Dual Battery Maintenance - Splitter or 2 chargers?

Reading old posts, I see that @LANCECASPER has the BatteryMinder with splitter setup for dual 24V batteries. Does anyone else? I read reviews of the splitter (other sites) where 1 battery was lost without indication when using the splitter. I am looking for owners with long term experience using a single charger plus splitter for dual batteries. -dan -

With FlyQ (therefore I would expect the same for ForeFlight), I see updated weather and notam's through ADS-B all around me. This is regardless of what I may have filed and downloaded on the ground by internet. At any point in time, I can select an airport in my region and see updated weather. I believe the NOTAM's are also updated, but that is more difficult to test as they are not time stamped with an update every hour. Some caveat, the updated weather seems to be only within 200 miles or so. As a practical example, on a long flight of 600 nm, for example, I will see the last internet loaded weather for my destination until I am about 200 miles from my destination airport. I can get ADS-B updated weather for the airports right around me pretty much instantly. This may be a limit of what is uploaded from any given ADS-B station. Therefore I would expect that if I had the diversion of the OP but with FlyQ and my ADS-B feed, that I would have recent NOTAMS for an KCRS, as I was near it for some time, even though I did not load NOTAMS about it explicitly by internet before takeoff. That he did not, suggests a Foreflight or ADS-B update issue. -
Check the performance of your autopilot. On my J (so I assume all of them) the electric trim is through the AP, whether the AP is engaged or not. If you engage your AP and it is able to control pitch (you can see the trim wheel moving), then the problem is most likely your yoke switch and not something more drastic. FYI: Similarly, if you remove your AP for service, your electric trim will not work anymore.

Someone posted about the correct orientation of the LED's is 90° from the factory incandescent which were oriented to have longer filament life with a symmetric pattern. They notched the metal carrier ring to permit the LED bulb to be rotated. Does this apply to Parmetheus in your J? (posted at the same time, see this was addressed)

M20J Main Gear Tire and Tube Recommendations

I prefer the Good year FC3's due to their stiff sidewall. Compare side by side at your next shop visit (assuming they have a varied collection of used tires not yet disposed of). The Goodyears are stiffer, and I "feel" this will be an advantage in a failure. A little less sag when the tire blows, is a good thing with a limited ground clearance prop and gear doors. I have not tested having a blow out, so I cannot confirm this is true. Just my thoughts on how I justify the expensive tires. -

Throughout the thread was talk about getting noise from in the cockpit. I have used a few of these apps for work purposes, listed below. I am currently between planes, but will get a screen capture of the noise in an Ovation in late January if things go as planned. I trust these apps for the spectrum. Amplitude accuracy has not been verified in my use. On my J, I can quickly feel the heat difference when I transition from LOP to ROP. I have to fiddle with the cool air knob to get back to a comfy mixed setting. Never measured it directly, but at the vent output, the difference is more than 6F. That could be differences between J and F heaters, or maybe the metal temperature of the duct you are measuring does not change as much as the air temperature swing.

An interesting read about airport closures in California, created by CalTrans, and seemingly they are in favor of keeping airports going. Back Country & Off-Field Landing in a Mooney

Especially true for an unimproved strip. Check your insurance. You are not likely covered for intentionally landing at a strip like this. Even if you consider the plane expendable, if you could not fly out for some reason, you would be stuck with the costs of getting it out of there. -

Having the added rear legroom, means the front seats slide further back in my J (or an F) versus an E. This make entry easier, making the plane an easier purchase case for a spouse who will value comfort more than performance. -
Claudio, You should get familiar with the different versions of the M20J. Which years have 1-piece bellies, split/removable rear seats, different controls, and more. Jimmy Garrison's M20J evaluation guide includes that history. Someone else has a spreadsheet showing when these features were phased in. -dan

Do you have a picture of the final wrap, applied to the yoke? I am curious about some of the details around the corners, and how it looks as a final product. Maybe it works better on the original yokes versus the J style yokes?

Me too. I think it is more about daring pilots who consider it an emergency at LESS than 45 minutes, and declaring when there is no time to effect a change. Better phrasing may have been, "it is appropriate to declare emergency at or before reaching 45 minutes remaining fuel". -

On this topic, I recall being told that when you are at 45 min reserve, is when you declare a fuel emergency. Not when you "think" you are low on fuel and decide it is an emergency. How accurate is that? -
As a reference point when looking at overhaul costs, a new exhaust from Knisely is about $2.5k.

I recommend getting the cheapest used example of folding bike you can find on craigslist. Old Dahons and Chinese Amazon knockoffs are usually plenty deep there. See if you really like the concept of flying and biking, or maybe you decide you might prefer the chargeable scooter option. Then invest in something more expensive that rides better or fits in the plane better, etc. The portable transportation pit is bottomless, and they never sell for as much as you paid for them. -

I have a pair or Bromptons. They fold fast, but not as fast as that demo! There are two threaded knobs that lock the frame and handlebars into position, and they take about 5 seconds each, if you are not trying to race. The Bromptons do ride with big bike comfort on good surfaces. The small wheels are not as bad as you think, but I have also had small wheel folders that felt wobbly and clown-ish. There is a variety of designs, prices, and performance in folders. I am much shorter than you, but you can get a tall seat post, and the P-type bars I have are a decent height already. I can fit the Brompton through the hatch if I am patient. With the tall seat post, I suspect it would be just large enough to not clear the hatch, and be relegated to the rear seat. For people with Bromptons, they fit in $10 IKEA Dimpa bags, which are very durable. Forget the +100 bag from Brompton. -dan -

If it helps, on my J, the ideal hot start throttle opening is where it clicks for the gear warning horn. I push the throttle until the I hear/feel the switch click. YMMV, but for me that gives something a little more repeatable than "about a 1/4"" or "crack the throttle a little". -

@sleeper-319 When I lived in SoCal (including many years at WHP), I used to go to Catalina often enough that I got the annual membership (unlimited landings, pays off in about 3 or 4 trips) I do not think it is very hard, aside from all the visual illusions. Being on a plateau and a slightly convex surface with a false horizon once you land. When the video ends, there is 2k feet remaining, but the false horizon makes it seem much shorter. I support your idea of going with someone who knows landing there, not necessarily a CFI, who can give some guidance.
