  1. I'm in the process of upgrading my avionics. I'd consider a new garmin GNC255A nav/com, but I don't want to spend the money on a new CDI. I'm under the impression a KI209A will work with these, but not a KI209. Short of having the avionics shop check, how does one tell if they have a KI209A or KI209?
  2. What time do people show up?
  3. I'm leaning towards surface mounting.
  4. I'm considering an Aspen 1000 Pro. I'm wondering what is the best way to mount it. Surface mount it or flush with the panel? Any experience is appreciated.
  5. This seems to be my experience, now that I have hit that age. I'm able to read small print in bright light, but if its dim, forget it. Fortunately, I am able to read well enough that my medical does not require reading glasses. However, reading glasses are really cheap, like $5. I just stash a pair or two in the plane. And back to the topic of ramp checks. I know there is a requirement to show AROW, but I didn't realize there was a requirement to show your reading glasses (compliance with the medical restrictions).
  6. Personally, I would hand over AROW documents at a ramp check and not worry about it. On the other hand, if someone wants more than that, I'm not inclined to participate.
  7. For me too, it also depends on the type of damage. A gear up that has been properly fixed doesn't bother me at all, and may even be a positive if it got a one piece belly, a newer prop, and a lower time rebuilt engine from a quality shop. On the other hand, if tubing was replaced because of SB208, I know there was moisture and rust inside the plane. Maybe it spent a lot of time outside? It's not technically damage history, but....
  8. What makes my blood boil is that Air Trek was shut down for more than a year because of a bureaucrat. A bureaucrat that faces no personal liability for his actions.
  9. Just because something is a privileged, it should not mean abandoning your constitutional rights. In particular due process.
  10. DHS will try to pervert the system to their benefit. They will of course model it on the internal boarder check points that currently stop folks that have not even left the country. And for those who don't know about the internal check points, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Border_Patrol_Interior_Checkpoints The best course is to tell them they don't have permission, record everything, and then sue afterwards if they proceed.
  11. What is the difference between a Chandelle, a Wing Over, and a Hammer Head? Are they all the similar, but differ in degree?
  12. I brought donuts when I picked up my plane from the last annual! All in the shop seemed to appreciate it.
  13. This has happened before with cars. http://www.abajournal.com/news/article/man_convicted_in_tex-mex_pot_smuggling_scheme_that_ensnared_innocent_driver/ and http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/23/world/americas/mexico-blind-drug-mules Throw it on the ground and go like there is no tomorrow! There is more than one person in a Mexican jail after calling the police for similar incidents.
  14. For Texas GC §411.205. REQUIREMENT TO DISPLAY LICENSE. (a) If a license holder is carrying a handgun on or about the license holder's person when a magistrate or a peace officer demands that the license holder display identification, the license holder shall display both the license holder's driver's license or identification certificate issued by the department and the license holder's handgun license. So if you are asked for ID, you might ask if they are a licenced peace officer in the state of Texas.
  15. +1 on the cheap alkalines. Cosco, Sams, Amazon, etc.
  16. For those that don't understand the loss of rights, you should check out the just released AOPA video. And remember, don't complain when home land security decides to pull your plane apart on the ramp. You might spend the night in jail too. http://www.aopa.org/aircraft/articles/2013/130516pilot-detained-searched-for-mysterious-reasons.html?WT.mc_id=130517epilot&WT.mc_sect=gan
  17. I've never been ramp checked. I have however heard stories of some older pilots who have had things like gear up landings, and no medical. I always wondered how much trouble they could get into. Not that someone in their 90s may actually care.
  18. Congratulations!
  19. I'm thinking about attending the MAPA PPP program in Oklahoma City at the end of the month. Just wondering if anyone else is planning to attend?
  20. I suspect the biggest problem with adding any sort of tire sealant, or Run Flat tires is they generally depend on a tubeless tire. And I am not quite sure how one would take a split rim design and make the rim seal. Maybe a channel with an O ring? On the hand, maybe the split rim already has an O ring to make it air tight. --It's been a while since I have changed a tire on a plane, and never on a Mooney. There are products you can buy, like "fix a flat" that may work. I would not risk that on my plane. Who knows what would happen after 4+ hours of -20 degrees, and then a landing. I'd be more inclined to pull the tube out and patch it, but only if I was stranded in ...... well the Caribbean come to mind.
  21. I can assure you that a pinch flat shows the same on an aircraft tube. I don't like to admit it, but I managed this while flight training. Not enough pressure in the front tire of a 172, and a hard 3 point landing at night. --Clearly my technique could have been better (and is now). Anyway, the tire didn't go flat immediately. And by wrinkle, I think he was referring to a folded area of the tube. Eventually, these can wear through.
  22. Thanks! That is what I was looking for. And your right about the POH not having a cruise setting at 100%. I was thinking of the power vs speed chart. It shows 35% power to 75% power in incriments of 10%, then jumps 100% to get 231 mph. Clearly marketing had a hand in this.
  23. Interesting. Where did you find O rings for it?
  24. Are the 35% to 75% power setting generally considered ok? Is it just the 100% cruise power setting that is an issue? I understand the issues with CHT, TIT, and CDT.
  25. I have to agree ground speed was great yesterday. 190kts with a low power setting. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N9821P/history/20130505/1259Z/KGTU/KGLS Unfortunately, I had to pay for it on the way back. 75% power, 4000 ft, and bumpy. Back on topic, it looks like break fluid to me. Pull the belly and track it down, or send it to your mechanic.
