  2. Mooney Caravan: Kansas Air Capital Formation Clinic Join us for a weekend of fun, flying, and fellowship in the Air Capital of the World! The primary goal of the formation practice session is to introduce the basic 2-ship formation procedures required for participation in the Mooney Caravan to Oshkosh 2016 formation mass arrival to AirVenture Oshkosh. For those pilots proficient in basic 2-ship formation they will have the opportunity to both refine their fundamentals and work on 4-ship procedures. Experienced formation pilots will be paired with new pilots to serve as safety pilots.   5. What you could do is ask KSMooniac nicely to take a 'prescreen' look at it with your friend prior to committing to full prebuy. If your friend does want a local ICT A&P look I can give a couple local recs (not as good as a DMax prebuy, but could be a good first-look).

  7. Let's not mix apples and oranges. All Li batteries are NOT created equal. No comparison between a motorcycle battery and what is already (or soon will be) certified for aircraft. I'll bet that by the time the ADS-B mandate kicks in you'll have a certified Li battery option available from your favorite supplier for your Mooney. Besides, doesn't everyone whisper sexy things to their airplane during engine start anyway? With an Li battery you'll just get her turned on and rev'd up that much faster. Maybe the quick excitation factor is what drove True Blue's color choice. Someday soon we'll all be using little blue batteries to help get it started.

  9. You're thinking way too hard. Tower has cleared you to land on 36. The runway is now yours so GO LAND! Simple as that. If the tower provides additional or specific instruction then comply. Tower knew exactly where you were so no need to tell them anything other than acknowledging your clearance to land. For clarity: if at a non-towered field then all non-towered traffic pattern procedures apply.

  14. 14CFR23.1311 thru .1321 it provides good guidance. BL: Minimize head/eye movement. I would not move the radio stack any further left. Reason being is that I would not want the right half of the yoke to interfere with my ability to program the nav/comms. You don't want to reach around the yoke to access the radios. No further left than the throttle. Rant: the stratus/iPad is NOT a backup attitude indicator! Good for situational awareness, but that is the limit. If you ever did get into an unusual attitude expect your stratus will end up on the cabin floor. CFI hint: if you ever do hood work with me and i see your diligently fiddling with your iPad synthetic vision while your cross check suffers you can bet I'll "adjust" the attitude of the stratus in the middle of a procedure turn and smile. They made me divert to Kingman (IGM) when inbound past the the Prescott VOR (DRK) during our arrival from the USS Sedona. Something special going on that creates a restriction (almost TFR-like). I will see what happens when we depart." Dave: No TFR but you were in the way of LAS arrival traffic. On V105 they were probably moving you off the arrival routing for the TYSSN THREE and KADDY 1. The iron converges at KADDY at 12000. Now you know why you were pushed down to 10k. And a little SW of your planned route.

You'll overfly the PHX mess and it's just over two hours down the road from Vegas. Departing RYN you'll pass just south of Davis-Monthan AFB and should have a great view of the aircraft boneyard. All the MEAs are 11K or less if you're going IFR.   18. That little machine screw may be from one of the avionics trays. Perhaps dropped during a panel upgrade or repair and may have been riding around down in the floor/belly for a while. Easy to drop a screw working on your back stuffed up under the instrument panel. They'd install from inside the tray in order to attach the tray to the panel bracing and are countersunk to allow the avionics to slide into the tray. You can imagine the potential hassle to install.   19. Jim, Not an issue. Take your time, hold the yoke aft. Bring tie downs. For parking, consider three plywood squares (or some cheap Walmart kitchen cutting boards) to put under your wheels to help prevent sinking into the grass should it get a little wet. Haven't been to SnF, but OSH many times (231 and V-tail). Don't fear the grass, but keep your head up and eyeballs out. Enjoy the show!
  20. The obstruction lights are sync' by design. Just imagine if that many lights were all firing off independently. Would be one heck of a headache generator.
  21. I think you need to examine this from a different angle. You seem to be implying that this unqualified pilot was doing everything right until 'mother nature' reared up and pulled him down to his death. I say NO. We are not passengers passively going on our merry way until tragically plucked from the sky by forces beyond our control. We are Pilots In Command and as such our lives are dependent on our ability to safely operate within our own capabilities and the limitations of our aircraft. Exceeding our own capabilities due to lack of judgement or skill is playing Russian roulette. You may get lucky a couple times but sooner or later there will be a live round in the chamber. Yes, this pilot had a skill problem. The IFR rating ensures a prescribed minimum amount of training was conducted and a minimum level of proficiency was demonstrated in order to obtain the rating. While the ticket is just a piece of paper, like a diploma, you can't get one without going to school and passing the final exams. The mishap pilot was operating beyond his abilities, others knew he was a hazard but nobody intervened. Sad. When your study aircraft accidents your perspective must be "as PIC, what would I have done differently leading up that scenario to avoid/prevent that accident". "Break the chain". Pilots (human error) are responsible for 80 percent of all aircraft accidents. We pilots have a responsibility to learn from the mistakes others have made so to lessen our chances of repeating them. Always maintain proactive approach. Stay ahead of the aircraft.
  22. Great way to take advantage of a training oppurtunity. Hopefully an inspiration toward starting on your own IFR rating. Even better that your wife was on board to witness the increase in capability/utility of your aircraft when operated by a proficient IFR pilot. Kudos to you and your CFII.
