Yep, nylon bushings would require bigger U bolts (cable clamps).. Going to 1/2 in dia nylon rod for the bushings then all bolts could be 1/2 in. since you need one  1/2 in for the center  support.

That would be a total of 5 (maybe 6) clamps.

Ok...my two cents for version 2.0

Instead of nylon bushings, how about Adel clamps?  Since they have a rubber on the inside of the clamp.

Another option - use nylon cable clamps. (I rebuilt my old Cherokee Six visor by replacing the worn nylon clamps)

I will get some pictures to show you what I mean. :-)

 

The only thing is, it wont be as sturdy since you don't need the metal plate over the visors. The visor itself is the friction point over the rod and clamp.

These are the nylon clamps I was talking about.

These clamp onto the rod. They have enough friction to hold the Cherokee visor in place. Just need to get the a little smaller than 1/4 inside diameter.

As much as I like to over build things.  Adel clamps would work.  Also buying a sheet of smoked of 1/4 Acrylic Sheet and cutting them out would reduced the need for a doubler.  If you went thin, then using another piece of acrylic for the doubler would work.  Of course I would fire up the milling machine for the center mount out of some 7075 alum.  Professional Plastics sells by the sheet.   Probably about $150 for a 4x8 sheet.  Cut then sand edges as smooth as you want.

I know it may cost more, but couldn't you use some kind of smoked plexiglass instead of aluminum?  I've had a few trips where the sun was square in the middle of the windshield.

Yes, there is a slight bend each side of the center bracket.

I know it may cost more, but couldn't you use some kind of smoked plexiglass instead of aluminum?  I've had a few trips where the sun was square in the middle of the windshield.

The visors are smoked Plexiglass and only the center bracket and the flat pieces holding the plexiglass to the rod are aluminum.

Ordered my plastic finally. The local shops would only deliver on 4x8 ft sheets at well over $100/sht.  I got enough for 3 pair from TAP plastics in California of all places for c $50 shipped.

The big sheets are a better deal if you want to spend that much.

I'll be posting pictures as I get the materials.

My plastic came today!  Now to cut a couple of visors and get the other parts at Home Depot.
