Traffic Alerting Experience?
AlexR replied to FullyArticulate's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Interested in a ATD-300. The only thing I am waiting on is a review of the ARINC 429 connection. Has anybody interfaced their unit to a GNS 430/530? How does that work? What does the traffic screen look like? Any pictures? Many thanks in advance. -
Economically it may make sense, but you would be taking a perfectly good (great, based on your description) classic Mooney out of the inventory...which just seems wrong. A 61 B is irreplaceable...you can still buy a new Bonanza. I suspect you could sell it in less than 6 months if you are willing to take 30K.

I once owned a B55...what a sweet flying airplane...fast and perfect control harmony. Miss it very much, except for during annual or when a conti cylinder would crump or bladder tank would bust. @576 the guy in the hangar next to mine has a 58P. A jerk in a jet banged up his windshield (rocks), it was over 20k to replace (other guys insurance)! His rear side window busted out last week. 3-5k (out of pocket) to replace and 8-10 week wait...no thanks!

good place to fly in on the east coast this weeken
AlexR replied to bd32322's topic in General Mooney Talk
The new runway at TGI is now 2400ft. Very smooth. The town is charging a $10 landing few to pay for the renovations. You pay at the trailer at the airport entrance or stuff the bill in the honor box. The island baked crab at Lorraine's is excellent. -
Becca - Per Texas press, NOW and several Gay, Lesbian and Trans-gender groups have called for his dismissal based on his "hate speech". Some went as far as saying they "fear for their lives flying on SWA" if the guy is not fired...please...as if this guy wants to kamakazi the plane in because he has women and homosexuals aboard. That is just plain stupid. These groups make there money by making minorities into victims rather than empowering them. In your first post you wrote about male airline pilots as "cavemen" and "heathens" who require "public and rigid disciplining." As a male and former 121 pilot I could be offended by your "hate speech" against my 'group.' If you wrote that at work, should you be fired for "verbally abusing" me? Of course not, I respect your point of view. But, as you can see, its a very slippery slope...Cheers. Caveman. I hope he gets fired. I am sure he's not the only one who has expressed these sentiments just the only one stupid enough to get recorded doing it on the job, but maybe a public and rigid disciplining will be a lesson to other pilots to get their act together and stop behaving like heathens.

Don't get me wrong. I personally believe an employer should have the right to terminate an employee without cause. If the airline wants to fire him for poor judgement, fine...have at it. My beef is with 'advocacy groups' calling for him to be be fired for what he said and what he thinks. The guy is a sexist jerk, but he should not be fired for offending a minority group in what he thought was a private conversation, vice having a verbal discussion with a member of said group, or officially commenting on the matter while on the employers clock...taking someones means/employment over an accidental airing of his thoughts, no matter how backward and offensive, treads on free speech. Now, that is not to say that his co-workers should not shun him so he leaves on his own...he has to live with what he said. @ Rob - Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness *(as stated in the DOI and enshired in the BORs).

Shadrach has got it perfectly. We have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness...nothing in there about the right to never be offended by others. The guy is a jerk but we can't allow the use of little incidents like this to gradually steal away are freedom of speech. As a nation we have gone from "I disagree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it" to "fire him because he offended my fragile sensibilities in a conversation I was not party to." Get over it. Living well is the best revenge.

Flying down to Miami for father's day followed by some needed R&R in the Bahamas (MYCB).

Here, Here! Putting our collective heads in the sand is a sure course to having to trade in our mooneys for ultralights...ala Europe.

I have an STEC-30 with GPSS roll steering in my C model and love it. Simple, reliable and effective.

I will be there in 75V. Planning to arrive on Sunday and depart Friday. Will camp at the north 40 and pray for no thunder boomers!

My longest flight in my M20C has been Williamsburg, VA to Ormond Beach, FL. Then flew on to the Bahamas via Ft. Lauderdale. Currently planning a trip from Key West to San Jose, Costa Rica via Belize. Gotta love the Mooney efficiency!

Quote: 201-FLYER Ok I'm a commercial rated pilot and have been flying for over 15 years. I've owned two Mooney's a J and now a K. I've heard alot of things in my time especially about Mooney's but never anything like this. So I have to ask the question....why in the wild wild west would you want to run your tank dry? What if the other tank's fuel line becomes clogged or blocked for example... then your SOL. These are the thing that NTSB accident reports are made of. I'm not trying to insult anyones flying or judgement making ability but I just don't get it.

Congrats on the move. I would recommend Mid-Atlantic Aviation at Williamsburg (JGG). The owner, Kevin, previously worked for a MSC and he has all the specialized tools. Has worked on my Mooney for the past two years and nothing but good things to say about him and his team. -A

Panels-Hey Pre-J Drivers. Submit a panel shot...
AlexR replied to scottfromiowa's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Following up on my previous post in this thread, I re-mounted my 496 under the throttle quadrant as seen below. Was quite easy to do using a standard Ram mount; only required removing and reinstalling on bolt from the throttle friction lock system. It is easy to see but out of the way.... -

36V, Did you get your light yet from Aircraft Spruce? They told me it will ship in 5-10 days.... -
What caught my eye in the aviation consumer article was the following line "The ATD-300 can display on panel-mounts, such as Garmin 430/530s and Aspen PFD/MFDs." The Monroy website does not say this but does mention that the unit outputs R232 serial data. If it does display on Garmin/Aspen, I would difinitely be in the market for one. Does anybody who owns a unit have the install manual handy?
-
Does the ATD-300 show traffic on the garmin 430 display? Latest issue of aviation consumer says it does, but think that may be an error.
-
Thanks for the pictures! I often wondered what happend to the plastic interior trim. Now I know. About how many hours did the install take?
-
Also very interested in doing the Southwest Texas 201 windshield mod on my 70 M20C and would also be interested to know if others have noted an increase in ventilation in the cabin. Also, what happens to the plastic trim up top on the ceiling after the sheet metal above the windshield is cut out? Pics would be most appreciated. Thanks!

I check the simple stuff first. This includes the tension on your alternator belt as well as check for signs it is slipping or the pulley is no longer aligned because the bracket is loose. From there, check the current and resistance on field to the alternator with a multimeter. Not the alternator's fault if the field is bad (bad ground/connection or failing breaker). If that is good, my guess is the carbon brushes and/or slip rings in the alternator are going bad or the regulator is shot. You can get the alternator IRANed instead of overhauled, if it is the just the brushes, it will be around $200. A new regulator is about $300. Good luck.

Quote: flight2000 Wow, love those yokes! Try the center post mount for the 496. I recently moved mine and now wonder why I went a year before moving it. Brian edit: Now I see the vertical card would have to be moved up a little higher on the post to get the 496 below it. It'll be interesting to see what you come up with. -

Mooney flying for Christmas or New Years
AlexR replied to MooneyMitch's topic in General Mooney Talk
Heading to the Bahamas in 75V for Christmas and New Years, if the weather cooperates. Merry Christmas! -
I am based at JGG but fly to TTN once a month to visit family. Have admired your Mooney more than once there on the Ronson ramp. Very sorry and hope it all works out for the best. I lost a plane in Hurricane Andrew, so know what you must be feeling. If the insurance company totals it, you may get a chance to buy back some of your avionics of install in your replacement ride. Good luck.
