Is there any trick to this? There is clearly no room to pull the gov to the firewall and get it completely clear of the mounting posts. We ended up removing the accessory mount as well. PITA!!!! Is there some trick MSC's and good A&P's do to get it out? We thought of loosening the top lord mounts and allowing the top half of the engine to move forward about a quarter inch, but baffling etc was in the way. I understand pre J models have a circular firewall cover that gets unbolted for governor removal. To make matters worse, we have had to do it twice. We have reason to believe the prop overhauler did a strip and dip, because the governor leaked in the exact same place AFTER OH!!! PIREP on these geniuses to follow.

Please tell me there is an easier way to R&R the prop governor in early 201's without cracking your knuckles and stripping hex bolts.

Removal is a challenge.

Be sure that when you reinstall it you install the metal spacer and the two gaskets. It's required on the IO360A3B6 series engine in Mooney's and Cessna Cardinals.

It's a little easier to remove the top 2 bolts that hold the engine mount to the firewall than to remove the large engine mount bolts. The bottom 2 firewall bolts act as a hing and will allow the top of the engine to hinge out and down when supported.

Remove the air pump, oil filter and mag. You might get away without removing the mag, but it will be a lot easier. Remove the nuts from the governor and the governor mount (8 nuts). Break the gasket seal on both so the governor and the mount are loose. angle the governor up as much as you can, slide the mount from the engine, angle it up and the governor will come loose from the mount then the mount will come out. It will need to be installed in the same manor.

I know this is an old post, but I ran across it looking for hints on governor removal. This may help someone else. The governor removal turned out to be fairly easy. 1) Remove oil filter. 2) Remove governor cable linkage bolt. 3) Cut safety wire and remove the 3 drilled fillister head screws which attach the cable support bracket to the governor. 4) Remove the 4 governor nuts that hold it to the mounting pad, A short offset box end wrench works well for this.

This information is specific to the M20J with a Lycoming  IO360A3B6D

It seems like as good a post as any to extend the group knowledge of prop governors.

This arm at the rear of the governor on an M20J looks a little different to the IPC. The pin here that looks well worn doesn't appear to be in the IPC pic.

Any idea of the part number of this prop governor arm?

Many thanks.

I think that’s an Edo-Aire governor. The arm is part of the governor - not a Mooney part. If it were mine, I’d send the governor to West Coast Governor Service and get it repaired/overhauled.

Your spring is on all wrong. It is upside down. It should be pushing the arm against the high speed stop. You have it rigged to push it to low speed if your cable breaks. That is dangerous. The end of the spring that is on the arm post should go around the high speed stop pillar. And the end you have in the lock wire hole should go on the arm post.

Thanks all. I will pull it and replace/overhaul.

And thanks to the old posts above with directions on how to do so.

We are changing engine mounts at the same time so hopefully the two jobs can work in together. I remember there are some other posts on changing engine mounts.

Remove the engine WITH the engine mounting bracket.  That’s the key.
