A few hours after installation of my AOA, shortly after take-off, my 430 went black. I fiddled with it a bit and it wouldn't come back on. I switched to my #2 comm and my 696 for navigation. The rest of the flight was uneventful. Back in the hangar, I found the 430 was unlatched and would slide out. I re-seated it and used an allen wrench to retighten it. It seemed that the allen handle only turned about 90 degrees. Today I took it out for a test run. At one point, the unit seemed to be functioning, but the comm would not transmit or receive. I pushed on the inward on the left side and it started working again.

Any ideas about what is going on. Is the retainer a screw that should turn several threads totally engage, or perhaps a quarter-turn device.

Do I need to remove and clean the contacts either in the rack and/or the 430.

I can always get my avionics guru to look Monday, but I would like to know.

Using the allen wrench, with the unit out of the mounting tray, unscrew the latching mechanism all the way and as you do so, watch how the mechanism rotates and moves. Then observe it as you turn the allen wrench to the right.

Now take a look at the mounting tray where the latch engages. It isn't too hard to see how the latch engages the slot and then gently pulls the radio into the tray and seats all the connections at the back.

From what you describe, the contacts are probably just fine and do not need to be cleaned. The radio probably just needs to be re-seated into the mount and secured.

Unscrew the allen wrench all the way, but still loose (like 99.9% unscrewed). Then slide the radio back into the mount straight until you start to feel it touch the rear of the tray. Now start to rotate the allen wrench to the right. The latch should engage and pull the radio into the tray.

Don,

The guy in the hangar next to mine has that exact same thing happen. It turned out to be that his audio unit came unseated. You might want to make sure everything is seated and fastened tightly.

The back of your 430 tray had the com antenna connection. It broke free. Reseed the 430 in the tray, equally, with both hands on both sides, even wiggling it a bit. Then hold it firmly in place with one hand while you re-tighten the allen wrench screws. I actually had a simulator years ago that I plugged the 430 into at home. I would undo and carry home my 430 all the time. Re-installation required the finesse I described above.

It sounds like you have something interfering with the GPS unit being able to push all the way into the tray and the connectors in the back. First, with a light, look into the tray and make sure nothing is protruding or bent that interferes with putting the GPS in. When you push the unit in, look at the front panel, does it stick out further than the rest of the panel instruments? If so, it is not fully connected in the back.

The allen screw is not to designed to seat the GPS in the tray. The unit should be manually seated and connected, then the allen screw engages the clamp that HOLDS the unit in place.

If the Allen wrench only turned 90 degrees , it is bottomed out in the lock pawl.......With a little force and the 430 removed turn the allen wrench to the left (counterclockwise) and it will turn about 10 revolutions..... Then try to reinstall....
