I'm looking into the PF as well. Any pros and/or cons. Is it worth it?

Quote: Bnicolette The only real thing I can think of is the ability of doing a GPS approach? That is the only utility that I can see they would add for me anyhow. Everything else can be done with my Garmin 396/RNAV/iPad. Safely and legally.

Quote: OR75 I would not rely solely on any single piece of equipment (ipad or GNS or KLN or KX or KR or whatever) and leave yourself an out ...

Yeah, it is a lively discussion allright! I love it when people try to talk up the iPad! That somehow it's competition to Garmin's 750! They are either kidding or just plain going against the grain. As if those of us who installed the 750 are plain old know nothing chopped liver! The iPad is excellent for what it is designed to do. Not navigating! It can very quickly transform the friendly skies into no so very friendly!

Quote: aviatoreb I agree mostly allsmiles. I have a garmin aera that I use in my cockpit both as my backup nav, and my source of XM weather. But I also fly with an iPad which I use in a manner that I think it is ideally suited for - as a EFB - electronic flight bag. Essentially an easy to access and quick access source of all things that used to be on paper. Not only can we access charts and plates quickly and flip through them, but since with a GPS they are georeferenced, it is a huge leap from simple paper. But I worry that these devices are not up to snuff for a nav device. I would rather use my aera in the soup if my primary 430W were to go on the blink - or even my VOR needles. I keep my iPad on my knee as a knee board as I would paper which is fine in its role as paper replacement. If it were to be a nav device - it is too big for our panels. I wish there were a half sized iPad - something between an iPhone and iPad size.

You are absolutely right! I think you should report this. Not as punishment but to educate him and others. But if he was arrogant about it maybe he does need an attitude adjustment! There is no good excuse for this! We all make mistakes but entering the wrong frequency, as easy as it is to do sometimes, is inexcusable. He obviously wasn't looking and/or misjudged thinking you'll be clear before him.

This action by this individual points to a deeper issue. He doesn't undestand the seriousness of what he did. He is ignorant. He treated it as if it was his car! I don't think he realizes what he is doing or the potential for disaster! Furthermore it points to perhaps habits that just don't coincide with those of a disciplined pilot. What else did he forget?! It describes a rushed individual in a hurry to get in the air. Forgetting the hedset may be the least of his worries, and he doesn't see it! You may be doing HIM and others a favor by having a talk with someone in charge who can straighten him out! Maybe restrict his priviledges until he completes a safety course or something of this nature.

Quote: Parker_Woodruff Get the gear up. Your engine will fail as a result of time, not your height above the airport. If you lose the engine, having the gear up sooner meant you got some extra altitude. It's the insurance company's plane at that point. Plus, it looks cooler when the gear comes up sooner.

Quote: N4352H Seems to me before you rush to report the poor guy you should examine your own decision making first. Why didn't you see the TBM and initiate a go around? Weren't you looking? Assuming he made an honest mistake with the frequency, which is easy to do by the way many of these CTAF are only one digit off, did you do everything correctly that you want to crucify the guy! No one was hurt, no airplanes were bent and apparently he apologised to you! Leave him alone! We all bear responsibility and should examine our own actions!

Quote: Bennett but if I find some spare pennies, I think I will replace the 430W with a GTN 650. I am already sold on the touch screen interface, and using the 430W, and the 696 seem like ancient technolgy - too many buttons to press, too many knobs to turn, and none of it particularly intuitive.

Quote: N4352H I had this happen to me recently. Ran my 201 off in the weeds at FDK to avoid an AC landing opposite and on the same runway. I had touched down, zero wind and a TBM 700 landed coming right at me. I confronted the pilot once on the ground and then gathered my witnesses. The pilot apologized and said he had the wrong CTAF puched in. I was on the frequencey calling my pattern and I was on the ground first posessing right of way by a wide margin. These should always be reported to your nearest FISDO. Trust me..they really want these documented and enforced. This incident will be a matter of public record within a month or two. The irony? The TBM 700 pilot was an AOPA Air Safety Foundation Visitor. In know...you gotta be kidding...

Quote: Bnicolette Spent all day with my mechanic installing four new lord mounts and cleaning injectors. To my delight when we put the cowl back on, it lined up perfectly with the spinner and the clean air inlet. I elected to change out the lord mounts as there was about a 1/2 inch sag showing and didn't want to just put in shims to raise the engine back up. I had to believe that the MSC that put the engine in 11 years ago had it lined up/shimmed correctly and thanfully that must have been the case. It is perfect now with the new mounts. I am very anxious to fly behind it again and see if I notice a difference with the cleaned injectors and new mounts with the little bit of vibration that I had previously.

Ditto Bennett! Really nice panel! I like the flush mounted JPI. Is this from JPI or something rigged by the shop? How do you use the 430? As #2 totally independent of #1? I guesss you'd have to right because it doesn't talk to the 750 or does it? Very nice! Congratulations and enjoy!

Very well said Don. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is a forum to express and respect different experiences and opinions on things, isn't it? Or is it a merely a place to pretend and pat people on the back by telling them what they want to hear?! It is my sincere hope that we all want it to be the former. Therefore we must not slam and muzzle honest debate because we don't agree with a certain point of view. We all have this obligation to this forum. One thing we can all agree on is that we are a unique group of pilots and Mooney lovers! We are brought together in this forum by our beloved Mooneys and our love of flight! Let's support and be kind to one another. Let's try and learn from other's experiences and try and see another point of view. We may even learn something! I know for my part I'm not perfect and I will be the first one to admit, I do get carried away sometimes. No one should be offended however. I'm sorry if anyone did but they shouldn't be. It is immature and childish to become offended by a different point of view! I will continue to express my opinion and views. I hope also that people who are a lot more experienced and knowledgeable will do the same. I'm on here to learn as much as I can from all the experts and other people's experiences. Personal attacks do not belong here and those who engage in those tactics know who they are and should stop.

Quote: alex Costs being equal somehow I really trust the Garmin more than the Aspen----this was after mooniac had answered your question in great detail. Did you consider the G500 in your desicion process? Also a bigger display is definitly better in my opinion. With the small Aspens I found I had to be directly in front of them. With a bigger area display this wasn't the case. --- um, they are in front of you last time I checked and perhaps all three screens may be a tad, dare I say, BIIGGER than yours. But it's not my choice! Congratulations and enjoy!! ----I wouldn't have done it! congratulations anyways! Aspen is great. I salute them for their efforts. They have done a great job in bringing to market a good product. However they are not, cannot and will never be Garmin. There is only one Garmin!!-----why? because I said so damn it! GPSS is excellent value. Problem is the rest of the box the GPSS comes with! Maybe they are throwing in GPSS as enticement? And frankly at our speeds I don't feel we need GPSS. It's nice but unnecessary!----Poo poo GPSS it's unnecessary, why? cause I don't have one. Aspen boxes SUCK! You never answered my question though. I'm not taking it to a ridiculous extreme! Please answer my question. I really want to know why you consider my upgrade as unnecessary. Maybe I'm mising something!I feel it is an UPgrade. Unlike an Aspen or even a G500 in which case I would agree with you. THEY are unnecessary! The Aspen would be a true DOWNgrade. And it's only my opinion ! ----THE ASPEN WOULD BE A TRUE DOWNGRADE....poop on you mooniac, and it's only my opinion! OK, this was seriously a lot of fun, lucky for you I have thunderstorms all around me and I was able to stay in my trailer this morning. I know , I know, it's all taken out of context and my paraphrasing was WAY OFF... Let's see your best Jay Carney SPIN move...

I underestimated you guys! With the exception of Cris, you guys are clearly only interested in an argument and not in an intelligent discussion. Let's get something clear and out of the way: I accept a discussion. I do not accept an argument. Really Alex. You really feel an iPad is the same as a 750 ? You are going to tell me that an iPad has a similar user interface as the 750 ?! The 750, a certified IFR WAAS GPS Nav Comm specifically designed for aviation whose logic has evolved for 15 years now, is comparable to an iPad ? Is there something in that artificially flavored apple Kool aid Alex ? Maybe the heat is getting to you ! The iPad is an excellent EFB. A reader for charts, plates, POH as Cris mentioned, maybe even checklists, etc etc. As such it reduces weight, is easy to use and can slide in a pocket behind the seat easily. You have an argument about that !!

Due to its size and design the iPad is too cumbersome in the cockpit. There are a lot of concerns and rightly so, on how and where to mount it. Where do you put this thing? It takes up a lot of space! In addition complicating positioning you have angle it a certain way to minimize glare. Functionally, the iPad is only an average navigator. Think about it. Should we really be playing with an iPad while flying ?! No software that I've seen, no Wing X, no Foreflight or anyone else, have any worthwhile navigational detail anyway. Synthetic vision or not! I hope I'm wrong and God forbid this never happens but someone somewhere is going to get bitten by this synthetic vision stuff on an iPad! And its GPS is marginally dependable. As for weather it can't compete with near real time as XM, even on a handheld. The only real justification I can see for lugging an iPad around in the cockpit is as an inexpensive pdf plate reader and not as a GPS. But of course my iPhone with Goodreader and pdf plates is my free backup plate reader. For a handheld GPS an Aera is an excellent choice. Of course I have plates on my 750 so i don't really use my iPhone either. But they are there.
