  1. Quote: jetdriven We all know those old books in 1977 lie, but this is 34 years later. You know we didnt tape any doors, vents, scoops, seams or gaps, had misrigged ailerons, droopy nose gear doors, crappy antennas, forward CG, overfueled, ball not centered, hell, we didnt even polish, wax it or take the tiedown rings out. This on 200 HP, 18 GPH, and CHT's of 360. I have a few things planned for the next race, as you can see.

  3. Quote: Becca Got the official correction in as : 184.29mph 160.14kts I want my money back, I bought a 201, I thought it was supposed to go 201 mph!!
  4. When they wrap the side panels in leather and add so many other features to your interior, do they redo the weight and balance? Do you loose much useful load?
  5. Are they worth the $200 MAPA is asking for them? I'm thinking maybe yes, but I never attended one of his seminars and now I guess I won't be, so I'm not sure how good they are.
  6. Quote: Becca Check out the air race photos here: http://www.sportairrace.org/id407.html It turns out the Yak flew the whole race with his gear down and then when he came into land, he put the gear up. Yes, that confused. We heard informally from the race coordinator that my time was off by 10 minutes (entered incorrectly in the spreadsheet). That means it should have been 47:26, which would have put my average speed at 153 kts (177 mph).
  7. Quote: FlyDave If this is the same ducting as a "J" then LASAR has it for a rediculously low price. Call them and see if it's the same or if they've found something else.
  8. I can't see how they can claim an alteration to the airframe at all. You can easily go back to the incandecent bulb. It's more like switching from one brand of tire to another. As long as both meet specs, what's the deal?
  9. Quote: Urs_Wildermuth So what is the thing about understanding the trim for the 30? I gather it requires the airplane to be trimmed when you engage it and to monitor the trim lights and act accordingly? That is what I took from the manual, anything else you can share? I really would like to know about this.

  11. Quote: allsmiles I called Garmin about this. Their position is that the FCC and FAA don't realy communicate. What else is new, it's the government! But he did indicate that it would not be allowed to interfere noting that there are a lot of GPS users including the miitary and commercial operators. He did also indicate that it's the government and they can do anything they want! I take that to mean they can even take down GPS satellites! But I don't see them allowing interference with navigational GPS signals.
  12. Quote: scottfromiowa Good idea...(washers). I will bounce this off the installer. Thanks for the suggestion. Scott
  13. Quote: Lowbid So my whole reason for spending a little more now is I would rather keep my next plane a LONG, LONG time rather than upgrade again five years from now. With fuel costs increasing, it just seems that Mooney has the best performance for fuel dollars spent.
  14. If the OP has $100,000, I'd go for the latest and best equipted J that money can buy. The only things I can think of that could be argued in favor of the F over the J is manual gear, hydraulic flaps and retractable step. These features are only found on some '66 to '68 Fs, but not all. I think in '69 they went to standard electric gear and flaps and fixed the step. Also Fs have a slightly better view over the panel. Other than these things, the J really is new, improved and faster in almost every way and you won't regret owning it at all. If I'd had the money, I would have gone J. On the other hand, I really do like my F and have no regrets.
  15. Quote: RJBrown The current all the eggs in one basket mentality scares me.
  16. I only use mine above 5000 ft, but I don't have a real 201 cowl, so it does boost at least one full inch, sometimes a tiny bit more. For me, it's free performance.
  17. It's a tough one. Trust me I know. My wife has flown with me, but really does not care for the experience. She fully supports me and my flying so that's cool, but she really doesn't want to go along. I leave it entirely up to her. I don't try to pressure her in any way to go along. So far, I owned my plane nearly a year now and she has yet to set foot in it. My wife likes what airplanes can do for her, meaning get to places we want to go fast, but does not like the process or anxiety of flying. She does not do well with uncertainty either. If I can't guarantee we leave at a certain time and return at certain time, she will choose drive or airlines. Having a significant other that isn't thrilled with GA does cut the utility of your airplane way back. I guess on the bright side, I might live longer because I don't often feel the pressure of gotta get there itis. This condition afflicts pilots that try to run their own personal airline and often results in their demise.
  18. Quote: jsimmons619 To date LightSquared's answer is that "adequately filtered GPS systems will have no problem".
  19. Checked out the link. Looks like fun for sure. I will eagerly watch the results. I however, don't have enough money at this time to endeavour in racing. Certified aircraft engines just cost way too much to fix and rebuild. Somehow, flogging my engine at low altitude doesn't sound like I'm going to make TBO. Racing of any kind always costs you. At this time I will have to be a spectator. Please post all the results of your exploits and the races.
  20. I think the entire aviation community is hoping and praying that the pressure brought on by the iPad and ForeFlight will force Garmin to lower the cost of their updates. Garmin and Jeppesen's lock on the market has finally been compromised. I am surprised that AirGizmo hasn't come out with a panel dock for the iPad. Maybe it's because Apple doesn't seem to want to commit to a product for more than about 6 months.
  21. I had to go look it up. I had never heard of LightSquared before. Sounds like we get 4G wireless broadband everywhere in the country, but... spotty or unreliable GPS signals?? How is this going to fly? Definately, anybody living in the area with access to an aiplane needs to get out there and check it out, then report.
  22. Quote: Mooney20J_Driver Whelen STC for the 14V and 28 volt PAR46 is signed as of 4 May 2011. They have different part numbers for 14V and 28V. Spruce has these item in their online catalog for roughly $310 Seaton Engineering has a STC for Wig Wag mode switch that works with one (most Mooney aircraft) and two lamp systems. Roughly $200. Will require a 337 to be accomplished.
  23. My F is at 1747 right now on paper. Don't know the last time it was actually weighed. My new panel job might change it a little, but I'm expecting it to be pretty much a wash.
