Hurricane Evacuation - Hangar Available in MD
Seth replied to Seth's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I have subleased my hangar staring about two weeks from now until my repairs are completed, however it is indeed available this weekend/ next week. Florida is a 4-5 hour flight. Come on up to DC and enjoy the attractions here (opened Pandora’s box, I know). Smithsonian, monuments, historical locations, etc. Get away from the approaching storm. -Seth -
I’m leaning toward black. Anyone think I should do silver/metallic or grey instead? The black will flow with the black cherry paint scheme. I’ll probably just go with the white cowl color for the spinner, but again, it considering some sort of swirl on the spinner - why not. Dose anyone know of any Mooney’s with a swirl on the spinner? If so, so I do a black swirl on the white spinner? Maybe a burgundy swirl? I do understand when spinning it won’t look perfectly white. I can always paint/repaint the spinner. But the blades I’m thinking as noted Black with white tips. -Seth

Hurricane Evacuation - Hangar Available in MD

Many insurance companies will actually pay to have you move your airplane out of the way. -
My hangar is currently available for anyone that needs to move their airplane out of the path of the Hurricane. I'm based at KGAI in Maryland just outside DC. PM me if you want to use it. -Seth

Like Erik’s above! Erik’s is the silver/metallic color. -Seth

I would have no boots on mine, just the thicker Nickel Leading edge. -Seth

I was told the black, grey, and metallic/silver were the three most durable paint colors. The ovation with the four blade in white has some flaking. -Seth

I was thinking Aerostar or Cheynne II. But that’s a big step up from my Mooney!

Thanks! Go ahead schedule it and get it done. I was amazed at the lower cost with a study buddy who did the rating at the same time. Sitting in the back seat was like getting extra training at zero dollar cost. Also, having a study buddy over the weekend to go over procedures, knowledge, systems, concepts, it helped. -Seth

Tim - two of the three letters correct! He also had a Bonanza and 172. Be now has the Twin Commanche

I’m leaning very heavy toward the MT 4 blade prop for all reasons noted in my last thread. The paint peeling has partially been addressed by using harder paint formulas the last two years: they have six colors and suggest not going custom: White, Black, Grey, Yellow, Red, and maybe silver/metallic. The stock Missile blade is grey with white stripes at the tips and the spinner is polished aluminum. It was suggested by MT not to go with a chromed spinner due to former experience. The polished aluminum spinners are only available on turboprops. So, they suggest painting the spinner to match the cowl. The paint on the spinner doesn’t have the issues of the prop. My paint color is White, lighter burgundy, dark burgundy, and cherry blank with a gold stripe MT suggestion at Oshkosh: black blade, white tips, white spinner. What do you all suggest? The spinner can always be painted so I could have some fun here. White and black in quarters - like WWII fighters? Swirl like WWII fighters and jet engines? Here are some pics of my plane. Grey or Silver prop like Erik’s? Suggestions please!

Very helpful topic. On the three blade the shortest length of the blade with the nickel leading edge is 77 inches.

Just saw this thread. A few weeks ago I used Elon Aviation at BUY (North Carolina) for about $3k in a Baron. Excellent experience. I also we considering a place in Grotten CT. -Seth

Previous twin experience: I had .6 ME logged in a Seminole from 2010 or 2011. I logged 5.2 of ME over the weekend including the 1.3 checkride. So I left with 5.8 total logged ME time. I’ve since picked up another 1.4 ME as a safety pilot for a buddy of mine with a Twin Comanche (former Mooney M20E owner). Flights were: 1.5 and 1.4 on Saturday 1.0 stage check Sunday 1.3 Check ride on Monday. My friend Ben flew one flight Saturday between my flights and then two on Sunday around my flight. I took the checkride first and he took it second. Again, on Saturday and Sunday we each rode in the backseat during each other’s training flights which helped us tremendously (my opinion). I had a handful of non-loggable right seat time in a King Air, Citation, Twin Comanche, and Cessna 414 over the last 10 years. They had certain study material for us to learn prior to arriving and we (Ben and I) both agreed we were not prepared at all for the weekend. We didn’t get nearly any studying don’t prior to arrival between work, life, etc. having a study buddy helped on a Saturday and Sunday. We shared a room at a local hotel. We are both pretty current pilots and proficient with flying IFR which helps, but the Baron was really a sweet flying plane which made everything not as difficult as we thought it would be. We worked hard but didn’t feel beat up. We both learned a ton. I fully recommend Elon Aviation. The DPE owns the flight school and then Baron itself. You won’t meet him until your checkride morning. He is fair but he’ll fail you if you mess up. He’s very good. His instructors are good. I recommend it. -Seth

Sporadic Hiatus - Need to be on MooneySpace more!
Seth replied to Seth's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Haha! We hope it’s a one time thing with all the other things he’s dealing with. -Seth -
Sorry you dealt with the flat!!! Had that happen to me on a Part 135 leg in a Cirrus. Felt odd on landing, went flat once parked. Yes - a tube could make a lot of difference at a large field that does not cater to the piston crowd. I’ll make my decision very soon. I’ll likely start another thread with color suggestions and some pics even though my wife and kids will help make the selection. -Seth

Thank you. This helps! -Seth

“What GA plane is most like WWII fighter?” Look what popped up!
Seth replied to BigD's topic in General Mooney Talk
The original mold for the leading edge of the Mooney is the same press used we think from the actual P-51 as the mold at the factory had two holes (for guns). It was purchased from North American thus it's from the P-51B or P-51C wing. DNA of the Mooney literally is from North American - now that would be a marketing piece. -Seth -
FANTASTIC!!!!! LOVE IT!! CONGRATS!!

It's not a flat rate but it's estimated. mine was just a hair under $4000 estimate and it ended up being just under $3k. I think a lot of that was attributed to the split 50/50 of ground cost with my buddy who went with me (and he's an amatur body builder!!!) as well as us sitting in the back seat during each other's flights. It was three flights then checkride. $360 per hour for the twin. Whatever it was for instrcution, and $500 for the checkride. Total for me was just a hair under $3k but I need to add it up exactly. Simply haven't had time. Put down about $2k to reserve the weekend and then paid the rest once I spent $2k hourly as we went. Usually it's not three but four flights or more prior to the checkride. Again, we each learned a ton watching the other pilot while sitting in the back seat. Did I mention it was a SWEET flying Baron - I was amazed - not a ratty old thing but a very well maintained very smooht running machine. -Seth
