  2. The plane sold within a month. Many here have posted on the positive experience they had buying from Jimmy at All American. I echo that on the seller side.   4. Exactly, many times I thought of moving up instead of upgrading my C. But after achieving the dispatch reliability and trust in my current plane, I did not want to risk inheriting a hangar queen. Not worth the risk for 5 inches of leg room and 5-7 knots.
  5. Oscar, The speedbrakes were installed prior to my purchase. That said, I really do think they are a worthwhile investment for my type of flying. I go to the Bahamas a lot and the speed brakes help me stay high without pissing off ATC. For example, rather than start a decent from 10,000ft 50 miles out, I can stay high until 25 miles from an island...I stay in radar coverage and have more options should the engine go quiet. Have also come in handy in the mountains in Northern Mexico, geting me down without having to circle, after crossing a high ridge. Finally, the brakes have saved me a few times from having to go missed on an approach due to ATC providing bad vectors that would not have allowed me to otherwise slow down to get dirty. In 90% of cases it is far more efficient to decend without the brakes, but they come in handy in many unique scenarios. If my next Mooney does not have them, I would strongly consider adding them.   10. I also change my oil every 25hrs and replace the filter at every 50hrs (cutting and inspecting). Can you explain exactly why not changing the filter every time is not a good idea? Rather than giving my engine old oil for 50 hrs I refresh it at half the interval which gives me a chance to get my oil analyized twice as often (providing a more accurate trend). It also gets the cowl off the engine so I can check for leaks, wear, and anything else that may be going awry. I see no need to replace the filter at an crazy low interval as it would be counter productive and would INCREASE ENGINE WEAR. When you replace the filter, you leave a near half quart gap in the pressurized oil system. This means you wont have oil pressure for nearly double the time upon start up. Most engine wear takes place at start up. Changing the filter while it is still working fine (25hrs) and starting is equal to starting your engine at 20F without preheat....IHMO.

The mechanic had not assembled the intake air box correctly and at 200 ft. after takeoff, an aluminum spacer was sucked through a brand new cylinder. It was about 3/8 inch dia when it started and was reduced to pcs by the valves. Along the way impacting the sparkplug electrodes bending them shut. After the initial shock and a scan of the gages I flew a VERY close pattern and landed without problem. Climbed about 700 ft altittude with 2 people and full fuel in one of the most underpowered 200 hp lycoming aircraft built. larry
  15. Don't know if it is true, but according to Aviation Consumer...there is really only one grade of Oxygen which is low humidity. I all come from the same sources in the same tanker trucks. Per Aviation Consumer, medical oxygen is humidified at the hospital by passing the oxygen through water. They say welders, aviation, and medical are all the same and can be used....for what its worth.
  16. There is a subtle difference between the terms nation and state. We are a state with no official religion and protections for all faiths, that was established initially by a Christian nation. We are now a state with many nations...which has its positives and negatives. The founders clearly were religious men, but they were also clearly in favor of separation of church and state. Many of them were also masons and men of sience who believed in reconciling science and faith (look up the meaning of G in the mason seal)...in my humble opinion, the majority of the founders would not agree with intelligent design or that the world is 3000 years old when there is overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary. I do agree with your notion that the bill of rights gives us freedom OF religion, not FROM freedom. Everyone, politicians included, should be allowed to express their religious believes and display religious symbols...but as a tax payer...I dont want to pay for a government Christmas tree at the Whitehouse as much as I don't want to pay for a Ramadan/EID banquet at the Department of Agriculture.
  17. We are a nation founded on Christian principals with provisions for separation of church and state and protections for those who practice other faiths. That is not a Christian state. Saudi Arabia is an Islamic state. I don't think its fair to lump us in with them...at least not yet.

While I would usually agree that bringing up the gear and then having to get it down manually (in severe clear VFR) would not be too challenging, in this case the short field arrival has me siding with the 'keep the gear down' crowd. I would save as much juice as possible for getting the gear and full flaps back up in a hurry if you have go around at a short strip with obstacles. While our Mooneys will climb a bit with gear and full flaps, the increase in interoccular-anal pressure would be alot to handle. Land with the Master on just in case...gives you the option to get cleaned up in a hurry and ensures your gear and stall warning horns are backing you up. Remember to pull your alternator field circuit breaker...should save you a few amps, and if you have a short circuit somwhere between that breaker and the alternator and regulator, it will decrease the chances of an in flight electrical fire. Label the alternator 'INOP' in the off chance you get ramp checked...the electrical system is not required for day VFR under part 91 but anything inop needs to labeled as such. After start up, check your amp load, if your electrical problem is a stuck starter (very high amp load) it will kill the entire system in a minute or two (Master on). Finally, I much rather freeze my butt off getting the battery out so can charge it overnight than deal with an unknown quantity in the air. Just my two cents.

  21. Greetings, I have a 1970 M20C. Yes, all lights (gear, voltage, and vac) should light up when you press the button and the master is on. If your gear lights are working but the rest are not, check your breaker panel as gear warning lights are on a separate breaker than the 'annunciator lights.' Could also be a lose connection behind the breaker. Otherwise, you may have a bad or disconnected switch or something as simple as a bad ground. If it is just the vac lights that are giving you problems (the low vac light should be on with the master on and the engine off), you can check the connections to the sensor. mine is mounted to the back case of the attitude indicator. It has four wires: power, ground, low, and high. Hope this helps. -A
  22. Logistically, that will be a tough trip. All above applies plus on you way back from Central America, Mexico will only allow you to land at two airports to clear...cozumel and one other I cant remember. You should join CaribbeanSkyTours.com. They have the latest info. My I suggest you consider flying to Key West, Fl and launching from there? The flight to MZBZ hugging the Cuban coast to the VINKA intersection and then on to CZM should be just about 4 hours in your plane. I have done it many times and would rather deal with ditching in the gulf with a raft and a plb than the mexican desert and narcobandits. Just my 2cents.
  23. Just awful. The below happened at my home field yesterday. Shows how evening hitting a parking garage can be survivable if you stay in control. The pilot and his neice walked away without a scratch. Despite what the press implies, the plane did not run out of fuel.   24. Guys, Thanks for the feedback. I understand the difference between a VFR and IFR install of a GPS. My question relates more to the following: I have seen plenty of folks on this forum own Mooneys with GNS 430s in the right stack. A WAAS install requires that the left side of the unit be 11.8 inches from the cener of the AI in order to avoid remote annuciation. The non-WAAS version of the install manual was not as precise and simply says the unit has to be in the pilot's field of view. As such, if anybody has a non-WAAS 430 on the right, IFR certified, without annuciators...pls contact me as I would like to get an idea of how it was written up/justified in the 337/field approval. Many thanks. ps. for those that really like the KX-155s for back up, I will be putting mine up for sale very soon...it works great and comes with a KI-209 indicator...more to follow in the for sale forum.
