  1. If it's any consolation, most J's have this problem. I think there was an STC for a center support rib that was designed to reinforce the top cowling and prevent the spider cracking. Not sure who owns it. Have your paint guy beef up the cowling as mentioned, then repaint it. Should only set you back a few hundred bucks I would guess.
  2. Quote: DaV8or Seems like a pretty cool box and at an attractive price. I wonder if it works with the JPI 700?
  3. Wow, congrats! Welcome to freedom. Enjoy the high-- it's a great place to be. You made me think of my first solo. So focused on take-off, then just after turning downwind I looked over at the empty seat next to me and thought "uh-oh" followed by a smile. Sort of felt the same way with my first Mooney solo.
  4. My understanding is that plane plastics does not make the modern round window trim-- only plastics for early model Js. Let me know if you hear otherwise.
  5. Quote: flight2000 Short answer is yes. I didn't have time to chase a lot of aircraft and I checked several references before using his service. I have nothing but good things to say about the experience. Little disorganized on the website, but once you figure out where everything is, it's a gold mine of information. His services didn't cost me anything and the price was right. Brian
  6. Quote: KLRDMD Also, Robert Gary is a CFI and owns either an E or F model Mooney. He's in California, I think northern, but I'm not sure exactly where.
  7. The great wingtip shortage of 2010! IMHO, this is one of the few retrofits for early model Js worth the money. LASAR indicated to me that they would have a new batch of wingtips made up in about three months (maybe you have updated information). I've also got an MSC on the lookout at salvage yards, but no hits yet-- I guess our Mooneys are quite airworthy, or the wingtips are easily damaged in a crash (or hangar fire!). I've also been patiently waiting for the Acclaim "mini-fins" --Bill Eldred from Mooney stated in Plane & Pilot Magazine that they would be available for retrofit on older Mooneys, but the slow economy has certainly stalled this potential STC. And you could always go with OEM parts, which will cost you a small fortune even before installation.
  8. Quote: testwest Good training has really brought down the Aerostar accident rate. Right now the safest twins over the last couple of years are 1) the MU-2 and 2) the Aerostar. The reason is you don't get insurance on either one unless you go through what is essentially equivalent to type rating training, and to the ATP standards of performance.
  9. Wow. I got a bit choked up when I first saw the photos you posted. I too will be will be dropping off my Mooney to the mechanic before a trip overseas-- now with heightened paranoia. Best of luck with your search.
  10. Brian- Your plane has come a long way since you purchased last year. Congrats-- it looks beautiful. I'm also happy you shared the information about the 2" N numbers (antiques!). I've been struggling for several weeks on how to design mine (slant forward, slant back, no slant at all, etc.). This may be the way I'll end up going too. These nuggets of info make Mooneyspace a great place to dwell
  11. Hi Jolie-- just tried to register, but the site says registration is closed. If this is a mistake, can you advise? Thanks!
  12. Quote: skyking I generally lower the nose and reduce the MP at 1" per minute to avoid cooling off too fast. i try and keep it at 500-600 FPM desent.
  13. Was wondering the same thing... until I found that the exchange rate is nearly dead even with our friends to the north. So, how much is tattoo removal?... maybe i can net a few extra bucks here
  14. Just a thought... maybe your nose-low attitude is contributing to the gain in TAS?

  16. Baggage door light on? --the bane of many Mooney owners. Not sure if you have an auto-shut off (or maybe you've had it removed all together).
  17. Quote: FlyDave Yes - based at EMT. I have quite a few friends that fly the CalTech/JPL club planes.
  18. Sweet!! Nice ride, Dave! And just in time for all the fun Mooney events coming up. "Oh, the places you'll go!" Congratulations! (BTW- are you based at KEMT? I learned to fly there with the caltech/JPL flying club years ago-- lots of fond memories departing special VFR because of "haze" )

  20. Thanks for the report. If you don't mind, post a picture-- I'd like to see how you have it mounted on the panel. (And don't worry... someone here will jump on the soapbox about LOP operations soon enough)

  22. I was quoted 20-22 hours labor for de novo installation of a JPI 830 from an MSC.
  23. Quote: Mitch Great news here! AOPA's Bill Dunn, Vice President, Local Airport Advocacy is coming to the March 17th opening presentation meeting! This is a great asset to this issue. If you can come, please do!

  25. Quote: mooneygirl I was so happy to see 18-20 pilots attend the supervisors meeting today. As Mitch indicated, they were resounding in their contempt for the idea of shutting down Oceano Aiport. The potential developer, Jeff Edwards, spoke during public comment. I did as well. I believe this is the correct link for the audio/video, but the meeting is still in progress. http://slocounty.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=2
