with fixed gear and fixed pitch propeller.
