Wildhorsesracing Posted August 30, 2016 Report Posted August 30, 2016 I am flying my Mooney down to Triple Tree next week, anyone else going? http://www.tripletreeaerodrome.com/triple-tree-fly-in.php Quote
Jeff_S Posted August 30, 2016 Report Posted August 30, 2016 Give us a PIREP on the runway and suitability for a long-body. I've always felt that would be one turf strip I'd be willing to risk with the Ovation. No problem with a mid- or short-body, but the consequences of one poorly placed pothole are pretty extreme with our heavy front ends. (A buddy asked me if I miss the J, and most of the time I don't, except thinking about Triple Tree, Moontown, some other grass strips I haven't gotten the courage to go back to!) Quote
Hank Posted August 30, 2016 Report Posted August 30, 2016 Ooh, ooh! I wanna go!! It's not too far . . . Quote
Wildhorsesracing Posted August 30, 2016 Author Report Posted August 30, 2016 I understand that it is one of the flattest, nicest, grass strips around. I had the same concerns with my 'C and everyone tells me it's smoother than many asphalt runways around here. Quote
BDPetersen Posted August 30, 2016 Report Posted August 30, 2016 Sounds like way too much fun. After years of flying out of farm strips I'm sorry to see so much aversion to grass. Any landing should be respectful enough of the nose gear to insure good results whatever the surface. Personally, with the pump down flaps in the "C", I use the technique of selecting flaps up in the flare and enough back pressure on the elevator on rollout to keep the nose wheel light. If I had flaps that could be confused for the gear switch, I wouldn't temp fate. Quote
Jeff_S Posted August 30, 2016 Report Posted August 30, 2016 Yeah, not too worried about the nose gear. More worried about hitting a pothole and having my heavy front end dip enough for a prop strike. That's the real concern with the long bodies, as they are more prone to prop strikes with a longer fulcrum point from the nose gear to the prop. On the other hand, I know with the A/C in back my plane sits at a 5° nose-up attitude on the ground...I call it my Mooney tail dragger! That could be useful. Quote
Drew_Wagner Posted August 30, 2016 Report Posted August 30, 2016 I'm thinking about coming for a day. I've been there for the RC event in the past and the runway is immaculate and manicured. It's an amazing facility. You planning on staying the whole time or just coming for a day? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Wildhorsesracing Posted August 31, 2016 Author Report Posted August 31, 2016 I was going to look at the weather and go for a day or two. It is only a 45 min flight for me, so I can come home and sleep in my own bed. Quote
Htwjr Posted August 31, 2016 Report Posted August 31, 2016 I was there for the first time a couple of months ago at a breakfast club. The main volunteer gave my wife and I a tour and it was awesome. I highly recommend it and hope that I can make it back for the fly in. It's the Augusta National of general aviation. 1 Quote

DrBill Posted September 6, 2016 Report Posted September 6, 2016 Found bad fp gauge today so nogo for Sat. A&P removed gauge and I'm looking for a place to send it. Bill Quote
Wildhorsesracing Posted September 7, 2016 Author Report Posted September 7, 2016 No joy! I am flying down & back tomorrow with someone else but may go back down Thursday or Friday. Quote
wiguy Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 A friend is trying to fly down today from WI, as weather allows. It sounds like a very nice grass runway. 1 Quote
Wildhorsesracing Posted September 9, 2016 Author Report Posted September 9, 2016 I flew down wednesday with a friend in his Carbon SuperCub (see pic) and was amazed with the golf course like turf runway, it was simply gorgeous. They had everything from twins to J-3's flying in and we all lined up over the Walmart distribution center and landed accordingly. I wish I could go back today, I hear the food festival they have this evening is phenomenal. Quote
INA201 Posted September 11, 2016 Report Posted September 11, 2016 I drove in but will be flying next time. The runway is very nice with a few Mooneys as well. As of yesterday they had 600+ planes that had already flown in. Camping areas look very nicely laid out just might be a little warm. A Mooney J did a low pass which gave me quite a bit of inspiration and the feeling of home only to be followed by Triple Tree's own P-51. IMG_0349.mov Quote
Tony Armour Posted September 15, 2016 Report Posted September 15, 2016 Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I flew the Just Superstol over Saturday morning and came back Sunday. There were quite a few Mooney's. Every time I saw one landing or taking off.....just awesome. I'll probably never be without one as long as I can fly. There is a chili cooking there later this year ? I wouldn't hesitant to land mine there. 1 Quote
