  1. For what it's worth, I flew at 2850 lbs today with myself and 2 CFI friends who were evaluating me for my pending CFI ride Friday. Temp 10 dC, altimeter 30.04. Was getting 900 feet/minute wide open throttle, 2700 RPM passing through 1500' MSL. 2900 lbs can be a dog at 100dF in the summer. It's useful when you need it though. At a 5000'-7000' density altitude I was lucky to keep 500-600'/minute fully loaded.
  2. Yup...just make sure the people who re-mark your airspeed indicator actually care or else your plane could be sitting in the shop for 3 weeks. Whole thing cost me less than $700 or $800 in parts, labor, log entires, POH info and guys like Jimmy Garrison claim it's $3000 in value to the airframe...
  3. Gary I found the one I was looking for. It's on Docket's Mooney M20S. http://www.mooneyspace.com/index.cfm?mainaction=memberdetails&member=15
  4. Somebody here has done the 696 work and associated panel surgery. For what it's worth, it's an M20F with a 252 style panel....
  5. Hey Gary did your first registration (glayne) not work? I had the same issue with mine a while back...
  6. Yes, be careful about planes that have flown few hours in the preceeding year(s). However, for what it's worth, mine's been nearly trouble free for 200 hours after I bought it this last February. It had flown about 50 hours in the preceeding 4 years. Granted, I did plenty of due diligence. If it's been active every year until just this last one, I wouldn't worry too much if there's good reason for the seller to sell and good reason for you to buy.
  7. You could take a chance with this one and hope you could get a couple years out of the engine...Say if you could get it for $65k, you'd be $15k under max budget with another $13k or so to save for overhaul time...maybe you could stretch the engine over a couple years. 1978 M20J, Garmin 480, Garmin SL30.
  8. I've heard good words about both of the TX shops in question. If you decide to go to McKinney, let me know. I'm going to be in Addison and Fort Worth at least 2-3 times between now and February. Also I'm getting my panel redone in Addison at a newer shop up there. They are pretty small but they've matched a quote on what I wanted done at Hartsell Avionics in Tyler. Reason I chose them is they are closer to Waco than Tyler and a CFI friend of mine works for the charter company that owns the shop. I saw they did a good job on a couple Aspen installs. I'll be going G500, GNS430W, SL30, GDL69. Got a good deal on an installed price in contract. I don't know about their autopilot work though.
  9. Quote: MHale I'm out of town this week but I am definitely interested. I'll PM you to try and set up a date.
  10. Quote: defrkm20j Hi Parker, I am a german M20J owner. My airplane is based in in old germany. However I am also flying the big jets and sometimes have some layover in Houston. I would love to go out flying . If there is a possibility please let me know. Maybe we can get together. I own a J3C as well. It´s my little grasshopper Happy new year Axel
  11. There have been a couple requests in the past few months for Houston area members to get a feel for the M20 airframe. My M20J is at KIWS (West Houston Airport) right now if any of you still need to get a feel for it. I'll be at the airport tomorrow (Wednesday) sometime in the late morning or early afternoon if anyone wants a quick sit/ride. After that I'm off to KVCT (Victoria) for a little bit of dual in my friend's Piper J-3. Send me an email or message me here and I'll check them both tonight.
  12. Quote: Buster1 Any hints so 231 lookers (like me) may avoid this one?
  13. Quote: Guillaume Anything new ?
  14. I'm having mine removed at my annual inspection in February...not sure if they are 1.5 inch or 3 inch.
  15. Quote: Buster1 Is everyone in Texas okay? I heard Longview and some other parts were hit pretty hard yesterday and last night.
  16. Quote: LFOD Good deal. I need to get stationed in Texas...
  17. Quote: LFOD The seller may resist taking it to a guy like Maxwell. He will undoubtedly uncover everything wrong with the aircraft. If he has been getting pencil whipped annuals for the last few years, it is going to be ugly and he is not going to be happy.... but you will be.
  18. I assume you're leaning rich of peak? How is that EGT in relation to the others +/- dF?
  19. I've got the ones from LASAR and I like them.
  20. Quote: allsmiles I was maybe 135 knots. So the slower the spees the less the descent rate?
  21. Quote: allsmiles Thank you for the reply. No shutter. I know what you mean. This is why this seems odd to me. Usually there is a shutter that gets your attention. In this instance nothing!! I'm thinking the autopilot had the airplane trimmed to hold altitude and it was still at this trim attitude when I deployed the speedbrakes. Does this make any sense??
  22. I don't think it's going to be a function of cold air, but a function of IAS. Temperature means nothing in terms of IAS except for its effect on TAS.
  23. Reading through the logs on my plane, my prop has been on that plane at least once...mine escaped with about 30% less time it looks like...still wouldn't be afraid of that plane with the total time. ER did a good job of keeping mine in good shape...
  24. Find a plane to consider then come here and ask which shop to take it to. Some good ones I can think of off the top of my head: G-Force Aviation (Akron-Canton Airport KCAK in Ohio). I got an annual as my prebuy up there in February. Don Maxwell Aviation in Longview, TX (KGGG). Willmar Air Service in MN. LASAR in California.
  25. Nice! Can't beat that one for an M20J.
