  1. Ken -- most of the time, the STCs are written on full sized paper and won't fit in a logbook. You may want to ask the owner or seller if they have the supporting documentation for the mods. Mine were in a separate book until I changed mechanics years ago and they were all consolidated into a single binder. Also, some STCs are available as generics. Others are specific to an airframe or airplane.
  2. That is what I recalled as well. That is why I asked whether he had any STCs in his logs. All of the mods on my plane have the STC paperwork. I think DERs are less common but obviously another mechanism for approval.
  3. The mods that were done on my F had STC paperwork as well. Are you finding any of those?
  4. Love that color blue -- what's it called?
  5. I also think your fuel flow is a bit low for full throttle climb configuration. As for the factory CHT, if you have an internal calibration issue with the JPI, seeing if the factory is reading high as the JPI will confirm your JPI is reading correctly. I agree, it should be. I wouldn't worry about the accuracy of the factory CHT as much as if it is on the high side of the scale.
  6. A couple more questions. I am assuming you have a factory CHT, what is that reading? And you meant O-360, not an IO-360, correct?
  7. Something is not right. What are the EGTs reading? Have you tried a more shallow climb to see what impact that has? It could be a number of things from bad/missing baffles to mag timing to lean fuel mixture to a carb problem to who knows what else. For all cylinders to be all high, you need to start looking at common factors (carb, mags, etc).
  8. Anyone calculate the amount of power savings going full LED for exterior lights? I just had the Whelen landing light installed. Curious how much more is saved going all LED.
  9. You may be onto something. I think the Stratus 1 firmware update came after Stratus 2 came out. Wonder if there is a glitch in that update. From the graphical representation I have seen, the differences betwen composite and context display of weather (XM versus ADSB) was enough that some people felt things were missing.
  10. Bummer! I have the Lasar improved design as well. Thought that was supposed to be end of this problem. Thanks for sharing. What are they getting for them now?
  11. Hmmm....must be a design problem. Why else would they need to build in warnings for overheating. They must know something!
  12. Gary -- I think people are having a hard time understanding the limitations of this technology. Doing a fixed motion map of Wx while on a WiFi based data feed is a lot different that doing a moving motion map depiction of that same information in flight uploading from low bandwidth ASDB transmissions. As well, I would have expected better traffic from what is described in the letter, but keep in mind that he needs to pick up the traffic from the environment if he doesn't have ADSB out capabilities. Last year ForeFlight spoke about why they were not offering traffic at that time. It had a lot to do what people could realistically expect to see.
  13. My sentiments exactly Glenn. For my needs and wants, the plane has exceeded all of my expectations.
  14. Not required, but it might help tame the flames on my GTN 650...
  15. Probably because too much Aspen innovation would kill either Garmin or allsmiles... One thing for sure, I'm glad allsmiles is not my dentist. He is probably so irritated at me, he would pull all my teeth even though I was in for a cleaning (where's my teeth allsmiles?!)
  16. Thanks Rich. Since no one else chimed in on recent experiences, I was getting worried that I was indeed a Guinea Pig oink, oink.
  17. Let me pile on; another innovation, their PFD/MFD reversion also is now able to take over full autopilot control. In the past, during reversion, you lost AP control. Now you can throw a switch and have full GPSS and Nav control sent over to the AP from the MFD. a picture of the switch: With their new ADSB solution, you can purchase the CG50 interface and now do a WiFi connection from your portable ADSB receiver and display weather on your panel mounted Aspen products. http://www.aspenavionics.com/products/nextgen/cg50
  18. I'll take the bait. Aspen was the first to introduce full interfacing with existing aviation equipment by providing the ACU & ACU-2 options as part of their standard glass offering. Garmin responded with the GAD-43e product (oh, and it will cost you another $5k installed).
  19. You do what you need to do to get the maximum life out of the engine while not causing harm to your own life... If I feel uncomfortable with my engine, it is time...
  20. Although I agree with Allsmiles on many things, this is one area I don't. Garmin is the market leader and is acting liking a bully in the process. They are where BK was in the late 70s and 80s' - owned the market and charged for it. I was so irritated with BK back in the early 90s on how much they were gouging me to evaluate a KX-170B problem (not even repairing it), I took a chance on a Narco to replace it. I paid half of what BK wanted for a 155 and even though Narco is gone, the 12D+ soldiers on. If it died tomorrow, I feel I got my money's worth out of it. I am absolutely impressed with the versatility that Aspen has provided. Their open hierarchy made it possible for me to interface old with new and provided me a timeline that allowed me to upgrade future hardware on my timeline, terms and at a price point I could afford. If Aspen offered a WAAS GPS, I would have taken a chance on them.
  21. You have a pretty decent panel as is. I agree upgrading the transponder and MX would be next logical steps. You could also get good money for what you have and do a GTN or Avidyne upgrade with the Aspen. Do you have GPSS? You are at that stage where you need to "choose wisely". You could spend serious money and not get much more than you have now. Here is my setup (as of today): But who knows what tomorrow will bring?
  22. Before you jump off a bridge, have someone familiar with filiform and intergranular corrosion look at it. The picture is not a close-up and what you may have is nothing more than paint failing. The good news about Mooneys is all that green stuff is something you don't find on all airplanes and the zinc chromate paint helps ward off corrosion. I do agree you should have your airframe looked over if they do find corrosion and yes, it can be treated if caught early enough.
  23. Thanks for comment on the Vette! I do my best to keep it spotless. Heck, it even still has that new car smell inside. As for my tires, they're fine! Unlike some Vette owners I know, once I found out how much they cost to replace, I stayed away from smoking them! When I bought the Vette I looked pretty hard at the Mustang. You couldn't beat the value for the price.
  24. Surprisingly they are in the same price range as Goodyear run flats and the rest of them -- aka expensive. With the number of miles I am putting on my Vette each year, the originals will go quite a while...
  25. I use Stan's on my mountain bike and I forget the stuff in my road bike (both tubeless wheel sets). Both work, but do they leave a mess inside the rim. If you ever need to put a tube back in, it is a job cleaning it all out again. When you consider a road bike is using 120 psi and it can stop the leak, it is pretty impressive.
