  1. Some time back, someone made a comment that the POH settings for the 231 were "not good". I searched a bit in the forums, but didn't find what I was looking for. So, what is it about the power settings in the POH that's not good for the engine?
  2. Have you looked at the one on the controller http://www.controller.com/listingsdetail/aircraft-for-sale/MOONEY-M20K-231/1981-MOONEY-M20K-231/1255725.htm It is worth looking through the logs to give an idea for maintenance expectations. For me, things like custom engine mounts and exhaust seems to push it beyond my comfort zone.
  3. Wow! My first thought were: This can't be real! Why are the wheels down? Looks like a stall. I wonder if it was the cargo, engine, or something else. I better not let my daughter see this, or she is never getting in the plane with me agian.
  4. First, I have not had my IFR ticket for very long (January). I got my training in Michigan (in a 172) and most was in real IMC, and about half at night. For me, the biggest difference was turbulence and ice. Flying in the clouds was bumpy. And it's amazing how fast a plane can pick up ice. I believe we did unusual attitude recovery in simulated conditions, but real VMC. My hardest approach was a VOR-A without a DG or AI (I think he covered the TC as well). The compass sure bounces around! Transitioning to my new Mooney has been hard. Things happen a lot faster.
  5. The auto pilot is a Stec 30. I have no idea what kind of trim system is installed. It has two buttons that need to be pushed together with your thumb. I'll have to see if the behavior changes with the auto pilot settings
  6. I have a similar problem. Sometimes the electric trim seems to work. Other days it doesn't. I haven't taken the time to find out what is going on, since the manual trim works just fine.
  7. With a procedure where the plane is jacked from the wings, and the prop is later lifted, it doesn't really take much force. It can be lifted by hand and that's from someone who doesn't work out. I am skeptical that this could possibly cause damage. Now, if someone decided to jack the front of the plane up 3 feet or so, I can see where there would be more stress on the prop.
  8. Interesting on the "-WARNING- DO NOT use propeller jacks to lift aircraft.". I wonder what event generated the SB.
  9. I took a trip to Dugosh on Friday. It's always fun to see and learn new things. Check out the plane in need of SB208 and the old truss. My plane is the one on jacks. It's new to me and it was darting a bit. An adjustment of the nose gear and all is good.
  10. I don't like any of the options. So, RWY 2 Extra room for an early failure. And you might be able to put it down on the train tracks, for a 90 degree turn.
  11. I have manual speed brakes. For me, I do not land with them out. One more thing to deal with if a go around is required.
  12. I ended up adding the Merlyn waste gate to my new to me M20K 231. I wish I could describe the performance difference before and after the waste gate, but I didn't fly the plane before adding the waste gate. --I knew if I didn't add the waste gate now, I would probably never get around to it.
  13. I use Aero Shell 100 plus. Too early to tell if it is better/worse than anything else.
  14. Details?
  15. Sounds like my first step is to clean the contacts on the KY197s. If the digits come back, it sounds like it worth keeping one in the panel as a second radio. It also sounds like the KMA 24 audio panel is going to stay. In this case, I'd want a second nav radio. Either the KN53 or the KNS 80. At the moment, I'm leaning towards keeping the KNS80, since it has DME. But it does take more space.
  16. Where would I go to get a new faceplate with digits? Thanks!
  17. The auto pilot is S-TEC 30.
  18. Both of the KY197s have lenses that are going bad, and some of the digit segments don't light. I also see you kept your KNS80. I'm curious why? I'm thinking I may keep mine too. It has DME,Nav, and Glide slope. --And I couldn't sell it for very much. Then, I could go with a com only radio as a backup to the 650, or keep the KY197 until I can't read the display anymore.
  19. I have a new to me Mooney 231. It could probably use a pannel upgrade. I have a budget of $20K, but I seem to be going over. Here is what I am thinking: GMA 350 Audio Panel GTN 650 w/Altitude encoder GNC255A (Nav/Com). The king radios are old. GPSS roll steering A GTX330/ES transponder Unfortunately, this leaves no money for an install! I could keep the older KY197 (missing a few segments) and the KN53 Nav radio. And to further reduce the budget, keep the old KT76A transponder. I'd love to hear suggestions
  20. I'm just curious if anyone else had their check ride in IMC?
  21. I've used a Redbird, and it was a positive experience. I have yet to get my home based simulator (X-Plane) working well, but this is probably more a function of how much time I have spent on it. --I guess I need to turn my teenager loose on it.
  22. Like the origional poster, I had too many demands with work and home life. I took weeks off and left town. 10 days into it, I was taking my check ride. Being away from home (and work) was great for focus, but it did put pressure on me to do well with the check ride. I was also very happy with the experiences gained. I ended up with about 20 hours of real IMC and got to experience ice a few times. For advice, get the written test done before you put the effort/time into "in the air" training.
  23. I was considering a Rocket for a period of time. I found it useful to look at an example on the controller. http://www.controller.com/listingsdetail/aircraft-for-sale/MOONEY-M20K-231/1981-MOONEY-M20K-231/1255725.htm This one has the log books posted and you can get an idea of what maintenance is being performed beyond any other plane.
  24. Hi Greg, I am still looking for a partner. I'll PM you. For news on this front. Just this week I became the owner of a Mooney M20K 231. It just went through an annual at Dugosh and is having a Merlyn Waste gate installed now. I'll be picking it up next Friday. Chris
  25. This is by far the best explanation I have heard for the usefulness of an intercooler. i.e. to prevent detonation due to a hot intake air.
