After checking all the Mooney Mod sources on the net for a 201 windshield for my 64C, I'm now considering the 1 piece install instead.  Does anyone have snapshots of how it looks and your experience with the install and any noticable sound level decreases, etc.

I have the SWTA mod and like it very well.  About the only significant extra parts that I see are a fiberglass strip across the bottom front and a vacumn molded covering for the inside tubes.  I understand that a standard 201 replacement windshield can be trimmed as a replacement.  I suggest you call around to the salvage jobs for the two strips and a windshield to use as a pattern, and  bonefied STC paperwork with instructions.  I have had little problem with access through the two triangular ports in front of the Windshield.  Black goop seal as before.   To change the vacumn garter easily you either need small hands or need to just loosen the regulator from the firwall (simple).  The hydraulic reservoir is as accessable as before.  One caveat, wether purchased as a new mode or pieced together, try to work with someone who has done this mod before.  Some metal shrinkage is needed across the top of the windshield and this can look pretty rough if done by a first timer.

I too have done an extensive search for a 201 Mod for my '74F.  What I have found is there are no kits available from anyone.  Lasar does not have the cowl deck and will not get any new ones in as long as Mooney is not making parts.  SWTA does not have any and will no get any more in due to costs.  I think as our planes get older we are going to see less and less mods available for them.  If you look at my gallery I have a one peice windshield on mine.  Looks much better than the 2 piece.  I was also told by a MSC in Texas that the 201 while it looks good is not really worth the cost.  There is not a huge speed increase...maybe 2-3 knots....the way he put it was take the 6-7K and invest in the panel.  I also looked into trying to get a field approval for a 201 install and have been told by numerous people that the FAA is very reluctlant giving them out and one A&P IA said they are talking about doing away with them all together in the coming years.

I have heard that the stock 1 piece windshield as found on the 70s era C,E,F,G is more subject to vibration and noise... Can anyone who has done the conversion ring in?

So there may be some hope.....with the SWTA mod how hard is it to replace the windshield?  Say you take a bird or something like that?

Looks like Great Lakes Aero has 201 windshields, will this work with the SWTA STC?

Will SWTA sell the STC without the windshield?

Coul this be an option.

I don't want to discourage any of you, but I spoke with Russell a few weeks ago and I believe he said the minimun number would be significantly north of 12.  I'll call him again Tuesday and discuss the possibility of us pre-purchasing and the number required before he would be willing to do so.

I have the one piece , and it works fine , and is not to hard to install...  I was thinking of upgrading to a j model , but it seems that parts are not going to be available too much longer....  Has anyone considered calling Lopresti??? I believe they made the original parts when they designed the J model upgrades...

Thats a good idea....I might and try giving him a call tomorrow.  Who knows maybe we will be in luck....not holding my breath though.  If I find out anything I will post what I find out.

Okay, I talked to SWTA first and Russell confirmed that the supplier requires that they purchase a pallet of the material and would not be practical to start up and try to sell these kind of numbers.  I then talked to Lopresti and they have the full cowl mod but not just the WS mod.  I talked to Walt there about the option of obtaining a 201 windshield from AP Aero and finding the trim pieces and doing the mod that way.  I guess the question is if this is really doable without a field approval from the FAA and if it can look as good as the kits.  Could you find a salvaged J and get what you need?  Don

I have heard that the LASAR 201 windshield mod is not available now either, but has anyone approached them with regards to using a factory replacement 201 winshield with their mod? I suspect in both the case of SWTA and LASAR, the answer is no mostly because of the oppressing, ever present government regulation of their STCs and legal liability, not because of any technical reasons.

I am sooooo glad I already have the mod. I seriously looked at a number of planes before this one that I had factored in a 201 windshield conversion. At the time I had no idea that this mod would be gone for good. I consider myself lucky on that one! I have no idea what will happen should I decide to change the windshield now though. Mine does have a big blemmish on it where somebody in the past got some solvent on it and it melted. I also plan to change all my green glass to the smoked ND type when I repaint someday. Hope I can.
