  1. I thought I remembered someone sending a sample of upholstery fabric out to be burn checked for use in a plane. I'm having trouble finding the discussion. While pulling my side panels for a redye I noticed that there has been foil covered foam insulation added in place of the original. I didn't see an entry in the log book and thought I would like to send a sample out to be checked. Anyone out there done this before who might enlighten me on the procedure?

  4. You are probably better off buying a new cover just to get the proper fit to antennas etc. I thought about a used cover and actually borrowed one from a friends plane for the short term. That little exercise of putting another planes cover on mine convinced me to just buy a new one. I did buy the Plane Cover brand and I am very satisfied. It arrived late last week and the fitment etc is very nice. It's not cheap but it's not expensive either. I can understand why it cost what it does as it's not exactly a mass produced item and material quality and workmanship are top notch. now seat belts....that is a different story. Damn they are expensive and I really don't know what is so different automotive vs aircraft?

  6. On my old E model I fashioned two wide rubber bands out of an inner tube and stretched one over and around the edge of each latch. This allowed me to open the latch when needed but also held it in the latched position when my hand accidentally rubbed over or caught on it when moving the J bar. A larger bicycle inner tube would probably work better or maybe a wide rubber band is available somewhere that would work also.
  7. From what I know, the method the plane was repaired is acceptable by the FAA. I saw the plane in its damaged condition prior to any repair and prior to the sale. I saw no damage to the wing ribs just damage in between the ribs at the leading edge. When first looking at the plane I would have preferred the entire skin section replaced but after talking with other shops, this method is pretty standard procedure. I really don't see what is wrong with the patch method in this instance? It sure keeps the repair cost down and the potential to afford the plane up. The method of repair was disclosed. I don't think he is trying to get away with anything.
  8. The Mooney was never disassembled to move. Temporary patches were put on the wing leading edge and plane was flown to Tennessee. I was in contact with the fellow that bought it, Brent Pressley, shortly after the auction was over. I flew down to look at it prior to paint etc and talked to Brent about it. He was straight forward on the repairs etc and seemed like a real descent guy to do business with. I came really close to buying the plane but at the eleventh hour I got a call on a 1978 J from an estate that had about 1100 hrs total time on it. I am now the proud owner of the 1978 but I don't think I would have had any regrets if I would have ended up with the 1981.

  10. I had entered the Avidyne "give away" about a month ago so today I got a call from a sales person. I expected this would happen and was looking forward to talking with them. It sounds as if their 440 can be bought in complete kit form for about $12k and the 540 for about $14k. I'm sure these are an improvement over the old Garmin 430 and 530 but still a lot of money. I imagine a could buy two 430 waas units and have them installed for the price of the the Avidyne 440 still in the box. Has anyone out there experienced a better sales price on either of the Avidynes mentioned? I just can't justify that kind of money. Am I wrong?
  11. John, I looked up through the gear door of mine and I could see the end of the spring hooked to a tab at a link rod end. I was able to loosen the nut on the tab and rotate the tab which stretched the spring about 3/4 inch then re tighten the nut. I haven't had a chance to fly it yet but I have a feeling the problem will go away.
  12. ZDDP is available in a small, about 4 oz bottle, for use as a cam and flat tappet additive. I think it is a zink enhanced treatment.Is there a problem with adding it to an aircraft engine? I agree, the new oils are formulated differently now and that is the reason for new engines in autos and aircraft going to roller cam shaft sets. In the early 1950s the auto industry had a severe problem with cam failures and the petroleum industry added zink to cure the problem.
  13. Dave, just got my new Flying Magazine and the unfortunate incident of Martha twice clipping the wings of your Cessna 150 which ultimately led to you purchasing my E model is in print. Very sad for Martha but somewhat fortunate for you and for me.
  14. This is ironic but yesterday I took off in my J and cycled the flaps and gear up and noticed I still had the green light on the panel for the gear down. The floor window said it was still down so I asked the tower and they verified down. I landed and tied the plane down thinking this plane is going to be expensive. I started home then remembered that I had gone through the emergency manual gear sequence last week in a "touchie feelie" type of way and had pulled the breaker as part of my exercise. I sure thought I would have reset the breaker but probably didn't. I went back to the plane and sure enough the breaker was out. Now I'm afraid to take off and cycle the gear up as maybe it won't come back down. Sorry, Mike, I know this isn't helping you out but just wondering if your breaker had popped out as I mentioned in my previous post.

  19. Bumping this back to the top. I'm still looking for a used set of shoulder equipped belts for my plane. Really can't bring myself to spend $800 for a new set.
  20. I think you are right. I borrowed the cover from my old E model and the antennas on the new plane will really need to be addressed when ordering a new cover.
  21. Thanks for that offer ,Tom. Mine was a 211 cc and the guys had a rebuilt in stock for $250 plus an hour labor charge. I already had the top,cowling off. That deal sounded pretty fair so I told them to put it on. I actually wanted to do it myself as I feel better about flying what I fix.
  22. I took the top cowl off today. The spring is there and door doesn't appear to be hitting anything but I'll look again tomorrow while cycling the door.
