  1. Well, thanks that is good to know. It's hard to believe that flying in the same area as a 60 year old I'm more cognizant of the bird population than when I was 16 years old. I guess I had more important things on my mind back then. Scott, anyone I know ?
  2. I've been back in the air more in the last 6 months and see numbers of birds that I don't remember from say 16 years ago. Other information leads me to believe bird strikes are on the increase, or is it the same as always just better communication . Has any one studied this maybe as a result of better environmental policy, chemical control,....?
  3. " The training prices vary, but it can be had little to no cost (except for the travel expenses). Do a search on hypoxia training or altitude chamber training and you'll find several options." So, is it possible to simulate hypoxia by consuming a 6 pak? Could I have my bar buddies give a test or commands like : 1. Stand up 2. touch you nose with your index finger 3. walk this line toe to heel No , nnnnnnno different test, I always suspected hypoxia was something like alcohol induced stupor just easier to recover?
  4. There had been a protracted discussion on the AOPA form about this , and of course heated discussion. One camp says "can't be avoided" . I live in the camp of "I don't need a transponder to fly". However I realize this is not reality for everyone. http://forums.aopa.org/showthread.php?t=71991
  5. I think at one time they placed little wrens teeth around the spinner to pump air into the inlet ,maybe to reduce the HP required from the fan inside the cowl.

  7. This link states only ten left flying. http://mooneypfm.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=67&Itemid=72
  8. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think a gear up landing has to be reported. With no injuries or fatalities I think the last thing I read was don't bother us with the inevitable. It's possible that a prop strike would not meet the requirement for reporting as well.
  9. Quote: Becca It turns out the Yak flew the whole race with his gear down and then when he came into land, he put the gear up. Yes, that confused.
  10. Quote: Skywarrior There was another list of rules for pilots back then. One of them proscribed wearing spurs while flying. Chuck M.
  11. Should I placard my Mooney with this? Do not spin this aircraft. If the aircraft does enter a spin it will return to earth without further attention on the part of the aeronaut. — first handbook issued with the Curtis-Wright flyer.
  12. If you had left the gear down, I would assume it was just your good sportsmanship! Nothing like a fair flight!
  13. I'm thinking you are right about mis-timing your run. I quickly looked up the 201 on pilot friend and was wondering if you had left the gear down? I once raced a sailboat for 24 hours came in second to a boat that won two awards; first place and the boat on the course the longest. Handicapping is madness sometimes. We finished two and a half hours BEFORE he did!

  15. The other purpose for the ICE for ballast and keeping the fuel cool and moving the center of gravity aft is: The BEER in the baggage compartment would be just right for the after race festivities! Win ,lose , or draw Nobody likes a conceited winner,or a sore loser, but everyone likes the guy with the coldest beer!
  16. Quote: jetdriven I think I will bring xome jugs and pour the "special Nitro fuel blend" into the wings in front of them. Perhaps put some hazmat stickers on the cans. That would be hilarious.
  17. Now that your ballast is ice bags for cooling fuel and keeping the cabin temps under control with all the vents closed over. (Without breaking the rules or making the aircraft un-airworthy) Work on induction . Cool fuel needs more air, use the thinnest least restricitve air filter you can feel comfortable with. I suspect I would leave mine out if I wanted the ram air effect. A nice stainless screen will keep the June Bugs out and the little ones that get through would serve to seal off heat carb heat inlet to the induction box until needed. At least shave the center portion of a foam filter as thin as possible .
  18. Cool your fuel with bags of ice around the fuel tubing from the tanks. Psych out your competitors by putting bags of ice on the wing to pre cool the fuel in the tanks. Hell ,just for fun bring in ten gallons of fuel that you have left in the freezer , be sure it is in insulated jackets and that your competition sees you pour it in just before the race! Don't tell them what you are doing, they will be so distracted trying to figure it out around the course they will give up time.
  19. Get some of Thinwings sub atomic dimpleling wax. Keep your feet off the rudder pedals, except in the event you need to take off or land.
  20. I was out flying Monday and approaching our field when I heard (one of those real pilot voices) ,"We're 7 minutes out , We'll be needing 300 gallons of fuel , picking up Mr. xxxx, need a quick turn around ". Needless to say I knew he was fast but not a clue from where he would be approaching. I called and reported my position ,which was making a mid field entry from 2 minuutes out. we were at least looking for each other at this point. I called that I would stop my entry to the pattern for him to go ahead, he said (in the real pilot voice) , We're doing 200 Kts just entered downwind, and I saw him at my 10:00. Needless to say I was gear down, slowing down to pattern speed, and easily fell in behind him. I called , that I had him in sight and would TRY to SLOW my MOONEY down to stay behind him as number two to land. Actually there was no danger that I could overtake his jet airplane but I felt the legend of MOONEY SPEED deserved to be perpetuated!
  21. Good Luck with your radio! __________________
  22. Quote: Fastbyk Sleepingsquirrel, I no longer have a wife so having the second income isn't a possibilty. (she made a great income too!) Somehow I don't think she would consider marrying me again to support the Mooney.
  23. To answer your question: What's the difference between a want and a need? Now that you have what you WANT. (a Mooney) You will NEED your wife to get a better job. (more money) I hope you enjoy your Mooney as much as I enjoy mine! I told my wife that if she could just get that second job. I could afford a newer airplane, she was not amused!
  24. Hi, I had a similar problem with the CDI twitching ,intermittently working. There are two cam operated micro switches just behind the front cover. One of them was like 2.8 ohms when closed ,should have been 0 ohms. Replaced the bad switch ,no more problems! Don't ask me how I know I guess the Radio Fairy visited just after the Compass Fairy .
  25. I had my planes moved into the hangar for Wednesdays storm. I still drove over to the airport on the way home only to find a couple of AN-2s had taxied (under wind power and no one at the controls)about a half to three quarters of a mile from their tie down. I know the tails were staked down with three one inch rebar driven into the ground. One of them got tangled in a taxi way drain the other left tracks through a muddy cotton field. A Cessna 150 and a 172 on tie down looked as if nothing had occured. These storms were fierce! I watched them march across North alabama on NOAA radar. Sure glad to have had mine in the hangar because a local Community College had lost lots of sheet metal roofing across the ramp. Weather underground (HSV) recorded 76 MPH winds feeding one of these tornadoes. About 11:45 the weather station at my field was blown away. We just got power back today, Sunday. I had turned my breaker off to keep things under control at my house when the power came back, I'm thinking now that I'm off the grid I'll just leave the damn thing off! I'm just now seeing some of the damage on televison , there are so many affected by this from loss of life , loved ones missing, property damage, one of my co workers had his home wiped off the face of the earth! I've been lucky ,seriously thinking of building a storm cellar. I work in a regional trauma center , helicopters were off and on the roof nearly non stop last Thursday & Friday ,we accepted about 76 victims of these storms. We were on emergency generators for about 48 hours and based on the utility reports were having diesel trailers brought on site plus more portable generators. Our Utility workers worked many miracles both large and small to restore power to vital services quickly. We are still running emergency power and helping ease the strain as power is slowly being restored to the community. Not Katria but tragic none the less. People are finding debris from as far away as 135 miles away! Heck one fellow was telling that he had seen a frog turned inside out by this storm! http://www.wunderground.com/history/...q_statename=NA
