  1. http://www.buy-ei.com/Pages/UBG/UBG-16_Overview.html You can get different sensors to provide different information so you can set it up for many types of FWF's. I have volts, amps, 4 egt, 4 cht, carb temp, and oil temp. I bought the basic instrument first and added a fw probes once the checking account rebounded, hen bought a couple more. I was amazed at how little information the old OEM gauges provide.
  2. Maybe going to Stockmar Flying S west of Atlanta. They are having a shindig there sunday. Harleys, old cars, live music, food and stuff. http://k20ga.com/
  3. WOW, I thought this was site was for the promtion of the sport of flying and specifically about MOONEY aircraft. Guess Communist/Liberal propaganda always finds a way to get in no matter where you seek refuge.
  4. Social Security, Fair, Rich, "Can afford".......Where in the constitution does it say or has it EVER said anything about the feeral government having the right or power to TAKE earnings, harvest, or any personal property for the purpose of giving to someone less fortunate. This country was founded on the idea that we as a people would be free from an opressive government and be free to worship and persue life without the burden of a powerful government. America has been transformed into just what the founders were trying to protect the people from. We are close to a tipping point. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdNYgRdWtNQ&feature=related
  5. I saw a show called " I Shouldnt Be Alive" where a pilot (happened to be flying a Mooney) was enroute from southwest USA to somewhere on the coast of Mexico. He was flying over the Gulf of California and ran into a storm then lost an engine, he then had to ditch in the sea near dusk. After watching this recount I thought "what should I do to prepare"for something like this? Here are my thoughts: Floatation for each soul, 406 ELT. By the way did anyone else see the episode? It supposedly happened in the late 1990's.
  6. I doubt parting out ANYTHING is gonna be less time consuming than selling as a completed vehicle/plane but you may get more out of it by parting out. Thats why junkyards are so lucrative.
  7. I have done that very thing before, when in a pinch, but I went through the outboad side of the gear tube. The reason is you cant get the wheel off with a rod in the main gear hole because the jack is in the way, and the longer the rod you use to gain clearance to remove the wheel the more folding pressure you will put on the gear. For this reason I removed the gear door and put the steel rod through and jacked from the outboard side as close as possible to the gear tube. (more trouble than it is worth) I now have the little jack points its much safer and when you arent using them for jacking the Mooney, they make great little tops!
  8. I just started my IFR training about 3 weeks ago, I have had private for over 10 yrs and my old CFI didnt seem too interested in going any further w/me. Then I met a new instructor, he is a retired "Naval Aviator" and he trains the way he was trained and I cant believe the difference. Just goes to show some people are "meant" to be teachers, a degree or certification does not a teacher make. I can hold a paint brush but it doesnt make me an artist. Get a GOOD CFII !
  9. I was told by a fellow that is near 70 yr old and has LOTS of Mooney experience, the outer doors should come off if you plan on doing it in the grass. He said he wouldnt do it regularly with what he called "a big bore mooney", the reason he gave was the extra shock loads a rough field would put on the cage with a long heavy FWF hangin out there. I would guess if it was smooth enough it wouldnt be an issue but if i had a late model mooney I wouldnt do it without walking up and down the strip first. I would give it a try with my old C model, guess its really a personal choice as to how much you are willing to chance.
  10. My old bird would let water in if it sat out in lots of rain, but after I bought new "O" rings that went away. That being said after the water showed up I became paranoid about it. Although my plane now lives indoors in a heated/airconditioned hangar and rarely sets outside, when it does I have a routine which maybe silly to some but here is what I do. I carry a roll of clear packing tape and tape over the fuel caps. I tape over the crack around the door and also over the vent window too. I cant stand the thought of water getting in the cabin and rusting my tubing. I also bought a small dehumidifier that I leave running in the back floor once I get home. I was amazed at how much moisture is in the air. I also built an engine de humidifier. These can be bought but I made my own. It uses dessicant that can be baked back out when they turn pink.
  11. I have about 30 minutes in an E and close 150hr in a C, so I dont really remember enough about the E but I have a hard time thinking the extra 20 ponies doesnt give you something. Maybe a little better climb?
  12. I always keep one of those 4-way screw drivers handy incase there are any loose fasteners, Homedepot has orange ones that are popular in my town. GO VOLS! By the way STOCKMAR-SMALL Airport, I had to make a trip to Villa Rica Ga. last friday and stopped at 20GA where I was very suprised with this little airport. Peggy is very nice and there is a nice pilot lounge. I sure wish there was an airport like that one near my town, and for anyone that is interested, OCTOBER 4TH there is a party at Stockmar, there will be LIVE MUSIC, LOTS OF HARLEYS, FOOD, PRIZES and AIRPLANE RIDES. I hope to be there.
  13. I was also told I would have a slightly longer ground roll but get about 4kt increase in cruise anyone have info on than? (with 2 blade scimitar)
  14. I have gotten three quotes in the last 2 weeks: 7900$ 7800$ 7700$ for the two blade scimitar. 7800$ was at Southcoast propellers in Bessmer Al
  15. I have heard lots of talk, yes the case has to be opened, no it doesnt ,yada yada yada. As for me, my A_ _ is worth more than a few grand. I'll have the cases split AND get a brand new prop. I'd rather know it is right. Cutting corners with critical rotating mass components is a bit different than a non approved light bulb or a set of automotive seat covers. If that prop slings a blade because of a bad hub or a harmonic vib in the crank the whole engine is gonna depart the aircraft faster than you can get your hand on the throttle. What would that do to the W&B? No I think I will be the chicken and spend a little and be sure. (Actually I would probably go with an IO-360 instead of the O-360) I think. Watch this and maybe you'll have a change of heart. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=433bkE3Mlw8&feature=related
  16. If the media needs stories why dont they cover blow-outs on motor vehicles there are plenty of those to cover. I guess the "Selfish Rich" need to be forced to sell their planes and give the funds to the Govt so they can help put Little Johnny Doe through college.
  17. There are only two reasons I would want to trade up; my in-laws live 185nm north of KANJ and the 30 hour drive every year really gets to be a chore, so I have always told myself I was going to make it a 6 hour flight instead of the drive (need IFR rating)and a turbo would get me over a lot of the Great Lakes weather. The other reason is I have almost 50gr in my C and thats probably more or even all I'll ever hope to get out of it. On the other side of the argument, it is paid for, it's cheap, I already have the 406 MHZ elt, S-Tec60-2, less than 300hr TSOH, long range tanks and UGB-16 (carb temp probe). So it isnt a bad little Mooney, I have never seen better MPG out of an airplane. Guess I should never have taken that one ride.
  18. I'm working on my IFR and my instructor says a C model (engine w/carb) is no good for IFR, he says its an ice maker. I am facing a prop replacement due to the old hub AD issue. The shop says mine is old and they dont recomend rebuilding because I'd have to buy a hub, and all I have are a couple of good blades at best. I have ok radios, a nice A/P and lots of Mods on a C model. She flies nice, is cheap on fuel, and looks good on the ramp, but she is still a 46 year old airplane, just how much money do ya keep puttin in it? I found a bird forsale but its turbocharged, my instructor says there is a learning curve, and I would rather keep my old "C" that to have to rely on him or anyone else to set left seat when I want to go somewhere, " There is a big learning curve" he says. And there is the fuel issue, I dont even think twice about going out and taking an hour ride, but a big Cont is for sure going to cost way more in fuel. So keep the Carb get my IFR then upgrade? or upgrade now and try to get IFR in a much different bird? Just how much different is a Rocket?
  19. Seriously the most important thing you should do is to define your need and go from there. All Mooney's are not created equal but some are better suited for a particular mission. Define your mission then you can narrow your search.
  20. Reminds me of being single and cant find a date, then ya get marrried and.......well we all know how that goes.
  21. I was reading this ad in Controller, http://www.controller.com/listingsdetail/aircraft-for-sale/MOONEY-M20C/1963-MOONEY-M20C/1204763.htm Is there or is there not a certified, fuel injected parallel valve 360? The ad says IO360B1B thought this was a angle-valve engine. I sure would like to get rid of the hot oil sump induction system and the carb I am stuck with.
  22. I dont know how anything gets invented anymore with so much regulation. If the pressure on GA keeps going I am seriously thinking about relocating, enviromentalists are ruining our country and this redistribution crap is not for me.
  23. I guess lots of people go window shopping with only a dream in their pockets, take the dealer/broker through all the motions, right up till the very end never having financing arranged. It would seem pretty silly to even look till you had $$ in hand, it's the way our government operates, spend now and worry about how to pay for it later. Bad thing is I dont think they do much worrying till election time.
  24. I have yet to see any other certified A/C give more speed for the dollar. I fly an old C model, manual gear, hyd/manual flaps, carb engine, cruise 145-150 kts on about 8.5 an hr up high and anual inspections cost about a grand sometimes a bit less. I get about the same fuel economy as an SUV, ya wont do that in a BO. In short? The 201 is probably the best value, just be SURE to get a Mooney expert for pre buy.
