  1. Quote: jnisley Thanks Brett for sharing this post, last August my instructor/friend Dale Stearns and his IFR student were killed in a night IFR training session, flying for me hasn't been the same since. (Dale was my instructor from introductory flight to IFR checkride and beyond) We can beat ourselves up over the "should haves" and "what ifs" but learning from these happenings are what we need to focus on.
  2. Quote: Skybrd First I would like to pay my respects to Patrick and his family. After reading about his accident, was wondering if Columbia airport in California could be dangerous for Mooneys with the terrain rising shortly after liftoff. The last time I departed Columbia mid day and the density altitude being over 4000 feet, I notice my climbout was not very good. I had my fuel tanks almost topped off and had one passenger. I'm planning on moving near Columbia soon and wonder if any of you have had simular low climb at that airport. I read that a Beech Bonanza had a problem with Columbia. BTW, I used partial flaps on take off and held my brakes for a short while for the engine to wind up.
  3. Quote: sreid With the factory operating with just a bare bones crew, it's becoming extremely hard to maintain these birds. Parts seem to be available, but you better be patient and willing to be without an airplane for a very long time. I hate to say it, but I'm starting to lose the passion for owning my Mooney. Probably because for 5 months I basically haven't owned an airplane, while I wait for parts that never seem to come despite being months beyond estimated delivery dates. Oh, I understand that the people that are still there at the factory are doing the best they can with the resources they have available, to keep us in the air. That doesn't change the fact that my hangar bill still keeps coming due every month, and my annual and static system/transponder inspection dates get closer to expiring every second that clicks by while the plane is parked and I'm not getting any enjoyment out of the pile of money I spent on this plane. The problem is that I don't know of any planes that have the capability to fly the missions that my Mooney can fly. It's hard to beat 145 KTAS on < 10 gph, 5+ hours endurance, and 1000lb useful load. I can load 4 people, camping gear, and 40 gallons of gas, for ~3 hours endurance before stopping for fuel. Not even the G36 that I fly at work can do this, assuming I even wanted to pay the bloated prices Bonanzas seem to fetch and their thirsty fuel flows. Anyone have any suggestions of planes to look at with similar capabilities to the F/J models? Steve
  4. Thank you for sharing Brett. Please don't beat yourself up and know that you may not have been able to change the future and this is not your fault even a little bit.
  5. Quote: AustinPynes Where are the pics? Also is this a 7 or 7 plus? Google Play said it wasnt for my 7 plus.
  6. Check out my new setup. Just installed it last night on my A Samsung Galaxy 7'' running Garmin Pilot Android. Just test flew it this morning. It works very well! The software is not QUITE as nice as FF yet, but its new and I expect it to catch up quickly - and anyway the software is already quite nice enough. I am running on the 30 day free trial but I am fully expecting to buy. I did already buy the georeferenced charts for $49/year and I expect i will also buy the safe-taxi for $29 - Garmin has finally gotten with the program data updates that are in line with the competitors. I LOVE FF, but I hate the ipad in the cockpit - too BIG! Look at how nicely the Galaxy 7'' sits inside the yoke without interfering with hand positions or blocking any certified instruments. It is quite big enough even for approach plates. I think this size is essentially the perfect solution. The Galaxy 7'' 2 is $249, includes built in GPS - but I am expecting I will couple it to my dualGPS wifii gps - nice touch screen that is not sensitive to polarized sunglasses like my ipad 1. I have some parts of old raam mounts that allowed me to rig this up very securely, and without an actual clip for the Galaxy - instead I put a big ol' piece of velcro on the whole back of the Galaxy and on the raam flat plat and they just stick very firmly, but also easy to remove - I am going to charge continuously from inside the airplane and remove it just for chart updates. For me this is essentially perfect.
  7. Quote: jetdriven I just can't do it. That iPad creates a blind spot the size of a 747-400. And to think of the head injuries by the right seat passenger if you do have a whoopsie.
  8. Quote: Mitch Jolie and I spent some quality time with Patrick during his paint process at Artcraft Painting. I have to say I gasped when I read your post Parker. I believe Jolie just spoke to Patrick a couple of days ago. This is very, very sad. I am sorry for his family............and just speechless right now.
  9. Quote: Parker_Woodruff Sad to say that Patrick Sheridan from this board and one other died in his Mooney. One other injured. http://citizensvoice.com/news/plane-crash-victims-were-aviation-students-1.1313369#axzz1uV5ODZfw I hadn't met him in person, but did talk to him on the phone a couple times giving him some shop advice. Fly safe, fellas.
  10. Quote: 1964-M20E Here is the link to EFII who produces the electronic ignition and fuel injection. Available from Aircraft Spruce for $5k experimentals only :-((. I figured approximately $6k with installation. http://www.flyefii.com/EFII_intro.htm http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/ptefii.php
  11. Quote: kerry I was reading they can be tuned to 150 HP. I've noticed that diesel aero engines don't have as much HP as their gasoline counter parts. Is this because of the torque? Does anybody know?
  12. Quote: The-sky-captain Does anybody know if the subaru boxer diesel has had any use in the experimental department. It would seem the boxer configuration would be ideal.
  13. Quote: borealone Keep your eyes out for the results of this recently announced partnership towards a big-block version of the already certified and in production Austro diesel engines used in the Diamond DA-42 twin... http://www.steyr-motors.com/news/news-single/steyr-motors-and-austro-engine-form-development-partnership-for-280hp-6-cylinder-aircraft-engine/b3cba3e7eddf7ed04ee7fd0811f582aa/
  14. Quote: DaV8or The problem with conversions, either turbine, or diesel, is high cost. In the case of the turbine, a small, suitable turbine like the RR engines, cost about $500,000. That doesn't include the prop, motor mounts, cowling, new instruments, engine controls and modifications to the fuel system. The diesel conversion would be much cheaper, but in no way cost effective. Even if say Delta Hawk, were able to match the price of a brand new Lycoming IO-360, you still have to buy a new prop, new cowl and baffle system (needing paint of course) , new motor mounts, firewall forward kit and some sort of mods for the fuel system. Then of course all the labor to do the conversion. For the few bucks you save on fuel, not worth it. Faced with this option, 90%+ would go with a new gas engine. Only if there were no more gasoline available (not likely) would some consider the diesel. However, in this case, a lot of people would simply sell their planes for whatever price they could get and quit flying.
  15. Quote: stevesm20b They already is a turbine Mooney. It's called a TBM850.
  16. Quote: jetdriven Someone is developing a 200HP turbine engine, and its 18 GPH.
  17. Quote: Mooneyjet Hey guys does anyone know about a turbine conversion on the old mooneys that in my books would make it the ultimate hot rod, how about a diesel conversion just getting ideas .
  18. Aerostar, Mitsubishi, or TBM relationships all begot nice but dramatically different airplanes even if perhaps a thread of common heratige - that M-22 is the only true twin version of our beloved M20s. Looks like the same frame and mostly the same wings with two engines instead of one on the nose. And you gotta love that unmistakable tail.
  19. Airplanes gain weight do to too much intake and not enough activity. Have you been flying it enough? Quote: jetdriven i wont let my airplane anywhere near a scale.
  20. Quote: jetdriven Brett, ADS-B is only useful above 5-800', and in some areas, 1800'. However, if you look at the radar on the ground on an iphone etc, its not too much of a delay.
  21. Free + shipping. You tell me where you are and we can sort out together how much shipping is. I just replaced my pilot side pastic panel with a brand new one in my K - the old one has a crack as shown, but otherwise it is quite repairable - maybe it is nicer than the one in your plane and you wish to have mine? I am not here to make money - just I would rather give it to you than send it to the landfill. I have the box in which they shipped my new panel and I will use it to ship to you this panel. Can you paypal? pm me if you are interested and we can sort something out. Erik
  22. Quote: JimR The regs don't say anything about the materials having to be "installed" in order to fall under the provisions of FAR Section 23.853. Just that they are in a compartment used by the crew or passengers. So, yes, by strict interpretation that would probably include removable floormats. At least the FAA could certainly argue that it does. That having been said, does your interior really see so much traffic that you need them? Mine does not. Floormats seem like an unecessary thing to haul around to me. Jim
