  1. Congrats on your first successful IFR experience. I thought I was the only one left in the Mooney World that doesn't have or use an autopilot. Maybe we should start a sans autopilot club. I flew my buddy's J model Sunday coming back from the Mooney Homecoming. The three hours of IFR (all on AP) made me realize how rusty my handflying skills would get if I relied on the autopilot for every IFR flight.
  2. I did a soft field once. Two pumps of flaps, apply enough back pressure to keep the front wheel skimming the ground as the controls become effective, slowly release back pressure when airborne to accelerate in ground effect, positive rate of climb, retract gear and trim for climb. Wasn't worth the hour of washing the mud off!!! Mud in wheel wells, step, belly, bottom of flaps, top and bottom of tail surfaces. Never again. ZANE: BTW I went to High School in Camdenton. Moved to Springfield my senior year. Nice little town.
  3. Never believe what the media is selling and never judge another by what has been reported. According to the media, I died in a Cessna 172 in 1978 in a neighboring state during a weekend trip. To say the least, my coworkers and boss were speechless when I walked through the door three days later. I didn't even know I was dead until they told me! Steve, I wish you and your wife a speedy recovery. Having escaped a burning plane myself, the best thing is to get back in the air as soon as possible. Best regards!!!
  4. When discussing with the FAA, the discussion focused more around having the correct length and size. McFarlane sends you a form to fill out concerning the type of cable you desire. I enclosed the form with the old cable and sent to them. When I received it back I gave the A&P the part and the documentation above so he would ensure to document the part correctly. I have vernier on my mixture and prop controls.
  5. Couldn't find my previous post. Here is the copy of the email I spoke of from the FSDO. I had my part made by McFarlane. From: David.F.Hall@faa.gov [mailto:David.F.Hall@faa.gov] Sent: Friday, December 09, 2011 9:23 AM To: Charles Jones Subject: Owner Produced Part Charles: I have accomplished some additional research concerning your question about a replacement engine control cable for your Mooney: Yes you can have a part manufactured and classify it as an "owner produced part" as identified in FAR 21.9 (a)(5), which is attached. There is a process that must be followed and it is identified in Advisory Circular 20-62E which is attached. Its not very difficult or hard to comply with. (see Advisory Circular 20-62E, paragraph 4(n)) You stated to me during our conversation that you were aware of a manufacturing facility that produces similar cables for other makes of general aviation aircraft. I believe you will be well within regulatory compliance with the requirements for an "owner produced" part if you complied with the following list of actions: a) You are the legal owner of the aircraft. You remove the cable from your aircraft to be used as a sample to manufacturer a new cable. c) Provide the cable the cable manufacturer you referenced in our conversation as a sample for the manufacture of a new cable. (Providing the manufacturer of the cable to use as a sample would satisfy the owners participation responsibility of Advisory Circular 20-62E). d) Install the new cable in your aircraft by a person authorized to approve the aircraft for return to service after the installation. The maintenance log entry for the new cable should indicate that the cable installed is an owner produce part in accordance with FAR 21.9. We believe if you follow the above guidance, you will have complied with all of the FAA regulatory requirements to classify the new cable as an "owner produced part". Additionally having the cable manufactured by a manufacturer who is experienced in manufacturing similar cables for other type certificated aircraft will assure your aircraft is returned to service in a condition that is equal or better than its original condition (FAR 43.13) David F. 6. Do a search for owner produced parts I put on here back in December 2011. There is a copy of the email from my local FSDO citing the regs and the legal way you can do it and how it must be documented. You will have to do your part but your A&P will need to install and enter in logbook with the proper verbage.

  8. Thank you. That was the type of info I was looking for. Sometimes the accident reports are vague in what happened and don't provide any clues to the type of damage. What is the asking price?
  9. I wouldn't question it if it was a typical gear up landing.
  10. Considering it crashed while buzzing a house at low altitude, yes, I think that is a fair question...even after 36 years.
  11. What repairs had to be made after the crash in 1976?
  12. When I went through AOPA they got me financing through Pilot Bank in Tampa, FL. I got 1/2% discount for doing automatic payment.
  13. Ed Morris in Little Rock is very good. I don' know what he charges but he does travel to his clients location. He owns a 201 and has 38,000+ hours TT. PM me if interested and I will get his contact information sent to you.
  14. Don't forget to check insurance requirements!!!!!
  15. If you aren't intimidated by a 2600 foot grass strip you should consider spending the night at Beaumont, KS. After landing, you taxi on a county road a couple hundred yards to Main Street. Be sure to stop at the stop sign before parking next to the oldest wooden water tower. http://beaumonthotelks.com/
  16. http://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/airmen/test_questions/media/ira.pdf Try this link as it was updated June 12, 2012.
  17. Be extremely careful going into Gaston's. One way in and one way out. They have a lot of accidents there. Watch for the dip about half way down the runway. I was on vacation on the white river a couple of weeks ago and they had a Lake Renegade lose control and crashed while landing on the runway. Took off a fourth of the left wing and bent the right wingtip up. Also, watch for density altitude as you are in a valley and have a certain corridor to follow. Three or four years ago, a Lance crashed on takeoff (June or July) and killed several people.
  18. To augment the air coming from the vent above, we have a collapsible camping fan that runs on D batteries. When it is just my wife and I, we set it on top of a headset bag in the back seat and shoot the air forward. At 9,000 feet in the summer I have had to turn off or put on low setting because my wife was getting cold. It is a cheap way of moving air in the cabin.
  19. I have a C model and to tell you the truth I would have to land after 4 1/2 hours max (kidney/bladder range) so I might as well fly fast. I have played around with 19 in/1950 rpm and got 105 knots. I wasn't able to check the fuel burn as my tanks were 3/4 full on takeoff.
  20. Hot springs, AR. Or fly into Rogers, AR, rent a car and go to Eureka Springs, AR. NW Arkansas also has a large cat sanctuary that has cabins. You can hear the big cats during the night. Or Petit Jean State Park, AR has campground for fly-in guests and they may have a lodge as well. Memorial Day weekend, Little Rock has their Riverfest that includes a lot of concerts. Get a room at the Peabody overlooking the river.
  21. No problem. Glad to help a fellow Mooniac!!

  23. I have an Aera 510 and love the Wm weather/radio features. I put my 295 on my wife's yoke so she had something to watch and play with. I personally couldn't justify the added expense for the 560. The money I saved went to my WingX Pro/georeferencing subscriptions. I think I have most of the same capabilities at a lesser cost. Of course, mine is stand alone and not streaming data to other devices. I would be interested to hear why everyone selected the 560 over the 510.
  24. One easy way is fly from Crestview VOR to Eglin Field 2 to White Point then follow the bridge across the bay then turn right to KDTS. Or, you can do it the easy way and file IFR.
  25. Dropbox and CloudOn will help achieve your goal. CloudOn gives you the ability to create and edit Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. You can read PDFs in your Dropbox. Anything created in CloudOn automatically saves in Dropbox. If you want to read PDFs when wifi isn't available, open in iBooks and it saves the document to your bookshelf to read at your convenience. Both apps are free.
