Both my 750 and 796 need updating..curious to see what $ is? I've been waiting for my panel to get done..Hopefully cheaper Wonder if "Tennessee" talk is in the database. I've still got some Yankee in me so I can usually get computers to understand me after a few times repeating myself. My other half is 100% Tennessee. She had a heck of time with On-Star or Siri understanding Southern talk.. lol

I thought about springing for the cost or part of the cost of annual to use it while mine was down...great idea, BUT, the shop that does the annual is the one that is doing my work. I want mine done before they spend time on his annual.. lol. -Tom

Anyone have good source to look up rental aircraft. Mine is in the shop for a while..I"m having withdrawals from flying. I had thought I would rent my old Cherokee 140 from the guy I sold it to.. At the same field. The shop says it's out of annual and since the guy I sold it to never got his PP he has no real ambition to get it in for annual (it's only out by a few months, but out is out). Nothing else local in my area that I'm able to find. Anybody know of the best website or ideas on sourcing aircraft rentals. I'm in west TN (Dyersburg, TN). I'm sure there are places in Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville, but that's a pretty good distance. I've looked on the web some and can't seem to find any place near by. Anybody have good suggestions or ways to source a rental? The folks are headed to Destin, FL the end of the month. They are driving and will be there a week. I thought about renting something and flying down for a few days, but renting something for a few days would be crazy money. Not having much luck on locating rentals.. -Tom

Thanks guys..I think he has it sorted now. -Tom

Tim, check the back of the unit and make sure the harness is pushed in good. Mine went in the shop once and apparently they bumped the plug-in harness that plugs to the head unit on the dash..I was getting all kind of crazy reading. I looked under the dash and reseated it and worked fine. BTW...Your yokes will finally go out tomorrow. Took them a while, but finally out and ready to go -Tom

Kind of what I was thinking. I have the IPad with Flightstream 210 and also have a Aera 796 I use for weather..According to the shop the is no legal requirement since I have the battery back-up on the Aspens. Just thought I would see what the jury thought. Less is more, but I want to be legal and safe. -Tom

We love our Es..Great option. Speed, economy and fuel injected. Electric gear and flaps are a plus for me. Some prefer manual. Sports car with wings...............Good for two and dogs and luggage. Four adults can be done, but you want frequent stops. Overhaul time is a little easier on the wallet. -Tom

My shop has pretty well got my old gauges gutted out. All the vacuum gear has been removed. I went to pick up some of the old avionics they had removed. They asked if I have given thought to a back-up Artificial Horizon? I'm having the dual Aspens installed with the battery back-ups. They said they have had a few guys go with a separate back-up artificial horizon with it's own self contained battery (apparently good for about an hour in emergency). They are not swaying me either way. Just asking.. If for whatever reason the Aspens went dark I would have this as a back-up. I usually use IPad of sort with me so I would not totally be in the dark and of course it has AH. Just getting opinions of whether it is needed, cost est was about 2K +/-. The owner of the shop was not in today, only the AP, so as far as what manufacturer, model and exact cost I don't know yet. If I did go this route any particular manufacture or model over the other. Is it really needed? Constructive thoughts appreciated? -Tom

I've been using the Sporty's DVD course, countless hours watching different Youtube Instrument training and two Instrument ground school books (they are at my office right now..sneak study time in when I can therem don't recall the author or what company published them). Lately I've slacked some on my IFR training, but the Sporty's DVD course will be a start for you. I'm doing pretty good now..Usually, on multiple choice questions it now only takes me two wrong out of three to get it right..lol I thought as we got older we got wiser? I guess being wise and aptitude to learn are two separate traits Good luck!! -Tom

For us older farts it will be a pleasure not having to go every two years. If you maintain any level of good health it is more a feeling of just something I don't have to work into my schedule every two years and the worries of " what if ". My personal example is I get the "White Coat Syndrome". I am fairly healthy and try to exercise and eat sensible. However, even though I try to stay healthy and have never needed to go to a doctor or a hospital visit for anything other than requirements for job physicals, insurance physicals when I was younger and now my FAA exams. I will go occasionally for a spring time visit to a nurse practitioner for a spring allergy shot (not always necessary, but get one to just help the watery eyes and occasional sneeze feeling to help when everything is blooming or I mow..never happened when I lived on the coast, just since I've lived in the middle of farm country). I'm a creature of habit and don't like change or evasion of my private space. When I go for ANY physical I get very apprehensive. My blood pressure elevates, my pulse quickens etc. When I am at home and check BP and pulse everything is very normal. My other half is a Respiratory Therapist so I know the readings are accurate. I've even been known to bring a BP log with me for my FAA physicals to prove what my BP and pulse normally run. I always passed with my FAA doctor, but I always get nervious and think what if he is not happy with that BP and I'm over stressed that day and over the FAA limit on this particular visit? I'm always very close. My flying could end, have to sell my plane..OMG, the pressure!! Some will say, why not BP meds. To me BP pills are just a temporary relief and only fool the BP cuff. Why take a pill when my normal BP and pulse are very good. If I can I'd rather maintain it with exercise and diet..so far so good, except when that white coat comes in the office. I think I'm healthy and feel good. Put a white doctors coat and stethoscope on and watch out. It's also nice now knowing I have a choice of who I want to sign-off on off on it. I will probably continue to go to my current MD that has done my FAA physicals, but choices are good. It's good to know that of the several doctors that are friends of mine and were not FAA docs I now have the option to get the physical with someone I know. It wilI certainly make me feel less stressed, result BP and pulse closer to normal .I think the fear that some have expressed of some doctors not wanting to take on the liability of signing off has been over-concern. If all continues and my health maintains I figure only have to endure 11 more physicals if I am able to fly until I reach 100 yrs old. I can handle that!! Good job AOPA! Just my .02 and past experience.. -Tom -
Moved to Internet Auction. Still available to MS.

Okay..that narrows it down. The bottom is the type set-up the seller sent me, the block is what I had. So it's either or..not both.

Wow..Good stuff. I'll look through all of it and pass it on to him. Since we will not have PC some will not apply. I'll let him decipher what he needs. Chris, if you could still snap a picture of the mount area where it attaches to the bottom of the dash that would help a lot..I'll look back over all of this carefully and see if I can see any additional details. Thanks, -Tom

That would great!! Whatever is easier on your end. Check your PM regarding something else I need to check with you about.. -Tom

Everything is at the shop.I only opened the box to look at the yokes when they came in..Been in the closet waiting for the avionics work..My mechanic just opened it up this afternoon before heading home to take a look.. He was trying to get the old ones pulled out so I could ship them. I'm not sure what all was in the shipping box. I'm sure everything was there..He just called asking about the blocks. The yokes came off EBay, same guy EBay (Hugito1) Hugo, I think he is in the San Antonio area, I bought my seats from a few years back. I think a lot of his items come from Aero Comfort. I needed material for a headrest one time and Hector said he remembered doing my seats prior to me buying them from the EBay guy. My AP won't be back on it until Monday. If you get a chance take a pic or maybe somebody that has done the swap will chime in. Thanks,

Question for the experts on yoke swaps... We (my shop AP and my checkbook) are swapping yokes from the originals (1974-skinny) to the thicker 201 style. I purchased the Yokes, new shaft for J yokes and bushings from EBay vendor I've purchased from in the past. On the original shafts there is a rectangular mounting block/guide. Do the blocks need to be transferred to the new shafts, or do the new guides like in the bottom picture used in place of the original rectangular block guides. The question to the experts or those who have done the swap. Do these blocks stay on the OEM shafts or need to be transferred over to the new shaft, if so is there any special technique? I've contacted a few folks and I'm getting conflicting replies. Some say the blocks transfer to be used on the new shaft, other say the shaft secures using the new bushing/bearing mounted on the panel as pictured in the last picture? The last shaft picture is what I think it should look like and not use the blocks? Since I'm not at the shop I pulled the last picture off EBay showing a bearing/guide similar to what came with the new shafts. Blocks stay or go? anybody? The email I got from the guy I bought them from: The IPC for J Models shows the that you use either the control tube Guide Block for a certain range 24-0001 thru 24-0900 of serial numbers or the bearing guide assy like I sent for anything newer. Thoughts? I have a 73/74 E... I do have a AP doing all this..He was just trying to get them pulled out late today so I could get them sent to the buyer...He really has not had time to look over all the parts for the swap and we did not want to send out something we might need later on the new install. He thought I might check with the guy I bought them from regarding the blocks...I checked with him and I thought I would ask the real experts..MooneySpace Thanks in advance, -Tom

Hey MS, I went to the shop today to check on the carnage of my panel upgrade. I noticed they had the Accu-Trak pulled out as well as the valve and turn-coordinator. I'll be posting this up for sale within the next week. He didn't want me to take anything today, making sure he had everything removed that he needed. They will be removing the servos in the wings for the PC wing-leveler later. I have managed to stock-pile some extra good condition servos as spares in my hanger as well should you need them. This Accu-Trak was purchased from a forum member about 3-4 yrs ago and was sent back to Brittain for overhaul back then. It has been flying well over the past few years. Once I get it in my hands I'll post some pics and pricing. Just thought I would give heads up for those of you that might looking. I will also have the Brittain push/pull "Cut-Off Valve" that mounts on your panel to allow you to disable the PC system without the rubber-band technique.. Several other items to follow and post to follow as they are removed. I prefer not keeping a PM list of who's wanting it first and following up.. Other items worth mentioning coming up... Gauge Cluster, Tach, MF and audio panel, JPI 830 plus much more.. Here is a picture of the carnage.. -Tom

I'm back from vacation and ready to put this unit up for sale. I purchased this to keep in the plane. I have one in my hanger already. Decided to just use my regular tow bar for in the plane. These work great. The fellow I purchased this from said it was less than a year old. There were a few interested and have been notified. First come first serve. This is in excellent condition. Look close at the pictures. New and clean enough to put on my dining room table for pictures..lol Asking $1450..you save a few hundred bucks over a new one. Free shipping to lower 48. I'll post here a few days before it goes to the auction site. More pictures available. This is set up for Mooney. -Tom

After 15 hrs of flying and a couple thousand miles over the last week I won't tell you what my other half calls ours now (I will say my other half does not like flying at all). After flying six hours back home from vacation and us having to dodge clouds and running into some rain my other half was calling mine some names I never even thought of.. lol -Tom

I've been really been thinking about the install and looking at other installs. I won't reiterate all the upgrades, but thinking aloud and wondering if I should consider keeping the ASI, Altimeter and the VSI. Even though I'll have the Aspen Pro and Aspen MFD w/ battery back-up I'm really considering keeping these three? Thoughts, to repetitive or required? I don't think they are required with this new upgrades, but it's what I've been familiar with over the years and I notice many pilots keep these in the panel even after upgrades. I have the GTN750 w/ GDL88. I'll also have the JPI 930 so all the engine gauges will be replaced, just thinking aloud and looking for thoughts. I'm VFR been working toward my IFR not that this matters, but thought I would also include this info in the mix to consider. -Tom

Finally got all the goodies in at the avionics shop. 41M goes in the shop on the 11th ( a week from Monday). Going to be a different bird. Kind of like early Christmas for a big kid Going to be a long 3-4 week install process..I'll have Mooney withdrawals. -Tom

FS eBay: Sidewinder Powered Tow Bar for Mooney
TWinter replied to mcpilot's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
These work fantastic! If someone picks his up I'll be also posting one sometime later after I get back from vacation. I picked a extra one up from someone who sold his Mooney. Thought I keep it in the plane..I already have a one and also two manual pushbars. After thinking it over I don't need two Sidewinders..They work awesome! Wanted to add to this..If you are looking to buy now then buy "Mcpilot's" first. After I reread my post it sounded kind of tacky tossing mine in the mix..I'm not even sure when I'll post mine for sale. So if you are looking for quick buy on a nice unit for what looks like a good price I would jump on his. It might be several months before I post. I know people are always looking for these. Just keep it in mind These are great..no gas, no push/pull and they hold a great charge..GLWS. -Tom -
I wondered why I had not seen my last flights..I'll check it and look for #6. Missed that feature and always gave people heads up where we were. Done and now works..Thanks -Tom
