I use it for pre-flight/start/run-up. I then switch to the flow of BCGUMPS for each phase of flight until landing. I keep the checklist handy and turned to the emergency section, just in case. The panel checklist would work in a pinch but it is too hard to see IMHO... I was taught LCB GUMPS when I took my private in Warriors, the Skyhawks, and it has pleasantly surprised me at how versatile it is. The GUMPS part is the same for every aircraft, except some steps are just not there for a given plane, like "Undercarriage" in a fixed gear or Props in a fixed prop. I do them anyway, just to make the routine is the same every time. In my 231, LCB is Landing Light, Cowl Flaps, Boost Pumps. I fly out of a towered field, and they get on anyone who does not have their landing lights or strobes on. In the Warrior the C was carb heat, in the Mooney it is Cowl Flaps, which should be closed. In the Warrior, Boost Pumps were to be on, in the Mooney I check that they are off. The acronym has worked for every aircraft I have flown. Edited April 30, 2017 by jlunseth 1 Quote
