Epiphyte Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 Ok. This may be a stupid question. What keeps the prop hub-to-crank from leaking oil? It's metal connected to metal, right? Seems like oil would make its way through. I had a teacher tell me once that, " there is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people asking stupid questions." Quote
MB65E Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 There is an oring in the inside lip of the propeller that mates with the crank flange. Commonly nicked during install if installed incorrectly. Hartzell will have some drawings online if you look for prop seal... Not to be confused with the crank seal.(aka nose seal) Best, Matt Quote
Epiphyte Posted October 28, 2013 Author Report Posted October 28, 2013 Thank you. That makes sense. I just remember seeing a prop off, at my mechanics shop. I quickly glanced at the hub and prop, then later on thought it was strange, but I probably didn't inspect it closely enough. Cheers Troy Quote
Cody Stallings Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 He was right, there is no stupied question. The 3317-228 Oring keeps it all sealed up.. You prob couldn't see it cause it was caked in all the grey crusty funk. Quote
Epiphyte Posted October 28, 2013 Author Report Posted October 28, 2013 That's true. Could have been covered in crud. I'll take a closer look next time. Quote
