Air Mods in Robinsville, NJ is putting in a JPI 700 in my 77 201J. Should I interface the JPI fuel flow to the Garmin 430W? Any advantages to this, albeit, rudunancy since this will be in the JPI. It's about 4-5 hours extra labor to interface with the 430 since I'm missing some harness that is required. Any thoughts? Jim

FF and Fuel remaining with distance to the airport is worth knowing.  It can give you an alarm prior to running out.

Check the details on that to make sure.  Somebody didn't connect mine.  I still wonder why they didn't go the distance on such a nice error catcher.

I went about a year with my 430 and MVP-50 unlinked and then linked them.  I like it much better with the two linked.

Do it!  Nice feature that will allow display of MPG, fuel required to waypoint or destination, fuel remaining, range, etc.

I have a hard time believe it would take 5 hours additional, though.  There are only two wires that go from the JPI harness into the 430 harness.  The 430 connector needs to be opened, and the new wires with pins need to be inserted into the connector, then reassembly and re-plugging into the 430.  Next, maybe 10 minutes to change the settings in the 430 to accept the output.  This should be 1 hour of billable time IMO, especially if they're already "in there" installing the EDM.

Mine are connected also and I like the information available.  As Scott said its a transmitt and receive wire ran between the two.  Jpi has detailed directions and setup instructions on their website for all common gps's.

Absolutely, you get some great added functionality by integrating them. From the JPI you can configure it to give you remaining fuel or reserve at your GPS destination (but the default is the next GPS waypoint). From the GPS you get access to the fuel planning page with fuel flow and remaining fuel pre-populated. With both you'll have a much more accurate picture if you adequate reserve to make it to your destination or the range to divert to another destination if you need too. True those numbers or reserve will change in your descent but usually in your favor to add to your buffer. Anyway very worthwhile IMO.

I need to talk to the A/P directly to find out why 5 hours extra. I don't have the full story yet. What I was told was that the 430 that was installed in my plane (I just bought it in April)  is missing some harness and it will take 5 hours to install that. My A/P has been very reliable and honest so I need to talk to him directly. Thanks for you information, you make some great points. Jim

The minimum would be....  One wire being sent from each box...  FF, JPI, GPS

Add the research to determine the wires needed.  Updating the POH, WnB (nothing here).  Setting parameters in each box.

Finding a guy that is familiar with your exact boxes would help.  Or read up which wires you want installed and what parameters need to be changed would help.

The fun part of this project is it will take three hours or so for you to determine exactly what is needed. Getting and reading the manuals. And about five minutes to relay the details to the your favorite instrument guy.

My favorite local instrument shop is all Garmin and JPI.  They won't have to look up anything for the research part.

the other really cool thing is you learn about the settings in the JPI that can alter the display the way you would like to have it read.

Hey Jim..Hows the bird doing my nephew said you painted it and put a new interior in it ,, post a few pictures would love to see it... Also def do the interface I have it in this plane and makes fuel management a breeze showing reserves and fuel to waypoint miles per gallon ect.....

If it's the hookup you need you might consider leaving it unhooked and bringing it to your avionics shop for the interface.  They are much more comfortable with the dsub connectors on a 430 than your average A&P, on average.   I had a single run done between portable GPS and 430 and it was one hour labor for reference.

I agree that the Garmin interface with the engine monitor is a lovely thing with very useful information at a glance. My mechanic has just urged me to upgrade from the EDM730 to the 830, for the cost of the extra probes, as he is going to be in there anyway installing a repaired fuel flow gizmo. He raved about the increased utility with OAT, RPM, %hp, and other nice stuff to know. He promises a cleaner panel, too, with several redundant gauges gone. We shall see how wonderful it all is for the extra 1.3AMUs.

I am not sure about the 430, but to interface the 830 with my Aera 510, it is one blue wire from the garmin harness to #2 pin on the P4 DB plug  (FF plug) in the back of the EDM830 unit.

The EDM830 records flight locations data and calculates fuel estimated, mpg, etc based on GPS speed..   

I would think that the 430 would be no different... just one wire?
