Best Place for a Mooney Annual in the Northeast
Cris replied to joegoersch's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
This year I did a compromise with my my annual in that I used a highly trained MSC IA that trained at an MSC and has the Mooney tools as opposed to a trusted mechanic. Call Tom at On Site Aero Services at Eagles Nest Airport 31 E (north of Atlantic City) 732 -278-8201 if you want a through and fairly priced annual. I was very pleased as we cleaned up a number of niggling issues and he caught an AD that is on the R but not on the S and yet is actually applicable to my AC confirmed by the factory. -
My Screamin Eagle 310 HP STC has a useful load of 1122 lbs. Full tanks are 75 gals as certified, 89 Gals as STC'd or 100 gals with R supplement. Mooney uses 5.82 lbs/gal Thus "payload" for the above is 685.5 lbs, 604 Lbs and 540 Lbs. Respectively. Take your choice but in the end payload is always a function of fuel load chosen.

I called Electroaire. They said yes it is approved and STC'ed for the IO550 TCM Mooney but they are behind on their web site so the info is not shown as of yet. They sell thru distributors and you can get a better price as opposed to buying direct. The kit from a local distributor was quoted to me at 4950. I think the list is 5500 or 5800 . They estimate 8-20 hrs on the install for your IA. Essentially three days down time with the third day related to flight testing and adjustments.

Dennis Where did you see hat approval. It is not on the Electroaire website unless I missed it somehow.?

One of the interesting things about the 310 Eagle/Ovation not usually discussed is that you can get 60% power thru 18 K . Thus if you are flying LOP that might be where you would be in any event but without the need for a turbo. So for the occasional trip to altitude it makes great sense particularly with portable O2 since there is no weight penalty except when you need O2

WTB: Engine-blanket/Fuselage/Wings/Tail Covers for M20J

If you still need these let me know as I have a set available. -
Go to the Mooney site and download the supplement for the 50 or 51 gal fuel for the R. The supplement contains the weight and balance info. Put this in your POH and add your serial number to the front of the supplement and you are legal. Oh don't forget to add the placards or whatever else is in the supplement. This works for the R and the 310 hp STC S but not for the stock S

George I'd assume this would be considered a minor alteration and loged as such if there is no drawing. Alternatively it might be another example of that mysterios maintenance Pixie that stops by on occasion.

I did notice an interesting round hole in the photograph posted above...? See post #15. Best regards, Anthony Thanks Good point. I did notice that pic but have seen a few posts that reference a mooney drawing that specifies where the holes are drilled. If that drawing exists, I'd like to see it to verify mine have been drilled correctly.

Not sure about the level of the fuel in your tank but in mine it is always to the top of the wing skin in order to get a fuel load of 100 gals. The POH or AFM specifies 75 gals. The STC increases that to 89 gals same as the Ovation so I would think that is a limitation. With that said there is a Mooney drawing for 100/102 gals for the R so maybe you can make an argument that since the STC allows the same fuel load as an R you can add the additional fuel if you have the Mooney drawing in the POH/AFM. If not I'd suspect it is not legal. Otherwise why would you need a drawing from Mooney to fill to 100 gals.? I'd be curious to see how the Monroy STC for long range tanks on the Mooney treats this issue.
-
The differance is the unuseable fuel which is 3 gals per side. Under perfect conditions you can squeeze 102 gals into the wings plus the 6 gals for a total of 108 gals or so. The 75,89, etc are always useable fuel quantities. I do believe there was a factory option on the R for the Monroy STC which further increased the useful fuel for long range tanks.

Ovation with Monroy Tanks - Wing Gauges reading
Cris replied to shorrick mk2's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Do you not have a fuel totalizer like a Miniflow L or an engine monitor with fuel flow? If so you can check the accuracy of the totalizer after a few flights since all of the long bodies hold 100 gals when fueled to the top of the wing skins. I'd then suspect the aux tanks to hold 10 gals/side. Just an educated guess on my part but you can make a fuel stick to enable you to check that amount of fuel in the aux tank. -
Chris No misunderstanding here. You were doing your best to get the info out. And it was great for you to take the lead on this. My Thanks. As we have discussed this is almost a buyer beware mess across the industry. As Jose' said it may be best to chose just one mfg. even though one would like to mix and match. More to the point what works today in a mixed environment may well not work sometime down the line depending on future software/ firmware releases. With that said Garmin sold the GMX 200 MFD as open architecture but they don't seem to support that concept today or even provide timely updates to keep it operational. Mine drops off line periodically with XM weather due to some memory overload from XM. Garmin is well aware of the problem and promises a fix sometime before the end of the year. We'll see. I was also surprised to learn that Avidyne had to reverse engineer the maps protocol on this unit to get it to work with their IFD 550/440. Says a lot about Garmins open architecture support. I do understand that Garmin does not want to play nice for a number of reasons but the GMX 200 should not be part of that play because of Garmin's previous commitment. IMHO. Just sayin' and for the record I like Garmin I just want the benifit of the bargain.
-
Although I missed the presentation due to a previous commitment, I have been in touch with the BK factory rep. He informed me that the KNS 770 would not display XM weather from my Garmin GDL 69. Thus I would have to change out my Garmin unit for BK's unit. There was also an issue with my GMX 200 MFD which I don't recall at the moment. The point is this unit may not be as universal with other equipment ie Garmin as described. For that reason I am now hesitant where I had been very positive. Of course for me the GTN 650 is an easy option but maybe the Avidyne 440 might work. In any event I suspect that Avidyne will have to bring their street price down once the initial demand is fulfilled.

Jim That is true but is actually 10k less than it used to be. More to the point is that you have to consider that the resale value is also enhanced by some amount. This investment is not a zero sum game. Mooney itself uses this same STC for the Ovation 3 which I belive is the only Ovation now being produced. Think of this as a new radio like a GTN 750 or a new paint job. There is certainly a cost but there is also a benefit. Price is what you pay but value is what you get.
-
Aside from the cost the 310 HP STC on the Eagle or Ovation simply increases the performance envelope making it safer in the takeoff mode since it uses less runway and climbs faster to get over obstacles. In the landing mode it lands shorter than the standard Eagle due to the drag of the three bladed prop although I'd suspect a slight decrease in engine out glide performance. You also get 60% power thru 18k in case you want to fly high not to mention 200 Kts if you can stomach the fuel burn. You also receive a gross weight increase to 3368 lbs and it allows the additional legal fuel to be increased from 75 to 89 gals. On the other hand the STC still allows one to operate at the low power settings described as efficient. There really is no downside to this STC and is an amazing bang for the buck on the Eagle which is why so many have been converted albeit with the help of prop strikes and gear ups.

Pirep Request: Air Conditioning in an Ovation
Cris replied to smccray's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Here you go. The Artuc air site is www.articair.com and look at the products. It is also sold thru Sporty's so they may be a reference source. It appears it is highly dependent on the size one gets and the amps put out by one's alternator. I'd opt for the two fan 24v version. I would think an Ovation Alternator would work just fine. As always buyer beware. -

There is now a potable air conditioner system which is about 5k but can be left on the ground when not needed for useful load. That would be my choice and opens options for your future ride. -
Bill What time is this event? I would like to go but have a commitment thru 1 pm so can't get there until latter.

The R Moritz gauge is a differant part number and can't be legally substituted for the S Moritz guage with one exception. If you have the Midwest 310 Hp STC you can use the R fuel gauge in place of the S Moritz gauge since the STC allows the upgrade to 89 gals of fuel and the use of the R fuel gauge in place of the S fuel guage.

Thanks to all. It turned out to be an easy part to get as it is made by Shaw who also mfg. the fuel caps. With that said It is ridiculously expensive at $44.50 for a silly piece of plastic with a couple of loops. Ugh.
