Houman Posted October 21, 2015 Report Share Posted October 21, 2015 Hi, Just installed my new CYA-100 AOA, and will be calibrating it soon during a flight and I was wondering what speed did you guys use for the green (upper) limit. In the instruction it says we can use either the Vy or Vx or any other speed, according to Rocket numbers, my Vy is 105 Knots and Vx is 71 knots, my stall speed is 61 Knots. After talking to Rip (the maker of this AOA), he tells me that my lower limit should be about 62 or 63, but higher limit is up to me, and I'm wondering what would be the consequence of my choice would be and how that influences the display. I was thinking of putting Vy as the upper limit and then I would imagine a Vx speed would be in the yellow section and Vso in red... I'm just looking for inputs of people that have configured an AOA and what do they like to put as speed and why and of course I will test these during my calibration flight ! Thanks ! Vx would be good for those short field ops where you are under a little extra pressure to get it right to clear the trees ahead. Vy is nice because we climb out most often at Vy and above. Since we use this device to identify the critical parts of the flight envelope, Vx is more important to our health than Vy. How does that sound? Note: I have not purchased an AOA, yet... I dont know the calibration for the CYA but for mine, the alpha systems, you calibrate it to actual stall while in slow flight at safe altitude. I mean 10 kts between top to bottom... I'm guessing that in this case, I want to be on the yellow (65 kts) passing the fence and then on the red just before touch down, right ??? I would play with different settings and fly with it a bit. I left the calibration button on mine to recalibrate if I ever wanted to change it. We decided to leave the button on the back of the plate where it is installed, so easly reprogrammable with the removal of 4 screws and access to the button. We decided to leave the button on the back of the plate where it is installed, so easly reprogrammable with the removal of 4 screws and access to the button. Here is the FAA approval letter. No comment about the programming switch. Only about how the vane can't be marked up. http://www.ackemma.com/Ack_Emma_Approval.pdf There is a comment in the instruction that states "should be removed", doesn't say "must be removed". Houman Posted October 22, 2015 Author Report Share Posted October 22, 2015 I miss stated, here is what Rip wrote on his email to me : "You can program the V speeds wherever you like, and there is no practical limit to the number of times you can do the programming. Part of the FAA certification process required that the programming button be removed after calibration, but between you and me, a lot of folks leave it installed in an out of the way location." I may put in a recalibration push button switch cover if this is going to be a problem. Best regards, -a- No. To enter program mode you have to hit the program button within 5 seconds on power on otherwise hitting the button should not have any effect. To reprogram the 1st step is to cycle the CB and hit button to enter program mode.
