For the original poster - my C is at LKR and I'm always looking for a reason to get some air under the wings.

Second (or third or whatever) recommendation for AGL Aviation at MRN.

Consider getting an insurance estimate before you get too far. With a fresh PPL ticket and no Instrument Rating, insurance might be quite pricey. Know before you buy :)

I bought my Mooney prior to getting my ticket and it was only $800 for full insurance.  So it wasn't too bad IMO.  now I have my IR and 300 hrs and I hope it goes down. :)

Thanks everyone for the information and time! I think I'm headed the right direction.... Now, does anyone have any recommendations for Mooney-experienced CFI's in the area? I'm thinking I'll be doing most of my flying out of Rock Hill (KUZA).

I'm also just about set to take my written for the instrument rating and would hope to have the same instructor lead me right into my IFR flight training.

Again, Larry Morris at JQF. Has a mooney, does IFR training in it, and is the local DPE. Sounds like a no brainer, if jqf is feasible for u.

Hi All, I'm in the market for my first plane (just finished my PPL, starting instrument) and considering a Mooney. A lot of the planes I'm looking at are pretty far away. With busy upcoming weekends and no mooney speed for me right now, I'd love to get a look at something closer.

Is there anyone near the Charlotte NC/SC area that has one I could take a look at? If at all possible and not a burden, I would love a quick ride sometime to make sure I'm comfortable/happy before running across the country to consider a purchase. Right now I'm looking at the mid-body models, M20F/M20J, but I'd love to see anyone's local plane. I do most of my flying out of JQF, any chance the 201 on the ramp belongs to someone on here?

On a separate thought, have many people purchased these planes without experience in them? What are your thoughts? I've done all my training in various older C-172s and have ridden/flown a family friend's Bonanza.

Thanks!

I flew in one for 15 minutes to try out the size.  Then I flew a couple hours in that same mooney to inspect the mooney I eventually bought.  I felt it sat lower (it does) and it gives a feeling of closeness since the window curves in quicker on the sides.  But the tradeoff in speed and fuel burn makes it worth it for me.

My only Mooney experience at purchase was about a 20-minute ride along where I got to play a little bit from the right side. My other 62 hours were in two Skyhawks. It was comfortable, much faster, looked good and the seller liked it, too. So now it's mine and I have years of Mooney time in my logbook. Even my wife likes it.  :D
