mooneygirl Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Pilot Safely Belly Lands at Lakeland Linder After Landing Gear Malfunctions THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: Monday, March 28, 2011 at 10:10 a.m. Last Modified: Monday, March 28, 2011 at 10:10 a.m. LAKELAND | A small plane crash landed safely Saturday at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport after its landing gear failed to go down, according to a Lakeland Police Department release. The pilot, John M. Corneal, 61, of St. Petersburg, set his 2005 single-engine Mooney down on its belly about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the release. No one was injured. After it stopped on the runway, the plane was lifted with cable straps and the landing gear lowered, the release said, and there appeared to be moderate damage to the bottom of the airplane and to the prop. The investigation has been turned over to Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board. Quote
GeneS Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 I know John. It's an Ovation 2 upgraded to a 3 with upgraded G1000. A fully-farkled Mooney with all the boxes checked. He's a big supporter of Bahamas Habitat and made a bunch of trips to Haiti after the quake. Glad he's ok. Great guy. GeneS Quote
eaglebkh Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 Even though the pilot was probably aware of the situation and in full control of the airplane at all times, the media still uses the term "crash landing." Sometimes, news stories just need to be boring - for a reason... The Wright Flyer didn't have wheels - does that mean the first flight ended in a "crash landing?" Quote
John Pleisse Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 Bad media for GA..........just drop it in an e-mail. I am in the media biz and send him this stuff all the time. He puts in calls and keeps 'em honest. CHRIS.DANCY@AOPA.ORG Quote
