Andy95W Posted January 25, 2016 Report Posted January 25, 2016 The starter contactor in your starter relay can build up a significant amount of carbon over the years, as well as erosion of the actual metal that transfers the current. This could explain the voltage drop as well as the fact that it is hit or miss. Sometimes it makes good contact, sometimes it doesn't. How old and rusty does your starter relay look? If you occasionally have charging issues also, then your master relay becomes a possible factor for the same reason. Quote
wishboneash Posted January 25, 2016 Report Posted January 25, 2016 Thanks for your input N1395W. I will get to it one of these days when I can get away from work. After I get the cowling off, hopefully some quick clues. Quote
NotarPilot Posted January 25, 2016 Author Report Posted January 25, 2016 I did a little research and if you own a Sky-tec starter they can rebuild it for you for about half the cost of buying a new one. Definitely a good CB option and the guy at the factory said they replace anything and everything that needs replacing for a flat fee of $225 for my particular 149-12LS model. Standard turn around time is about 1 day. I'm copying and pasting their current rates for anyone who has a Sky-tec starter. He said your starter is as good as new and will come with an 8130. I don't know, will double check the connections before next time I fly. Quote
NotarPilot Posted February 21, 2016 Author Report Posted February 21, 2016 I finally got to do a run up today on the plane with a freshly rebuilt starter. The prop turned over fast and immediately . I have no doubt the 18 year old starter was the culprit for a slightly weak cranking speed before and the starting problem. In fact, looking back now I also think I changed out my 2 year old Concorde battery prematurely last year. Thanks for all the great advice from everyone. Quote

Andy95W Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 An "8130" is a document that says the part is airworthy. It used to be a "yellow tag". Quote
